BENGALURU, Nov 13 (Reuters) - New Zealand pace bowler Lockie Ferguson said on Monday they must accurately assess Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium pitch ahead of their World Cup semi-final against hosts India and look to tighten up their bowling at the traditionally high-scoring venue. "A lot of Indian grounds have been high scoring," Ferguson told reporters in Mumbai before Wednesday's clash. The pitch will be different... it's hard to read two days out. Ferguson said the statistics favoured batting first at the venue, with New Zealand looking to knock India out of the World Cup semi-finals for a second straight edition. "At the same time, it's not up to me and we have to play the game on the day," Ferguson added.

Nov 11 (Reuters) - Arsenal beat struggling Burnley 3-1 to move level on points with leaders Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table on Saturday after Tottenham Hotspur slipped to a last-gasp loss at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Leandro Trossard, William Saliba and Oleksandr Zinchenko scored in Arsenal's victory which lifted them above Spurs to second in the table, level on 29 points with Manchester City, who have a game in hand. Arsenal's afternoon was slightly soured by substitute Fabio Vieira being shown a straight red card but manager Mikel Arteta, who blasted officials after the loss to Newcastle United a week earlier, gave the referees high marks. A goal in the 59th minute from defender Victor Lindelof earned United a 1-0 win over Luton and secure a second successive league victory. Idrissa Gueye scored four minutes from time to earn Everton a breathless win at Selhurst Park.

Russell's Brazil retirement no problem for last two races

Nov 8 (Reuters) - George Russell's engine-related retirement from last Sunday's Sao Paulo Grand Prix will have no knock-on effects for the last two races of the Formula One season, Mercedes said in a team debrief on Wednesday. The Briton was retired at Interlagos as a precaution after rising temperatures in the power unit risked failure and wider damage to the car. Mercedes head of trackside performance Riccardo Musconi said Russell was always scheduled to have a different power unit for Las Vegas and the Abu Dhabi season-ender. "He will be on a different power unit for the final two races so there is no issue from that point of view." Musconi said Hamilton's disqualification from second place in last month's U.S. Grand Prix in Austin for excessive wear of the under-car plank might have contributed to the lack of pace, without being the determining factor.

Oct 31 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia was the only football association to present a bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup before the deadline closed, soccer's global governing body said on Tuesday. FIFA had invited bids from Asia and Oceania for the tournament by Oct. 31, and Saudi Arabia announced it would bid only minutes after the announcement on Oct 4. Australia said on Tuesday it would not be presenting a bid to host the tournament, leaving Saudi Arabia as the only candidate. FIFA also confirmed that the sole confirmation of interest in hosting the 2030 World Cup came from Morocco, Portugal and Spain with Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay hosting celebratory games. On Oct. 4 FIFA announced that the combined bid of Morocco Spain and Portugal would host the 2030 World Cup subject to the completion of a successful bidding process.

LONDON, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Australia would have found it difficult to compete with Saudi Arabia's bid to host the 2034 men's World Cup, Football Australia chief executive James Johnson said on Tuesday after his country opted not to enter the race to stage the tournament. Johnson said Australia, who recently co-hosted the Women's World Cup with New Zealand, would instead focus on bids for the 2026 Women's Asian Cup and the 2029 Club World Cup. The president of the Asian Football Confederation, the sport's continental governing body to which Australia belongs, said "the entire Asian football family" would stand united in support of the Saudi bid. The 2026 men's World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada. No goal of month winner for Basel after horror-show October

Oct 31 (Reuters) - Swiss club Basel's season has gone from bad to worse since it began in July, and with no goals scored in October, they were unable to announce a goal of the month winner on Tuesday. With four defeats from four games in October, Basel conceded 10 goals and scored none, which led to the club posting a photo of a goal net and a caption which read "No goals in October = No goal of the month" on their social media accounts. The club are currently bottom of the Swiss league, with just one win in 11 games, and were also knocked out of the Europa Conference League in the second qualifying round by FC Tobol of Kazakhstan.
