Timothy Richards, chief executive of Vue International, Europe’s largest privately owned movie theater operator, said in a statement Sunday that it had seen its biggest weekend in four years for ticket sales. AMC (AMC), the world’s largest movie theater chain, said last week that 60,000 people had bought tickets see both films on the same day. Cineworld, the world’s second-biggest movie theater chain and owner of Regal Cinemas, filed for bankruptcy in September after posting a total $3.3 billion loss over 2020 and 2021. So far, Cineworld has shuttered 51 of its Regal movie theaters in the US.

New York CNN —Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” raked in a stunning $155 million domestically over the weekend, giving the film the largest opening weekend of 2023, Comscore said. The combined release of “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” dubbed “Barbenheimer,” has become a pop culture sensation – and one that might revive a struggling movie industry. Coming in behind “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer” opened at $80.5 million domestically over the weekend, according to Comscore. Its closest comparison is “Wonder Woman” in 2017, directed by Patty Jenkins, which raked in about $38 million domestically on opening day, according to Box Office Mojo. That could bring a much needed rebound to the movie industry.

After the Times story broke, some 100 women came forward with accusations of sexual misconduct by Weinstein. The reporting fueled the #MeToo movement, with women around the world calling out sexual harassment. Weinstein, who has denied having non-consensual sex with anyone, was sentenced in New York in March 2020 to 23 years in prison for rape and sexual assault involving two women. Weinstein is currently on trial in California on additional charges of sexual misconduct.
