Such a strong report would normally be cheered by investors, because it brightens the outlook for economic growth and expanding corporate profits. But this one dampens expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate cuts later this year. In terms of the rate cuts that [are] now priced in. En masse, they are becoming more cautious about executing future rate cuts. While a strong labor market is good for the U.S., there are worries that too strong of a jobs market will put reflation back on the table."

New York CNN —US stocks fell Friday after the December jobs report showed another month of strong employment, complicating the Federal Reserve’s rate-cutting campaign. The Dow dropped by more than 550 points, or 1.3%; while the S&P 500 fell by 1.4% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq index was lower by 1.75%. The selloff comes as the economy added 256,000 jobs in December, far outpacing expectations of around 153,000 jobs. While strong job growth signals a healthy economy, it raises the question of how soon the central bank needs to cut interest rates again. Traders now expect just a 2.7% chance the Fed will cut rates at its policy meeting later this month, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

With consumers and businesses gloomy about the prospects of the world's second-largest economy, loan growth has stalled. Beijing's stimulus push has so far not been able to spur consumer credit demand, and is yet to spark any meaningful rebound in the faltering economy. In November, the new bank lending stood at 580 billion yuan, versus 1.09 trillion yuan a year earlier. Goldman Sachs sees growth in the world's second-largest economy slowing to 4.5% this year, and expect credit demand in December to have slowed further from November. For this year, authorities have vowed to make boosting consumption a top priority and to revive credit demand with lower corporate financing and household borrowing costs.

When the Federal Reserve began lowering interest rates in September, inflation was cooling and the job market was showing some troubling signs of weakness. Three months and a full percentage point of rate cuts later, the opposite is true: The job market seems to have stabilized, but progress on inflation has stalled. As a result, the central bank is widely expected to pause its campaign of rate cuts at its meeting this month, a message reinforced by Fed officials in a series of speeches this week. “While it is not my baseline outlook, I cannot rule out the risk that progress on inflation could continue to stall,” Michelle Bowman, a Fed governor, said in a speech on Thursday.

Retail trade, which added 43,400 jobs, and leisure and hospitality, up 43,000, scored the second- and third-largest increases last month. Retail trade jobs are in or outside a store, from infomercials to street vendors to vending machines, can sell to consumers or other businesses and involve after-sale services, such as repair and installation, the BLS says. Last month, health care and social assistance jobs saw the largest gains for a third consecutive month, adding 69,500 to payrolls, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics .
