Rome CNN —Rome’s baroque Trevi Fountain opened Saturday morning with selfie-takers lining a newly installed metal walkway, as workers start the painstaking process of carefully cleaning the 18th-century masterpiece. But a warning to those visiting the attraction because tossing a coin into the fountain, a long-standing tradition, is now banned. The $330,000 cleaning and restoration project will last until December, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri told CNN in an interview Saturday morning. He said that will also make the experience better for tourists, many of whom seem happy to pay the price. The mayor has promised that the Trevi Fountain will be ready in just five weeks this time.

“And then this oppressive atmosphere in the town and the control that the Church exerts over the whole of society. “Small Things Like These” may appear to be a small, quiet film, especially when compared to Murphy’s Oscar-winning blockbuster “Oppenheimer,” but the film’s hero is on an epic moral journey. Despite having the feel of a period movie, this Irish story has not yet been consigned to the past. This is the first film for Murphy’s production company, “Big Things” and is executive produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. “Small Things Like These” releases in theaters in the US on Friday and is already out in cinemas in the UK.

CNN —Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett stands apart. And that is why Barrett has become the best hope for what remains of the liberal wing, particularly after Trump’s election victory. As Trump returns to the White House, the Supreme Court may be even more positioned to check the balance of powers. Nonetheless, progressives have few options, and an uncertain horizon, and cannot help but imbue Barrett with hope. “As Justice Barrett said…,” is a common Kagan refrain, too.

Pope Francis seemed to inadvertently bless the New Orleans Saints — which couldn't come at a better time, as the NFL team just excommunicated their head coach. It comes as the New Orleans Saints fired head coach Dennis Allen on Monday after the team lost to the division rival Carolina Panthers on Sunday, making their seven straight defeat. “They just fired their head coach though, Pontif,” one X user wrote. MEXICO CITY — A local leader of the Mexican folk saint cult “La Santa Muerte” was gunned down at an altar to the skeletal figure late Friday, authorities said. Two other people were killed and eight injured in the attack in the city of Leon, in Guanajuato state, the authorities added. But that didn’t work for “La Madrina Chayo,” a woman considered a leader of the cult in the north-central state of Guanajuato. Like Mexico’s Day of the Dead holiday, the Santa Muerte is honored on Nov. 1 and 2. While the cult may sound ominous, the annual celebrations honoring the Santa Muerte are friendly affairs, with people warmly greeting fellow worshippers and offering them small gifts.

Election officials warn they’re outmatched and struggling to combat the wave of falsehoods coming from Musk and his platform. Manipulating early voting numbersIn 2020, Trump attacked early voting and mail-in voting, claiming they were used to cheat. Election officials have been inundated with threats of violence since the 2020 election. But Trump and his allies have been laying the groundwork to try to dispute the election should he lose. In Georgia, conservatives sought to allow county election officials to refuse to certify the election results, though the effort was blocked by a state judge.

Unlike younger generations, who until recently may have taken federal abortion protections for granted, older women recall the era of illegal backroom abortions that preceded Roe. A fight for the senior voteNot all older women are motivated by abortion. But in a race that is expected to be decided on the margins, boosting support among women and older voters could make a difference. There are some signs in early voting data that women seniors are highly motivated to vote, said Tom Bonier, a Democratic strategist and CEO of the data firm TargetSmart. Lindsay Roselle transformed her view on motherhood after an ayahuasca retreat in the Amazon. But new research suggests that one English woman convicted of witchcraft and condemned to be hanged may have escaped the noose. Alice Molland – who has long held the tragic record of being the last woman in England to be hanged as a “witch” – was sentenced to death in 1685. In June 1685, Avis Molland – by now widowed – emerges in court records as an informant about a potential revolt, at a time when the Duke of Monmouth was attempting a rebellion against the king. CNN —Parts of the Roman Catholic Church are still failing to ensure clerical sexual abuse is reported adequately, Pope Francis’ commission for child protection said Tuesday, raising concerns about a “lack of transparency” in the Vatican’s handling of cases. “At times, the commission found a troubling lack of reporting structures and victim/survivor accompaniment services,” the report said. “The commission found a persistent concern regarding the transparency in the Roman Curia’s (the church’s central administration) procedures and juridical processes. The commission notes that this will continue to foment distrust among the faithful, especially the victim/survivor community,” it added. Francis asked the commission two years ago to produce an annual report on child protection initiatives which he wanted to help bring “transparency and accountability” on abuse.
