A newly remodeled Ford F250 Super Duty truck is displayed at the new Louisville Ford truck plant in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S. September 30, 2016. UAW President Shawn Fain on Wednesday ordered a strike at Ford's Kentucky Truck factory after Ford negotiators did not present a richer contract proposal. About 4,600 Ford workers could be idled because their jobs depend on production of Super Duty pickups and large Lincoln and Ford SUVs at Kentucky Truck, said Ford manufacturing vice president Bryce Currie. Already, 13,000 workers at Ford suppliers have been furloughed because of earlier UAW walkouts at two Ford assembly plants, Ford supply chain chief Liz Door said. Fain and other UAW officials called a meeting with Ford at on Wednesday evening and demanded a new offer, which Ford did not have, a Ford official said.

The UAW said that 8,700 union members at Ford's Kentucky truck plant went on strike after the union said the No. [1/4]United Auto Workers (UAW) members strike outside of Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S. October 11, 2023. Even with Wednesday's walkout, only about 22% of the 150,000 UAW workers at the Detroit Three automakers are on strike. The walkout in Kentucky will put stress on Ford UAW members beyond the sprawling factory near Louisville. Workers at a dozen other Ford plants that supply engines, transmissions and other components to the plant could be furloughed.

A newly remodeled Ford F250 Super Duty truck is displayed at the new Louisville Ford truck plant in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S. September 30, 2016. Analysts at Wells Fargo estimated that Ford will lose about $150 million per week in core profit from the Kentucky plant strike. Even with 8,700 workers at Ford's Kentucky Truck plant now on strike, less than a quarter of the 150,000 UAW workers at the Detroit Three automakers are now on strike. Ford warned on Wednesday that workers at a dozen other factories could be sent home because of the truck plant walkout. Its Kentucky truck plant, the company's most profitable operation, generates $25 billion in annual sales, about a sixth of Ford's global automotive revenue.

"Our strike is working, but we’re not there yet," UAW President Shawn Fain said in a livestreamed update on negotiations with the three automakers. Threatening to strike against GM's Arlington, Texas, plant that makes cash-cow SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade spurred GM to agree that EV battery factories would become union plants with UAW contracts, Fain said. GM is building three Ultium joint-venture battery plants with South Korea's LG Energy Solution (373220.KS). GM is building a fourth U.S. battery plant with Samsung SDI (006400.KS) in Indiana. Fain also said on Friday that the UAW could still strike against highly profitable pickup truck plants if progress stalls.

GM agreed to have the workers at its future EV battery plants be covered by the national labor agreement governing other UAW members at GM, Fain said, after the UAW threated an expansion of the strike to a GM plant in Arlington, Texas, that assembles the company’s full-sized SUVs. GM has in the past insisted that workers in battery facilities are not GM employees, since the plants are run by joint ventures it has with Asian battery companies. Then on September 29 the UAW declined to expand the strike against Stellantis, once again citing progress in talks, but added a strike against one assembly plant each at GM and Ford. The union has said all along it stood ready to expand the strike to increase pressure on the companies. Fain described the Arlington plant “GM’s biggest money maker.”“It was that threat that brought GM to the table,” he said.

UAW President Shawn Fain plans to update the union's 150,000 members at Ford, General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI) on Friday, a person briefed on the union's plans said. In addition to Ford, talks with Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI) and other automakers and the UAW have been active in recent days, sources said. Ford Chief Financial Officer John Lawler said Friday the automaker's retirement offer would assure UAW workers could retire with $1 million in savings. The targeted strike against the Detroit Three automakers began on Sept. 15 and is now in its 20th day. Rival Ford Motor (F.N) secured a $4 billion line of credit in August, ahead of the Sept. 14 UAW contract expiration.

The strike cost at GM reflects 16 days in which production was stopped at one GM assembly plant, a mid-size pickup truck and van factory in Wentzville, Missouri. The UAW ordered a strike at a GM SUV assembly plant in Lansing, Michigan, on Sept. 29. Against that backdrop, GM said in a securities filing that it has locked in a new, $6-billion line of credit through October 2024. The additional liquidity will require GM to maintain at least $4 billion in global liquidity and $2 billion in U.S. liquidity. Rival Ford Motor (F.N) secured a new $4 billion line of credit in August.

UAW President Shawn Fain has transformed the rituals of contract talks with General Motors(GM.N), Ford(F.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI) into a high-stakes, made-for-media game. GM and Ford said Monday they were indefinitely laying off another 500 workers at four Midwestern plants, citing the impact of the walkouts. Analysts looking ahead to third-quarter financial results this month are starting to reckon the costs of what the UAW calls "Stand up strikes." Ford plans four EV battery plants in the U.S. - three under joint ventures with South Korean battery maker SK On(096770.KS). GM's joint venture battery plants also have separate status and GM has declined to include them in negotiations.

Qualcomm is best known for the chips and modems inside Android phones. But in recent years, it's also started selling a package of hardware chips, sensors and software called Snapdragon Digital Chassis to automakers like GM , Hyundai and Volvo. It reported $1.32 billion in sales in its fiscal 2022, or about 3% of the company’s overall sales. Qualcomm makes between $200 and $3,000 per car that use its chips and software, officials said last fall at an investor event. Qualcomm faces stiff competition from other chipmakers in the car chip business.

That resulted in the other protester “being punched in the face by fans” of the celebrity, according to the suit.

