The House speaker election is days away after Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster that has left the chamber in need of a successor. Two candidates have formally announced their bid for the speakership – House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio. House Republicans are set to hold their own candidate forum behind closed doors on Tuesday before holding an internal election and chamber-wide vote in the following days. “No candidate for Speaker is likely to receive 96 percent of the Republican Conference vote required by this new precedent,” Rep. Tom McClintock of California said in a statement. But the California Republican made clear after the vote to boot him from the role that he wouldn’t run for speaker again.

A source familiar with the matter said Jordan and Scalise talked Friday and they agreed it wouldn’t be wise, so the forum is now off. CNN reported Thursday the House GOP conference was scheduled to have an in-person meeting at 6 p.m. ET on Monday ahead of the GOP’s speaker candidates’ forum on Tuesday and their internal election on Wednesday. Fox News said in a press release Friday morning that Baier was holding an “exclusive joint interview” with Scalise, Jordan and Hern from the Capitol on Monday. The Republican conference needs a family discussion.”Multiple House Republicans told CNN they were infuriated by the decision for speaker candidates to participate in a televised interview from the Capitol on Monday before speaking to the GOP conference, and several of them have already communicated those frustrations to the speaker candidates.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump seized the spotlight at the Iowa State Fair this weekend, swooping overhead in his private plane just as his chief Republican rival, Florida Gov. The 2024 Republican presidential race played out in close quarters as Trump and DeSantis joined the crowd of thousands. Trump had traveled to Iowa with an entourage largely designed to troll DeSantis. “Iowa pork is delicious & provides nearly 1 in 10 working Iowans a job, but Ron DeSantis would be an utter catastrophe for Iowa,” the flyer said. The former president made his way to the famous “pork chop on a stick” stand while onlookers chanted “USA.”Unlike DeSantis, Trump did not grill pork chops himself.

Nine Florida lawmakers will join Trump at the Iowa State Fair. This is just the latest way Trump has found to needle the Florida governor. The Iowa State Fair is a major event for presidential hopefuls, who often flip pork chops and gawk at the butter cow alongside Iowans and throngs of journalists. Trump previously raised eyebrows at 2015 State Fair when he offered children free helicopter rides. A representatives for DeSantis' campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump is set to return to the campaign trail Saturday, traveling to Georgia and North Carolina for speeches at a pair of state Republican conventions as news of his federal indictment roils the party’s 2024 presidential race. The pre-planned stops come the day after the Justice Department unsealed its indictment laying out the government’s case that Trump and aide Walt Nauta mishandled classified national security documents. The visits will give Trump a chance to respond to the charges in a campaign-style as he mounts battles on both the political and legal fronts. So far, Trump has cast his prosecution as a politically motivated effort to stop his bid for the presidency. In March, the Manhattan district attorney in New York indicted Trump on charges related to hush-money payments to a former adult star.
