Johns Hopkins University-led (JHU-led) research said a blip on the seismometer that Loeb used to pinpoint the crash site may simply have been caused by the vibrations of a passing truck. AdvertisementPinpointing the crash siteIn 2019, Loeb and his team searched databases for unusual meteors that were moving rapidly. The meteor, dubbed by Loeb's team IM1, was first spotted by the Department of Defense's (DoD) sensors. Loeb's team recovered 805 spherules.

NASA's Juno mission found that Jupiter's icy moon Europa produces 1,000 tons of oxygen every 24 hours. That's enough oxygen to keep a million people alive for a day, NASA reported this week. Some of it may get stuck in the ice, some may escape to space, and some may travel downward into Europa's subsurface ocean. NASAWhat NASA's Juno mission has done is shed more light on the total amount of oxygen that Europa's surface generates. Measuring oxygen on EuropaTo measure how much oxygen Europa's surface generates, scientists used the Jovian Auroral Distributions Experiment (JADE) instrument on board Juno.

A single genetic tweak that occurred among our ancestors 25 million years ago means humans today are unable to grow a tail, according to a new study. Scientists knew that a gene called TBXT was involved in the snipping of the tail. Asep Supriatna/Getty ImagesWandering DNA snipped off our tailsThe solution, they found, was in a type of "jumping gene" called an Alu element. Scientists found two Alu elements around a part of the TBXT gene, called Exon 6. Scientists tested their findings by inserting Alu sequences in mice.

Scientists have managed to extract evidence from an ancient fossil of early life on Earth. Studying these samples can reveal clues about life on Earth over 3.4 billion years ago. Life on Earth more than 3 billion years agoScientists think that life on Earth began around 4.3 billion years ago, but tracking down evidence dating back to that time is a difficult task. Still, by drilling straight into ancient rock, scientists have found peculiar, carbon-rich layers in several cores taken from around the world. And what they've found is that Earth was already teaming with life more than three billion years ago.

Instead, in a story filled with twists and turns, I ended up documenting the rare phenomenon of a shark regenerating a dorsal fin. Silky sharks are commonly found in the open ocean and grow to be 10 feet long. In the many shark photos he sent, I noticed a silky shark with an oddly shaped dorsal fin. LONDON — Barclays on Tuesday reported a net profit of £1.27 billion ($1.56 billion) for the third quarter, slightly ahead of expectations as strong results in its consumer and credit card businesses compensated for weakening investment bank revenues. Venkatakrishnan said the bank "continued to manage credit well, remained disciplined on costs and maintained a strong capital position" against a "mixed market backdrop." Barclays' corporate and investment bank (CIB) saw income decrease by 6% to £3.1 billion, with the bank citing reduced client activity in global markets and investment banking fees. The bank did not announce any new returns of capital to shareholders after July's £750 million share buyback announcement. The cost-income ratio in the third quarter was 63%, but the bank has set a medium-term target of below 60%.
