New York City Mayor Eric Adams speaks during a press conference at the City Hall, after it was revealed that he received a fresh round of federal grand jury subpoenas, New York City, U.S., August 16, 2024. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted on criminal charges in federal court in Manhattan, a source familiar with the matter told CNBC on Wednesday night. The indictment, which remains sealed for now, at least in part accuses Adams of criminal conduct related to donations to his 2021 mayoral campaign. Adams, a 64-year-old former police captain, is at least the second New York mayor to be criminally charged while still in office. If Adams resigns before his first term in office ends, he would be replaced by New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams as acting mayor.

New York Democrats offered a wide array of excuses for their disastrous 2022 midterms, when Republicans flipped four seats outside New York City on their way to winning a narrow US House majority. Now, less than two months out from the 2024 general election, the state party, its campaign season allies, chastened candidates and Gov. D’Esposito is one of five New York GOP freshmen facing an onslaught from Democrats determined to claw back suburban voters. “New York is the reason Democrats lost the House in 2022,” said Pamela Shifman, president of the Democracy Alliance, a liberal group spending big in New York this year. “There’s more focus than there was the last couple cycles, both from the state party, but also obviously the national committees,” the strategist said.

Democrats, who represent most of those areas, fiercely objected at the time, accusing the GOP of using tax policy to wage a culture war. Schumer has vowed that if he’s still majority leader next year he will ensure the SALT cap expires at the end of 2025. I am glad to hear that former President Trump now feels the same way,” Lawler wrote on X. “Donald Trump and Mike Lawler, who helped elect him, are the reason we even have a limitation on the SALT deduction. The anti-debt Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget projected that eliminating the SALT cap would raise the cost of extending the 2017 tax law by $1.2 trillion.

Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced Hollywood mogul whose alleged sexual misconduct fueled the #MeToo movement, has been indicted on new charges by a New York City grand jury, Manhattan prosecutors announced during a court hearing Thursday. The new indictment is under seal, prosecutor Nicole Blumberg told Judge Curtis Farber, who has set a trial date for Nov. 12. NBC News was the first to report this month that a grand jury had been convened to hear from women who had come forward with new accusations against Weinstein, 72. Weinstein was convicted in 2020 of third-degree rape of one woman and first-degree criminal sex act against another woman after a trial in New York, where he was sentenced to 23 years in prison. New York prosecutors announced months later that they intended to recharge Weinstein for the same crimes and possibly bring forward new charges.

One image, however, has captured what the moment could mean for young girls. Amara Ajagu watches as Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, speaks on the fourth day of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center in Chicago, on Thursday, August 22, 2024. More so than most little girls, Ajagu can say that Harris could be the first president who looks like her. Harris’ potential to be the first has been an undercurrent of her presidential runs since her first campaign in 2020. Prior to the vice president’s speech, Amara and her younger sister, Leela, led the crowd in a lesson on how to pronounce their great-aunt’s first name: “Comma,” like the punctuation mark, then “La,” like the sing-song “la, la, la.”

Former President Donald J. Trump covered a range of topics on Monday during his two-hour, live-streamed chat on X with Elon Musk, the tech billionaire who has endorsed Mr. Trump’s latest presidential run. On climate issues, Mr. Musk described himself as “pro-environment,” saying that the electric vehicles produced by Tesla, his car company, disproved the idea that “caring about the environment should mean that you have to suffer.” Mr. Trump emphasized the importance of fossil fuels to the economy. Here are a few highlights from their discussion, with annotations by New York Times climate reporters. Musk: The economy would collapse without oil and gas“If we were to stop using oil and gas right now, we would all be starving and the economy would collapse. Yet even the most aggressive plans for tackling global warming envision a far-less abrupt transition that would phase out the burning of oil, gas and coal over several decades.

"Based on discussions with the Trump Organization, my understanding is that the Trump Organization does not intend to develop any estimations of value for any entity, the Trump Organization as a whole, or the guarantors' collateral," Jones wrote. Donald Trump no longer intends to calculate his own net worth for financial statements, this excerpt from a new report reveals. He has issued these net-worth statements — 20- to 30-page balance sheets formally called Statements of Financial Condition — since at least 2004. The firm declared the whole previous decade's worth of net-worth statements unreliable in 2022, saying it would stop preparing them. New York attorney general's officeThroughout the decade's worth of net-worth statements, Trump ignored generally accepted accounting principles, the AG and judge found.

Washington CNN —A federal judge on Wednesday refused to dismiss former President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against ABC News and George Stephanopoulos over the anchor’s assertion that a jury concluded Trump had “raped” E. Jean Carroll. Trump filed the lawsuit in Florida federal court earlier this year, arguing that Stephanopoulos and the network defamed him when Stephanopoulos said during a contentious on-air interview with Rep. Nancy Mace that a jury found Trump had “raped” Carroll, a writer whose own cases against Trump led to him being found liable for sexual abuse. ABC News did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment. In the Trump-ABC lawsuit, US District Judge Cecilia Altonaga, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, wrote Wednesday that these definitions were different enough to let the case move forced. His analysis necessarily focused on what Carroll had and had not proved at trial, as well as the harm Carroll experienced from (Trump’s) abuse.

Even before Biden dropped out of the race, Rep. Chip Roy, the Texas Republican, filed a resolution in June after the president’s disastrous debate performance, calling on the 25th Amendment to be used against Biden. After Biden withdrew from the race, Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt, a Republican, wrote letters to Harris and the Cabinet officials in the Biden administration, asking them to remove Biden from office. To forcibly wrest power from a sitting president, the vice president would have to be on board, according to the text of the amendment. Why do we have the 25th Amendment? That was before the 25th Amendment, so there was no constitutional rule.

Inflation is slowing down, but prices are still high — and likely to stay that way. However, even a broad pullback in price increases underscores another bitter reality: We're still paying more for many goods and services with little relief in sight. "Cooling inflation is not the same as a substantial reduction in prices," said Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst at Bankrate. Here's what experts say I should doThis 'bucket strategy' could lower your taxes in retirementIndeed, the rate of price increases for food has subsided. Monthly "food at home" inflation has been near 0% for the past four months, according to the latest government inflation data.

The vibe is trail-dad chic — think puffy Patagonia vests and Apple watches and stealth-wealth cashmere pullovers. Sun Valley is also widely believed to be the place where Jeff Bezos decided to buy The Washington Post, and the site of the meet-cute between Comcast and NBC Universal. There are also some notably absent names from the guest list this year. Bob Iger, CEO of Disney and one of the most recognizable business leaders on the planet, wore a name tag and aviators at last year's Sun Valley summit. Questions about President Joe Biden’s ability to campaign have wealthy donors and Democratic officials in a tizzy.
