Inside Meta's scramble to catch up on A.I.
  + stars: | 2023-04-25 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +8 min
For more than a year, Meta has been engaged in a massive project to whip its AI infrastructure into shape. He declined to comment on whether Meta abandoned its AI chip. Generative AI gobbles up reams of computing power, amplifying the urgency of Meta's capacity scramble, said five of the sources. By 2021, that two-pronged approach proved slower and less efficient than one built around GPUs, which were also more flexible in running different types of models than Meta's chip, the two people said. Executives also that spring set about reorganizing Meta's AI units, naming two new heads of engineering in the process, including Janardhan, the author of the September memo.

Synopsys spreads AI throughout its chip design tools
  + stars: | 2023-03-29 | by ( Stephen Nellis | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Synopsys first released an AI tool for one part of the chip design process three years ago, and with customers like Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) and ST Microelectronics (STM.DE) using the system. The tools Synopsys released Wednesday at its annual user conference in Santa Clara, California, spread much further across the chip design process. Synopsys is in a race with Cadence Design Systems (CDNS.O), its largest competitor, to add AI to chip design software. While some of the Synopsys tools released Wednesday are catching up to Cadence, Karl Freund, principal analyst with Cambrian AI research, said Synopsys is ahead, with more than 100 chips by customers using its AI tools coming to market. "I think they'll probably be at 1,000 (completed chip designs) by the end of the year."

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationMarch 27 (Reuters) - Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O), the world's leading designer of computer chips used in creating artificial intelligence, on Monday showed new research that explains how AI can be used to improve chip design. Chip design engineers use complex design software from firms like Synopsys Inc (SNPS.O) and Cadence Design Systems Inc (CDNS.O) to help them optimize the placement of those transistors. On Monday, Nvidia released a paper showing that it could use a combination of artificial intelligence techniques to find better ways to place big groups of transistors. The Nvidia research took an existing effort developed by University of Texas researchers using what is called reinforcement learning and added a second layer of artificial intelligence on top of it to get even better results.
Softbank-owned Arm seeks to raise prices ahead of U.S. IPO - FT
  + stars: | 2023-03-23 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
March 23 (Reuters) - Arm Ltd, owned by Japan's SoftBank Group Corp (9984.T), is seeking to raise prices for its chip designs, as it aims to boost revenue ahead of an initial public offering in New York, the Financial Times reported on Thursday. The British chip designer recently notified several of its customers of a "significant shift" to its business model, the newspaper said, citing several industry executives and former employees. Arm intends to alter its royalty program, ceasing to charge chipmakers royalties for using its designs based on a chip's value, and instead charge device makers based on the value of the device, the report said. As a result of this change, Arm anticipates generating multiple times more revenue for each design it sells, since the value of an average smartphone far exceeds that of a single chip. The FDA rejected Neuralink's request for approval to begin testing its brain chips in humans, Reuters reported. The agency cited dozens of issues with the device, including concerns it could overheat or move in the brain. Elon Musk has been promising the company will soon begin testing on humans since 2019. Reuters said the FDA identified "dozens of issues" Neuralink must remedy before it could begin human testing in the US. The firm plans to implant chips into human brains, which would allow people to perform tasks using only their mind.
The company said the 5G chip was made at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co's (2330.TW) using its second generation 4-nanometer chip production technology, which refers to the transistor size. Phil Solis, smartphone chip analyst at IDC, said the new chip was key for MediaTek's strategy to move upstream. "This product will help MediaTek expand in the U.S. and European markets and help change consumer's perception about MediaTek," Solis told Reuters. "MediaTek is far behind Qualcomm in terms of revenue, and that is what MediaTek is attempting to change," said Solis. MediaTek said the new chip's power efficiency helped achieve longer battery life and create a better gaming experience on the smartphone.
And despite offering improved performance, the new Apple TV 4K will actually launch at a cheaper starting price than its predecessor. The new Apple TV 4K uses the A15 Bionic chipOne of the third-gen Apple TV 4K's most notable upgrades comes in the form of its processor. This is important for customers who plan to use the Apple TV 4K to play games on Apple Arcade. Apple TV 4K now comes with more storage spaceThe second-gen Apple TV 4K let buyers choose between storage options of 32GB or 64GB. You can also currently pick up the second-gen Apple TV 4K on sale for $110, which is $15 less than the new third-gen model.
