GOP presidential contenders have rushed to stand with Israel, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is trying to reinforce that stance by attacking a rival candidate, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. DeSantis has broadly described people living in Gaza as antisemites and said he would refuse to accept any refugees into the U.S. Haley, when on CNN Sunday asked about DeSantis's remarks, said, "America has always been sympathetic to the fact that you can separate civilians from terrorists.” On Tuesday, a group supporting DeSantis launched a TV ad accusing Haley of trying to be "politically correct." Haley, who has climbed in polls, shot back that a "desperate" DeSantis is lying about her record and said she opposes taking in refugees from Gaza.

New York CNN —Hawaiian Electric Industries’ stock plummeted another 10% Tuesday after S&P Global downgraded the company’s credit rating to junk. In a statement, S&P Global said the wildfires have placed the company at a higher risk, and that it there is a potential for further credit downgrades. More lawsuits could arise, further jeopardizing the company’s credit rating depending on how successful the plaintiffs are. S&P said that the class action lawsuits could increase risk for the company and deteriorate its credit quality. S&P also placed HEI and its entities on CreditWatch with negative implications, which means the utility’s credit rating could be further downgraded in the near future.

Hawaiian Electric was last trading down 35% at $20.90. Hawaiian Electric did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday. Hawaiian Electric Vice President Jim Kelly told CNN Sunday that the company does not comment on pending litigation. He added that Hawaiian Electric does not have a formal shut-off program and precautionary shut-offs have to be arranged with first responders, CNN reported. The suit alleges that Hawaiian Electric Industries “chose not to deenergize their power lines during the High Wind Watch and Red Flag Warning conditions for Maui before the Lahaina Fire started,” despite knowing the risks of sparking a fire in those conditions. The company and subsidiaries “also chose not to deenergize their power lines after they knew some poles and lines had fallen and were in contact with the vegetation or the ground,” the suit alleges. He added that Hawaiian Electric does not have a formal shut-off program in place, and precautionary shut-offs have to be arranged with first responders. Despite this, Hawaiian Electric (HE) did not enforce a public safety power shutoff, a temporary pause of service to certain areas due to increased fire risk. These included an $11 billion insurance settlement, as well as $1 billion paid to affected local governments.

Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks on the stage during a campaign rally in Windham, New Hampshire, August 8, 2023. Former President Donald Trump could face an unprecedented fourth indictment over his alleged efforts to overturn his loss in Georgia's 2020 presidential election, and top Georgia election official Gabriel Sterling said Sunday that the criminal cases have been "giving oxygen" to Trump's 2024 presidential campaign. Sterling, a Republican, said Trump lost the state in 2020 and that his repeated claims of election fraud have been unsubstantiated. Trump in a speech Tuesday in New Hampshire said he expects to be indicted in Georgia soon. "I should have four by sometime next week," Trump said.

The indictment describes how Trump and his lawyers pressured Pence to overturn Joe Biden's victory by refusing to certify the results in the Senate on Jan. 6, 2021. Pence told CBS' "Face the Nation" Sunday that if he is ultimately asked to testify, he will follow the law. Lauro added that Trump and his lawyers asked Pence to "pause the voting" to allow states time to audit votes, in an interview with CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday. "Frankly, the day before January 6, if memory serves, they came back — his lawyers did — and said, 'We want you to reject votes' outright," Pence said. And it's what no vice president in American history had ever done before, and frankly what no vice president or any one person in Washington should ever do again," he added.

Former Vice President Mike Pence said he's not concerned about Trump's rhetoric inciting violence. CNN's Dana Bash responded by noting some Trump supporters called for Pence to be hanged. The former vice president said he was "infuriated" by the violence on January 6 but argued that the ransacking of the US Capitol was carried out by a small minority of Trump supporters. After CNN played the recording of Trump's remarks, Pence said he could "hear my former running mate's frustration in his voice." Around the same time, according to videos posted from inside the US Capitol, some Trump supporters began chanting, "Hang Mike Pence."

The US began ramping up ammunition production last year when it became clear that the war would drag on far longer than anticipated. But the ammunition will still take “years” to mass produce to acceptable levels, National Security adviser Jake Sullivan told CNN Sunday. Ukrainian troops now typically fire between 2,000 and 3,000 artillery shells per day at Russian forces, a US defense official told CNN. It was necessary, though, because of how low US stockpiles are, Sullivan told CNN Sunday. “All of us have had to struggle stimulating our supply chains, some of which went to sleep,” he told CNN.

But while Ukraine’s NATO allies reaffirmed their support for Kyiv’s bid for membership, they remained vague about the timing. “Ukraine’s future is in NATO,” the leaders of the alliance declared in the summit’s final communique. This will change Ukraine’s membership path from a two-step process to a one-step process,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltengberg told reporters on Tuesday. John Avlon CNNRepublicans could try to stop Trump from seizing their presidential nomination with one simple reform – increasing proportional representation in the primary process. In fact, the number of GOP primary states that are winner take all increased from seven to 17 between the 2016 and 2020 election, according to an analysis by Gregory Korte at Bloomberg. Let’s say Trump wins 35% of the primary vote in South Carolina – with home staters Scott and former Gov. A supermajority of South Carolina Republican primary voters in this scenario would have voted for someone other than Trump to be their party’s nominee. Months before the first primary vote is cast, polls show that 44% of Republicans don’t even want the former president to run again.

New York CNN —A wrongful death lawsuit filed against several social media companies Friday alleges that social media lent to the radicalization of the gunman who shot and killed 10 people at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, last May. “However, the social media platforms that radicalized him, and the companies that armed him, must still be held accountable for their actions. Speaking to CNN Sunday, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown commended some of the victims’ families and survivors for tackling extremism on social media platforms. We deliberately designed Snapchat differently than traditional social media platforms and don’t allow unvetted content to go viral or be algorithmically promoted. Jerusalem CNN —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told CNN Sunday his country would remain a “robust democracy” despite controversial plans to overhaul the country’s judicial system. With the Israeli parliament starting its summer session on Sunday the proposals could be back in play. “Israel has been thrown off balance,” Netanyahu argued, as he often does when defending the judicial overhaul program. “The onus is on all of us” – Israel, the United States and our Arab neighbors – “to stop Iran from becoming a military nuclear power,” he said. Netanyahu also rejected Zakaria’s suggestion that the flare-up of violence between Israel and the Palestinians could torpedo Israel’s warming relations with its Arab neighbors.

US sanctions on Russia could threaten the dollar's hegemony, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told CNN. The Chinese yuan is a competitor to the US dollar, amid Beijing's big ambitions for the currency. "There is a risk when we use financial sanctions that are linked to the role of the dollar that over time it could undermine the hegemony of the dollar," Yellen told CNN's Fareed Zakaria in an interview. Of course, it does create a desire on the part of China, of Russia, of Iran to find an alternative," Yelled said. In January, the US dollar dominated global trade, accounting for about 85% of trade finance, according to a February report from global payments system Swift.
