Tema ETFs' Yuri Khodjamirian is keeping a close watch on chip designer Qualcomm Inc . As AI shifts from data centers — an Nvidia "stronghold" — to the " edge ," investors should "start looking at companies like Qualcomm," Khodjamirian said. And "edge AI" is more than about chips — "it's really everything, the silicon content of our mobile phones and PCs, has to go up, because you need better memory; you need better connectivity between the different semiconductors. Qualcomm's shares are currently trading at around 15.3 times forward earnings, while Nvidia has a multiple of around 38, according to FactSet data. 'Emerging Edge AI play' Analysts at KeyBanc Capital Markets are bullish on Qualcomm and have a target price of $225 on the stock, or 55.8% upside.

Nvidia stock has a lot more room to run, according to Dan Niles. The Niles Investment founder compared Nvidia to Cisco prior to the peak of the dot-com bubble. Nvidia shares could double in the next couple of years, he predicted. Nvidia shares, by comparison, have risen around 1,500% over the last six years. The chipmaker has hit a rough stretch in recent weeks, with shares dropping 27% from their peak earlier this summer.

I probably do not have to tell you that Nvidia has really blown up over the past few years. "If people were going to be going crazy about a stock, wouldn't it be this one?" That continues a trend from 2023, when generative AI companies raised $25.9 billion for the full year, up more than 200% from 2022. The average round for AI companies is 140% bigger this year compared with last, the data shows, while for non-AI companies the increase is only 10%. Most venture investors are bullish on the potential for generative AI to eventually create big returns at the application layer. John-David Lovelock, an analyst at Gartner and a 35-year veteran of the IT industry, sees a big opportunity for generative AI in the enterprise. Yet, in 2024, only 1% of the trillion dollars spent on software will be from businesses spending on generative AI products, he said.

New York CNN —Wall Street is eyeing what could be the most consequential economic data report in months due out Friday. At the same time, Wall Street is looking for signs that the job market is cooling steadily, rather than plummeting into conditions for a recession. That uncertainty has been palpable in recent days as Wall Street parsed several economic reports before Friday’s main event. Big Tech shares gained Thursday, but suffered steep losses earlier this week. Tesla, the only Magnificent Seven tech stock up for the week, has jumped 7.5%.

Nvidia is suddenly in trouble

CNN —Nvidia, the AI chipmaking titan that was briefly the world’s most valuable company, has suddenly found itself in an unfamiliar position: a major rut. Nvidia (NVDA) had the worst day in the history of the stock market Tuesday, as measured by loss in total market value. To put that shocking decline into context, only 27 companies on the planet are worth as much as Nvidia lost in value Tuesday. That’s why bulls like Wedbush’s Dan Ives believe Nvidia’s stock decline presents a buying opportunity. – CNN’s Ramishah Maruf contributed to this reportCorrection: Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly described TSMC's relationship with Nvidia.

Dow falls by more than 600 points as September turns ugly
  + stars: | 2024-09-03 | by ( Lucy Bayly | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
New York CNN —Wall Street kicked off the month of September with a bust, after a disappointing economic report dragged down the Dow by 626 points, or 1.5%, Tuesday afternoon. Traders were already jittery ahead of a big month of economic news, from Friday’s key jobs report to next week’s inflation readings and then the long-awaited rate cut from the Fed mid-month. Investors were reacting to a weaker-than-expected jobs report that underscored fears that the Fed had mishandled inflation and pushed the economy right into a recession. Friday’s jobs report is arguably the most important piece of economic data that central bank officials will have to parse before their monetary policy meeting on September 17-18. International benchmark Brent fell to $73.70 a barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate closed at just above $70 a barrel.

While expectations are high and caution is certainly warranted, we don't think it's quite that simple. While the Oscillator and Williams' work do point to possible selling pressure ahead, we don't want to get too bearish. However, we don't think the risks are so elevated as to warrant more than a small cash raise. We still view Nvidia as an "own it, don't trade it" stock, but we also don't keep our heads in the sand. NVDA YTD mountain Nvidia Wall Street is bullish heading into Nvidia's earnings results next week, figuring any hiccups to its next generation AI chips does little to dim the earnings potential of a company that essentially has a monopoly on the market. Economists polled by FactSet anticipate PCE to show increases of 0.2% month on month and 2.6% from the year-earlier period. Wall Street traders think next week's earnings report from Nvidia is likely to give the chip stock another boost, according to one interpretation of options market pricing. A Piper Sandler research note on Thursday from Benson Durham and Melissa Turner said short-term options on Nvidia look expensive, but that high cost is tilted toward options that serve as bets the stock will rise. So, expensive NVDA options in general don't connote very much investor angst heading into the release," the Piper Sandler report said. The market optimism about Nvidia extends beyond the immediate period after the earnings report, according to Piper Sandler. The Piper Sandler researchers did not take a fundamental position on Nvidia's earnings report.

Chinese technology giant Huawei is set to challenge Nvidia with a new artificial intelligence chip amid U.S. sanctions that had sought to curb the Chinese tech giant's technological progress, according to a Wall Street Journal report. U.S. regulators in 2022 had slapped restrictions on Nvidia to stop the firm from selling AI chips, including the H100, in China, citing national security concerns. Huawei has been at the center of U.S. sanctions aimed at securing U.S. networks and supply chains. Huawei was then placed on a U.S. trade blacklist in 2019, which banned U.S. firms from selling technology — including 5G chips — to the Chinese tech giant. In 2020, the U.S. tightened chip restrictions on Huawei, requiring foreign manufacturers using American chipmaking equipment to obtain a license to sell semiconductors to Huawei.
