Above the small city of Vinhedo, Brazil, on Friday, a passenger plane was falling from the sky. Residents began filming. Those videos show the horrifying moment when an 89-foot-long plane, carrying 61 people and slowly spinning in circles, plummeted to earth. A moment after the plane disappears from view near a gated community, an enormous black plume of smoke rises from the spot. One video then shows a house on fire, a swimming pool full of debris and a group of men peering over a scene of carnage in a yard: a shredded fuselage, twisted metal and, several yards in front of the cockpit, a body.

Markets around the world are getting some relief after the steep declines suffered Monday. Japan's Nikkei 225 surged more than 10% overnight — its biggest one-day gain since 2008 — clawing back some of its losses from the previous session. In the U.S., stock futures pointed to slight gains at the open. It might be an easier call if it was October, but we frankly struggle to think of many markets that have put in their corrective lows in early-August," Verrone wrote. The Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) , Wall Street's preferred fear gauge, remained elevated around 32, though it was down 16% in morning trade.

To be sure, the carnage on Wall Street and in equities markets around the world was real. But Monday’s panic was the Wall Street equivalent of a tantrum from a kid who just got told they can’t have ice cream for dinner. Thursday brought more negative news from the jobs market: unemployment insurance claims for the week ending July 27 were up by 14,000 from the previous week to 249,000. Stepping back from last week's weak data, chief investment officers and top strategists say the market is overreacting, and they're using this as a buying opportunity. Bitcoin dropped on Monday amid the global market meltdown. Crypto has not been spared the carnage as traders eye a growing risk of a US recession. The sell-off in crypto comes as risk assets plunge in a global market rout caused by worries over the state of the US economy. Some market observers have said that the historic market rout could prompt an emergency rate cut from the central bank in the next week. Japan's Nikkei 225 index dropped 12% early Monday in its worst single-day decline since 1987, and markets in South Korea and Europe also plunged.

Linde Why we own it: The industrial gas supplier and engineering firm has a stellar track record of consistent earnings growth. We're not the only investors who have come to covet the company's ability to deliver steady earnings growth regardless of the economic conditions. But if there is a worsening of economic conditions, Lamba said Linde will take action quickly to protect profits. "That was just a very solid quarter," Jim Cramer said Friday. Guidance For the third quarter, Linde expects adjusted EPS in the range of $3.82 to $3.92, implying 5% to 8% growth compared with the year-ago period.

The stock market is gearing up for its rate cut era

Data Thursday showed the economy expanded at a robust 2.8% annualized rate during the second quarter, blowing past economists’ expectations. While the Fed has penciled in just one rate cut for this year, traders are betting on up to three, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. While the market was broadly higher on Friday, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq on Wednesday logged their worst daily performances since 2022. Shares of smaller companies tend to perform poorly when rates are high, since they have more floating rate debt than their larger counterparts. Investors are also picking at other areas of the market poised to gain when rates come down.

For those watching from outside, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh presents a compelling story. Over her 15 of 20 total years at the helm, Ms. Hasina has deeply entrenched her authority and divided this nation of 170 million people. Those who kissed the ring were rewarded with patronage, power and impunity. The sustained protests that have convulsed Bangladesh this month are a backlash against Ms. Hasina’s formula for power: absolute, disconnected and entitled. Her bloody crackdown, which has left at least 150 people dead, has grown into the biggest challenge ever to her dominance, just months after she steamrolled to a fourth consecutive term as prime minister.

The past week's tumultuous stock market action harkened back to the dark days of 2000 as the dot-com bubble was bursting, according to economist and strategist David Rosenberg. With tech leaders sagging and investors heading for cover, the widely followed market bear sees similarities between two eras that showed overheated investor sentiment and an overvalued market. "The massive daily swings reflect a manic market becoming unglued," the head of Rosenberg Research wrote in his daily market note Friday. "The action is highly reminiscent of what happened in the immediate aftermath of the Nasdaq rolling off the bubble highs in March 2000." Alfred E. Neuman feeling when I look at the action in the equity market and the reasons for this relentless exuberance," Rosenberg said.

The Republican convention, which provided a portfolio of memorable (or at least memeable) images, was borne on a typhoon of words. But politics doesn’t speak only the language of policy and platitude. AgainWhen the MAGA movement was born during the 2016 campaign, it was possible to wonder about the specific meaning of the last word. When had America been great, or not been great or stopped being great? On the last night, the original formula was tweaked to “Make America Great Once Again,” which doesn’t yield an easily pronounceable acronym (MAGOA?)

Donald J. Trump has long been a man undone by himself. He imperiled his presidency and political campaigns with personal grudges, impulsiveness and an appetite for authoritarianism. But on Thursday night, with his right ear still bandaged five days after he was wounded by a would-be assassin’s bullet, Mr. Trump attempted a politically cunning transformation. He opened his address by casting himself as a unifying figure, promising to bridge political divides he had long delighted in deepening. “The discord and division in our society must be healed — we must heal it quickly,” Mr. Trump said on the Republican convention’s final night.

The uproar over the Trump assassination attempt may pause the intraparty rebellion against Biden for now, especially as he assumes his role as the leader of a nation in sudden crisis. In a nation that was already deeply divided, the core vote for both Trump and Biden was probably locked in. There can be no justification for an assassination attempt on a candidate — an assault on democracy. Many Republican politicians issued calls for calm and an easing of political rhetoric after the shooting — as did Democrats. And Johnson accompanied his calls for calm by implying that Democrats — in advancing their arguments against Trump — had somehow abetted the assassination attempt.

The soccer ball went out of bounds and the goalkeeper was lofting it toward his teammates as dozens of people looked on from the sidelines of the courtyard. It was a moment of respite in the Gaza Strip — but it did not last. Before the ball reached the ground, a large boom shook the yard, sending players and spectators fleeing in frenzied panic. The Gazan authorities say that at least 27 people were killed on Tuesday in that explosion, which was caused by an Israeli airstrike near the entrance to a school turned shelter on the outskirts of Khan Younis, in southern Gaza.

London CNN —The Labour Party’s projected victory in the UK general election marks a historic moment in modern British political history and a huge personal triumph for Keir Starmer, the Labour leader who is set to become the country’s next prime minister. Starmer’s victory is all the more remarkable considering the journey that Labour has been on since the last general election in 2019. It was in this context that Starmer took control of a broken Labour Party on April 4, 2020. On that day, David Lammy, one of his Labour colleagues, took him to one side and warned Starmer: “Set yourself a 10-year cycle. There has for months been a working assumption that a Starmer victory would be in part thanks to a general disdain for the Conservatives after 14 years in power.

Reuters —Unidentified armed men have killed around 40 people in an attack on a village in insurgent-plagued central Mali, local officials said on Tuesday. “It was a very serious attack, armed men surrounded the village and shot at people,” said Bankass Mayor Moulaye Guindo by phone. He was not able to share a death toll, but two local officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said around 40 people were killed. Violence has spiraled in West Africa’s central Sahel region since the insurgencies took root in Mali and spread into neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger, killing thousands of people and displacing millions more. The insecurity has helped spur two coups in Mali, one in Burkina Faso, and one in Niger since 2020.
