A bill to include a range of measures to improve safety in state care was to have its first reading in Parliament on Tuesday. The inquiry detailed a litany of abuses in state and faith-based care, including rape, sterilization and the use of electric shocks, which peaked in the 1970s. It also called for new legislation, including mandatory reporting of suspected abuse, including admissions made during religious confession.

WASHINGTON — The Department of Justice on Friday charged an Iranian man in a murder-for-hire plot to assassinate then-candidate Donald Trump and two others in a plot to kill an American journalist critical of Tehran. The three who were charged are Farhad Shakeri of Iran; Carlisle Rivera of Brooklyn, New York; and Jonathan Loadholt, of Staten Island, New York. Around Oct. 7, the Iranian official tasked Shakeri with providing a plan within seven days to kill Trump, he told law enforcement in recorded interviews, the complaint says. A white supremacist is accused of trying to destroy an electricity substation in Tennessee in an attempt to bring down the regional power network and disrupt American society, authorities said Monday. The theory was popularized by manifestos left by perpetrators in a number of high-profile neo-Nazi and white supremacist terrorist incidents, including the killing of 51 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2019. Philippi drove to an electricity substation, along with undercover FBI agents, to carry out reconnaissance, the bureau said. While driving, he ordered C-4 explosives from the undercover agents, and at a later date he bought black powder intended to be used in pipe bombs. The U.S. dollar was little changed against other global currencies on Tuesday evening as voting began to wind down in the presidential election. The foreign exchange market could be one of the first areas of the financial system to react as election results roll in. Traders generally expect that a strong night for former President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress could push the greenback higher. The dollar has generally strengthened in the runup to Election Day. The ICE U.S. Dollar Index rose more than 3% in October, though it has dipped in recent days.

A Montana man found slain in his tent earlier this month welcomed his alleged killer, a stranger, to his campsite and offered him a beer, the Gallatin County sheriff said Thursday. Abbey in a confession to detectives “stated, Dustin welcomed him to the campsite and offered him a beer,” Springer said. “The motives of this attack are still unknown.”DNA from a beer can found in the tent was matched by the state crime lab to Abbey, Springer said. He set up the camp on Oct. 10, a Thursday, and he planned to pick his girlfriend up from work the next night, Springer said. The girlfriend and a friend drove to the campsite on Oct. 12, a Saturday, and found Kjersem dead inside the tent, Springer said.
