Federal prosecutors have charged the founder of an education technology startup spun out of Harvard who was recognized on a Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2021 with fraud. CNN —President-elect Donald Trump announced Monday he has selected former congressman and recent Fox Business co-host Sean Duffy to serve as the next secretary of the Department of Transportation. He most recently was co-host of Fox Business’ “The Bottom Line,” after first joining Fox News as a contributor in 2020. Wednesday marked his last day appearing on Fox Business, and he interviewed for the role of transportation secretary later in the week, according to a source. In the role, Duffy would takeover the department from Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who was named to lead the department in February 2021. A Wall Street Journal report Tuesday evening said a bankruptcy filing is expected to happen within weeks, as talks with Frontier Airlines to possibly buy Spirit (SAVE) broke down recently. Because of those discussions, the company said, Spirit is unable able to complete its third-quarter financial report by the prescribed time. While Spirit management tried to move ahead with the Frontier deal, its shareholders rejected the offer and Spirit ultimately agreed to the JetBlue deal instead. It argued such a combination would hurt airline passengers because it would reduce the number of inexpensive airline tickets — putting upward pressure on airfares overall. In January 2024 a federal judge agreed with DOJ’s argument and blocked the JetBlue deal.

CNN —Investigators in Wisconsin used genetic genealogy to solve a 50-year-old cold case this week, charging an 84-year-old Minnesota man with killing a woman who was found dead in 1974, authorities said. “This is a huge victory for our agency,” Bygd said at a Friday news conference. It’s the first time the agency has used genetic genealogy to solve a case, the sheriff said. Forensic genetic genealogy can generate leads for unsolved cases by analyzing DNA on top of traditional genealogy research, according to the US Department of Justice.
