Barber is the recipient of a MacArthur “genius grant” and helps lead the Poor People’s Campaign, which seeks national solutions to ongoing poverty. He once said, “Racism may target Black people, but it damns a democracy, and it damns humanity.”CNN spoke with Barber about the country’s future in Trump’s impending second term. Hollywood was back this weekend to where it desperately hungers to be — at the center of global culture. Women flocked to the PG-rated “Wicked,” a lavish adaptation of Act One of the popular Broadway musical, while men supported “Gladiator II,” an R-rated sequel 24 years in the making. Together, the two big-budget movies were on pace to sell roughly $380 million in tickets worldwide, bringing the box office back to life after months of audience indifference. That sum would make “Wicked” the third-highest opener for the year, behind $211 million for “Deadpool & Wolverine” and $154 million for “Inside Out 2.” (Overseas, “Wicked” was expected to collect an additional $48 million.) Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” was on pace to collect about $60 million in North America, including previews, for a worldwide total since arriving in overseas release earlier this month of about $225 million.

(AP) – Fred Harris, a former US senator from Oklahoma, presidential hopeful and populist who championed Democratic Party reforms in the turbulent 1960s, died Saturday. “I think it’s worked wonderfully,” Harris recalled in 2004, when he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Boston. “It’s made the selection much more legitimate and democratic.”“The Democratic Party was not democratic, and many of the delegations were pretty much boss-controlled or -dominated. Harris ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1976, quitting after poor showings in early contests, including a fourth-place win in New Hampshire. AdvertisementThis post originally appeared in the Insider Today newsletter. TikTok videos espoused the benefits of #publicsector jobs, and Google searches for "how to get a government job" hit a five-year high. Several careers consultants told Business Insider they were already experiencing a rush of demand from workers ready to shift to the private sector. But ask any white-collar professional, and they'll tell you a horror story that would prove otherwise. Hiring has held up well for low-earning workers, but those making six figures or more are in the midst of a white-collar recession.

They're trying to figure out what to do. They're trying to figure out what to do. Thanks to muscle memory from the tariffs Trump imposed in 2018, he says, many businesses are speeding up their shipping schedules — racing to get as many goods as possible into the country before any new tariffs are implemented. So did dryers, even though they weren't subject to tariffs — companies figured customers would assume that two related products were subject to the same inflationary forces. Investors should be wary of the impacts several companies may bear from the cost-cutting goals of President-elect Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, according to TD Cowen. "The announcement of DOGE has led to concerns about future revenue and profitability of USG [United States government] contractors," analyst Roman Schweizer said in a Friday note to clients. "It is too early to estimate potential negative impacts to USG contractors given the limited results of prior USG reforms, but cuts are possible and there will be uncertainty for several months." In an effort to find companies that have the most at stake under potential DOGE actions, TD Cowen identified the publicly traded government contractors with the highest amount of dollars obligated in fiscal year 2023, both overall and by individual federal department. Pharmaceutical giants such as Merck , Humana and Pfizer could also be impacted by potential DOGE cuts, as the firm found they receive large sums of money primarily through contracts with the Department of Health & Human Services.

Doug Burgum, Trump's nominee for Secretary of the Interior and "energy czar," won praise from pro-housing advocates from both parties earlier this year when he made the case for denser, more walkable, mixed-use communities. Advertisement"He's been a champion of zoning reform and parking reform and transportation reform," Chuck Marohn, the founder of the urbanism nonprofit Strong Towns, told Business Insider. Doug Burgum — President-elect Donald Trump's pick to lead the US Department of Interior — reflects the growing bipartisanship around deregulating housing. At the same time, the housing shortage has begun to impact communities across the country rather than just large coastal metros. While Republicans use language about private property rights, free markets, and deregulation to make a case for YIMBY policies, Democrats talk about racial equity and environmental sustainability, Nolan Gray, research director for California YIMBY said.

Three years ago, Southwest Airlines started flying out of Bellingham, Wash., a growing city near the Canadian border, aiming to do what it had done in dozens of smaller airports — sell lots of tickets to people who have few other travel options. Officials and residents in Bellingham, which sits between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia, were thrilled as the airline added new nonstop service to cities on the West Coast at affordable prices. “The community embraced them, and we loved having them,” said Rob Fix, the executive director of the Port of Bellingham, which oversees the airport. But the expansion didn’t work as planned. This year, facing unexpected costs and challenges, Southwest left Bellingham and a handful of other cities it had started serving during an ambitious period of growth early in the recovery from the pandemic — markets that it said were underperforming.

The election victory by Donald Trump and his Republican Party was a rebuke of a Democratic Party that has positioned itself as protector of a despised status quo, rendering it unable to connect with an electorate desperate for change. Defeating Mr. Trump in the future will require liberals, progressives and others on the left to articulate a positive vision that can capture the imagination of a broad majority of Americans. But where can they find the inspiration for such a vision? The answer lies in the work of the towering 20th century political philosopher John Rawls. The philosophy of Rawls, who died in 2002, is grounded not in self-interest and competition, but in reciprocity and cooperation.