General Motors said Tuesday that it planned to equip all its electric cars and trucks with the capability to act as backup power supplies during blackouts. The decision to install two-way charging technology in Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC electric cars and trucks, enabling them to power homes in an emergency, shows how carmakers are marketing the vehicles as not just cleaner than their gasoline counterparts, but also more practical. The technology will begin appearing in vehicles this year, including an electric version of the Silverado pickup and an electric Cadillac Escalade, which G.M. electric vehicles will have what is known as vehicle-to-home technology, the company said. planned to discontinue the compact car but reversed the decision last month after people complained about the disappearance of one of the most affordable electric vehicles.

SummaryLaw Firms FTX founder allegedly misappropriated customer funds for European acquisitionFTX failed to find a buyer for the company in bankruptcy saleNEW YORK, July 13 (Reuters) - Bankrupt crypto exchange FTX sued insiders at FTX Europe AG late Wednesday, seeking to recover $323 million that FTX had invested in an ill-fated expansion into European crypto markets. After FTX filed for bankruptcy in November, it sought to sell FTX Europe, only to conclude that no buyer would offer meaningful value for the company, according to FTX. FTX acquired Digital Assets for nearly $400 million in three transactions in 2020 and 2021, hoping to obtain regulatory approvals and expand into European markets. FTX filed for bankruptcy protection in November, saying it was unable to completely repay customers who had deposited funds on its exchange. Prosecutors have charged Bankman-Fried, 31, with stealing billions of dollars in FTX customer funds to cover losses at its affiliated hedge fund Alameda Research.

This should enable the automaker to reap tens of billions of dollars in additional profit, according to Reuters estimates, before it shifts completely to zero-emission electric vehicles in 2035. It never said when exactly it would stop producing gasoline-powered trucks and SUVs, though suppliers and analysts expected it would be well before 2035. GM plans to run its heavy-duty combustion pickups at both plants until 2035, according to AFS, which provides data and analysis to vehicle manufacturers and suppliers. The automaker will gradually reduce annual production of its big SUVs in Arlington as it begins to introduce new electric companions, starting around mid-decade. By 2030, AFS forecasts Arlington production could drop to around 200,000 vehicles, which could still produce at least $2 billion in pretax earnings.

DETROIT – General Motors plans to invest more than $500 million in a plant in Texas to prepare the facility for production of its highly profitable next-generation large SUVs. GM on Monday made a similar announcement for its next-generation heavy-duty pickups, which share the frame of the large SUVS. The truck investment included more than $1 billion in two Michigan plants for production of next-generation heavy-duty trucks. The automaker recently confirmed an all-electric version of its Cadillac Escalade but declined to disclose when the vehicle will come to market. The investment announcements come ahead of contract negotiations between the Detroit automakers, including GM, and the United Auto Workers union this summer.

GM's first all-electric Cadillac Escalade will be called the "Escalade IQ," which continues Cadillac's EV naming strategy that so far includes the Lyriq crossover and upcoming Celestiq ultra-luxury sedan. DETROIT – General Motors on Monday confirmed plans to introduce an all-electric version of its flagship Cadillac Escalade later this year. An electric Escalade was expected, as the company plans to fully convert Cadillac into an electric vehicle brand by 2030. The Cadillac Escalade IQ is anticipated to utilize GM's Ultium battery cells, motors and technologies, which the automaker is using to power and underpin its next-generation EVs. But just because it's called an Escalade doesn't necessarily mean it'll be identical to the brand's iconic internal combustion engine-powered SUV.
Tiny homes, big problems

Beyond their star appeal, low-cost tiny homes like Casitas have real-world utility. The homes have been seized upon as a solution for cities like Los Angeles to house the homeless. They showed off their homes' transportability by hitching several of them to a Tesla and filming drag races between Teslas and trucks that were hooked to trailers carrying the homes. So far, though, after a little more than a year of building, the company has fabricated only about 400 homes. Even if it were churning out thousands of units, Boxabl hasn't yet received the certifications required to sell them in most states across the country.

Front cameras could help prevent these deaths, safety experts say. On Monday, he announced legislation that would make front blind zone safety features mandatory for motor vehicles. After Congress passed a law to improve rear blind zone safety nearly 15 years ago, it took a decade — rulemaking, regulatory delays and a multiyear rollout — before it fully went into effect. Blumenthal’s bill directs regulators to determine what technology, such as cameras or sensors, to require to make front blind zones safer, much like the rear blind zone law did. But she believes the best way to prevent future tragedies is widespread use of blind zone cameras.
CNN Business —Rolls-Royce will start production of its first electric car next year. That’s fairly sleek, but just in the ballpark among modern electric cars. Even an electric Rolls-Royce could hardly go without the grille, though, since the upright, tombstone-shaped slab of metal slats is among the most genuinely iconic in the industry. This follows the strategy of Rolls-Royce’s parent company, BMW, which also relies on flexible engineering that can be used to build both gasoline and electric cars. Usually automakers try to conserve weight when making electric cars to make up for all the mass the batteries themselves add.
2024 Cadillac Celestiq CadillacDETROIT – Cadillac is testing the limits of its brand allure and pricing power with the 2024 Celestiq – a large, bespoke electric car that will start at more than $300,000. The vehicle – unveiled Monday night – launches the General Motors brand into the ultra-luxury segment against the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce. Executives say the vehicle is more about creating a "halo car" that helps burnish Cadillac's image, rather than fueling overall sales or profits. 2024 Cadillac Celestiq CadillacHarvey declined to discuss the vehicle's profit margins or whether the company plans to add additional hand-built models. Cadillac has not sold a hand-built vehicle for decades, but its crosstown rivals have offered such cars as custom performance models.
