Javier Milei presidential candidate of the La Libertad Avanza (Freedom Advances) party, speaks at the campaign closing event on Oct.18, 2023. Argentina elected libertarian outsider Javier Milei as its new president on Sunday, rolling the dice on an outsider with radical views to fix an economy battered by triple-digit inflation, a looming recession and rising poverty. Official results showed Milei with near 56% versus 44% for his rival, Peronist Economy Minister Sergio Massa, who conceded in a speech. His candidacy was hampered by the country's worst economic crisis in two decades while he has been at the helm. I have contacted Javier Milei to congratulate him," Massa said.

Aguascalientes chief prosecutor Jesus Figueroa told Radio Formula that Baena was found with 20 lacerations from a shaving razor, including one to the neck that was likely fatal. Marcelo Bielsa's 24-man list also included fellow striker Edinson Cavani but he has withdrawn after a muscle injury in Boca Juniors' 1-0 win over Newell's Old Boys on Sunday. Mexican club Leon's Federico Vinas has therefore been drafted in as a late replacement. The 36-year-old Suarez, who played his last game for Uruguay in the 2-0 win over Ghana in December at the World Cup, has made 137 international appearances, scoring 68 goals. The striker could return to the top of the all-time South American World Cup qualifying scoring charts, where he trails Argentina's Lionel Messi by two goals with a total of 31. Another record within reach is the number of games played for Uruguay in World Cup qualifiers, currently held by Diego Godin with 65 appearances, three more than the Gremio forward.

Before the mayhem of Monday's home defeat against Chelsea, Wolves away would have been viewed as another opportunity for Tottenham to underline their top-four credentials. But that 4-1 reverse, Postecoglou's first setback in the Premier League, could cost the north London club more than a return to top spot and the loss of three points. A tumultuous derby ended with Tottenham having only four of their starting line-up left on the pitch. A home game against City will perhaps say a lot more about whether or not Chelsea have turned a corner. Former midfielder Paul Scholes believes Ten Hag still has some credit left in the bank after last season when United finished third in the Premier League and won the League Cup.

CHISINAU, Moldova (AP) — Moldovans are casting ballots in nationwide local elections on Sunday as authorities say that Russia has been conducting “hybrid warfare” to undermine the vote in the European Union candidate country. While local elections in Moldova, a country of about 2.5 million people situated between Romania and Ukraine, wouldn't usually garner much international attention, ongoing accusations of Russian meddling add a geopolitical dimension to the vote. On Friday, Moldova’s national intelligence agency published a report alleging that Russia was trying to “influence the electoral process” through the party. Shor was the head of the Russia-friendly Shor Party, which was declared unconstitutional in June by Moldova’s Constitutional Court. “Russia has always been trying to undermine democratic elections in Moldova, particularly in an effort to derail European integration aspirations,” Cantir said.

WHOEVER SAID a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush hasn’t been to the cloud forests of Colombia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains. A flowerpecker darts around a giant fern, and a pair of military macaws fly in formation overhead. About a dozen species of amethyst, emerald and sapphire hummingbirds hover like bejeweled drones over a marmalade bush. Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

Argentines were going to the polls Sunday, as frustrated voters weigh handing the presidency to an anti-establishment, right-wing populist who has shaken up the political system and pledges to drastically overhaul the state. "Argentina is in for a wild ride," Benjamin Gedan, director of the Latin America program at the Washington-based Wilson Center, said. Whatever the results, Milei has already inserted himself and his libertarian party into a political structure dominated by a center-left and a center-right coalition for almost two decades. Argentines were also buying dollars and removing hard currency deposits from banks as the peso accelerated its already steady depreciation. That message resonated among many Argentines who watched their economic prospects wither under successive administrations in which both Massa and Bullrich served.

"You have to have a backbone to govern this country," Bullrich, the candidate for the Together for Change coalition, told Reuters at a recent press event. Bullrich is facing front-runner libertarian economist Javier Milei, who is promising more extreme policies, and economy minister Sergio Massa. She also cited the strong political machinery of the conservative coalition. Bullrich, replying to Reuters, said that the coalition - win or lose - would be a strong political force with around 10-11 governors and large presence in Congress. Another voter, 61-year-old retiree Patricia Amalia Rojas, said she backed Bullrich for her tough line on gangs and crime.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Max Scherzer has pitched only once since a miserable night in early September that saw the Houston Astros complete an overwhelming three-game sweep of the Texas Rangers. The Rangers acquired the 39-year-old right-hander from New York in a deadline deal in hopes of starts just like this. Scherzer was dealing with forearm tightness six weeks ago when he allowed seven runs — all on three homers — over three innings in the Astros' 12-3 win. This time, the Astros need to win at least two of three games to extend the series and get back home. “The way we look at it, we were one hit in each game away from winning those games.

If the Twins force Game 5, it would be in Houston on Friday. The right-hander, who threw six hitless innings in World Series Game 4 last year to beat Philadelphia, lowered his career postseason ERA to 1.91 over 37 2/3 innings. With five walks and one hit batter, Javier provided the Twins plenty of opportunities to catch up. “It was a difficult day to hit, so them jumping out early was very, very important,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. He has allowed 13 earned runs, nine walks and three homers in 14 innings over three career starts against the Astros.

HOUSTON (AP) — Carlos Correa had three hits and three RBIs and Pablo López pitched seven shutout innings, helping the Minnesota Twins beat the Houston Astros 6-2 on Sunday night in Game 2 of their AL Division Series. He added a two-run single to center in the fifth, lifting the Twins to a 5-0 lead. López pitched a gem after leading the Twins to the victory in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series. The Astros had to hold off a Twins rally in the series opener, but they played from behind throughout Game 2. Correa's two-run single gave him 63 career RBIs in the playoffs, tying David Justice for third-most in MLB history.
