Chin-Hong said the variant is a so-called recombinant of two other strains — KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 — meaning that genetic information was exchanged between them to form a third strain, XEC, Chin-Hong said. Is the XEC variant more contagious? Chan School of Public Health, said there’s no evidence yet that the XEC variant is much more transmissible than what’s currently circulating. The variant is closely related to KP.2, the strain targeted by the updated vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna. Bright, however, cautioned that clinical data is ultimately needed to determine how well the updated vaccines work against the XEC variant.

For the study, released jointly by Chinese American civic engagement nonprofit Committee of 100 and NORC at the University of Chicago, researchers sampled 504 Chinese Americans in March. But the Biden-Harris administration published a memorandum in 2021 condemning the use of racist rhetoric toward Asian Americans. About two-thirds of respondents said they felt that the rhetoric used by U.S. media when reporting on the issue negatively affects how strangers treat them. Land restrictions, like in Florida, that limit Chinese citizens from buying property, could be affecting the Chinese community as well. “Regardless of the intention of these tough-on-China policies, there are unintended consequences on the treatment of Chinese Americans.”

Micron Technology shares surged roughly 14% in after-hours trading after the memory maker forecast higher-than-expected first-quarter revenue due to the thirst for its memory chips used in artificial intelligence computing. HBM is a space-saving, power-efficient type of dynamic random access memory chip, or DRAM, crucial for AI-focused graphics processing units, that aid in processing vast amounts of data. "Demand from data center customers continues to be strong and customer inventory levels are healthy," Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said on a conference call with analysts. The AI boom has also helped Micron cushion the hit from a memory chip inventory glut in PC and smartphone markets. Personal computers infused with AI technologies are expected to have more memory chips, helping firms such as Micron.

1 in 3 children worldwide is now nearsighted, study shows
  + stars: | 2024-09-25 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Nearsightedness, or myopia, refers to when closer objects are clear, but distant objects are blurry. Nearsightedness is expected to keep rising among children and adolescents. This could be due in part to the fact that East Asian children start formal education at the age of 2 or 3, earlier than kids in other regions, the researchers say. Progression of nearsightedness in children can be slowed by taking breaks and avoiding hour after hour on the phone or computer, he wrote. Limiting up-close reading time outside of school — screen time or otherwise — may help slow the progression of nearsightedness in children, he added.

That’s why Maricopa County has spent over $864,000 in federal funds and more than $3 million in county funds to bolster its election security and processes over the past four years. Officials readily shared their worries with CNN, citing death threats, harassment, baseless lawsuits, onerous public-records requests and various security threats spurred by false claims about voter fraud. Amid these challenges, budgets for election security have been squeezed in several ways. Thousands of election workers across the country have reported receiving harassing, offensive or hostile communications, including since the 2022 midterms, according to the Department of Justice’s Election Threats Task Force. As recently as Tuesday, Trump threatened to prosecute and imprison election officials if he wins in November, as he cast doubt on the integrity of the upcoming election.

Three decades is a “shamefully long” time for veterans to wait, the groups said in the report, especially considering the prevalence of toxins at military bases and deployment sites. “There isn’t a major conflict in the past 100 years that has been immune to this epidemic,” the report said. About 2.7 million service members who fought in the Vietnam War may have been exposed to the cancer-causing herbicide Agent Orange from 1962 to 1975, officials said. But the first veterans to be exposed had to wait nearly 30 years before Congress passed the Agent Orange Act of 1991, which established a link between the herbicide and certain cancers and diseases. Under the law, affected veterans no longer needed to show they were exposed to Agent Orange to get disability compensation.

The latest research looked at a part of the brain called the olfactory bulb, which processes information about smell. Connecting the olfactory bulb and the nasal cavity is the olfactory nerve. Some researchers worry the olfactory pathway may also be an entry point for microplastics getting into the brain, beyond the olfactory bulb. Mauad and her team took samples of olfactory bulb tissue from 15 cadavers of people who died between the ages of 33 and 100. The presence of microplastics in the olfactory bulb doesn’t automatically mean there are microplastics elsewhere in the brain, such as regions related to cognition.

How pregnancy changes the brain
  + stars: | 2024-09-16 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
CNN —Researchers have created one of the first comprehensive maps of how the brain changes throughout pregnancy, substantially improving upon understanding of an understudied field. What brain changes mean for parentsThe functional implications these brain changes may have for birthing parents have yet to be determined, said Dr. Elseline Hoekzema, head of the Pregnancy and the Brain Lab at Amsterdam University Medical Center, via email. However, some of Hoekzema’s previous work has indicated associations between pregnancy-related brain changes and the ways a birthing parent’s brain and body respond and bond to infants’ cues, Hoekzema added. These findings are also in line with animal studies showing brain changes that were critical for the onset and continuation of maternal care. “Of the 50,000 brain imaging articles published in the last 30 years, less than half of 1% focus on health factors unique to women, like pregnancy.

Some additional factors Brooks says are key to a happiness diet include:Still, it was the use of meal time for social gathering that stuck with Brooks. Shaw, a co-senior author of the new study, acknowledged a link between early puberty and excess weight in young girls. “I do think it plays a role, but in my practice, it’s not just those who are overweight or obese who are having early puberty,” she said. But children were most likely to be exposed to only one of them: musk ambrette, according to the report, published in Endocrinology. Musk ambrette is widely used in inexpensive or counterfeit fragrances and other scented personal care products, Shaw said. She was surprised that phthalates, which have been linked to early puberty, didn’t come up in the research.
