Once again, Chipotle is staffing up ahead of " burrito season ." And once again, the people are asking: "What the hell is burrito season?" Burrito season, the company says, represents its busiest time of the year. When I asked a spokesperson for Chipotle to shed some light on the mysteries of burrito season, her answer was both straightforward and perplexing. But after confirming the existence of burrito season, I was still left with two big questions.

A "Now Hiring" sign is displayed in front of a Chipotle restaurant on October 07, 2022 in Washington, DC. Hundreds of thousands of restaurant jobs disappeared as bars and eateries shuttered, either temporarily or permanently. But even before Covid, restaurants struggled to hire and retain younger workers, who often seek internships instead. Chipotle on Wednesday also touted new benefits that aim to help those younger workers tackle financial challenges. Additionally, Chipotle workers can also sign up for a Credi.ai debit card, which builds credit without fees or interest.

Source: Salad and GoWhen Sweetgreen went public two years ago, co-founder and CEO Jonathan Neman said the salad chain aspired to be the "McDonald's of its generation." But another salad rival could beat Sweetgreen to the punch: Salad and Go. One of its 48 ounce salads costs less than $7 and comes with chicken or tofu, while a comparable salad from Sweetgreen costs about $12. Two years later, Morrison took over as chief executive, departing Wall Street's favorite chicken wing chain after a decade in favor of a little-known salad chain that then had only 50 locations. Other salad players, such as Sweetgreen, Just Salad or Salata, are usually in the same markets as Salad and Go.

Hands down, the best thing I had were fry bread tacos at Tiwa Kitchen in Taos, New Mexico. Dessert fry bread and a blue corn taco from Tiwa Kitchen. Sandoval, who is a member of the Taos Pueblo, handed me a cookie while we waited for my food. Taco Bell is stepping up its breakfast game to compete with McDonald's. But lately, fast-food chains such as Wendy's and Taco Bell have demonstrated that they want to steal breakfast customers from McDonald's. So I decided to put the breakfast menus of McDonald's and Taco Bell to the test. McDonald's and Taco Bell have more than a dozen breakfast items on their menus. Taco Bell leans into burritos and breakfast wraps, while the McDonald's menu is heavy on breakfast sandwiches.

McDonald's and Chipotle Mexican Grill will raise their menu prices in California next year to offset the state's minimum wage increase for fast-food workers, executives said as both chains announced quarterly earnings in recent days. McDonald's has not decided how much it will hike prices in California as workers' wages rise to $20 an hour, CEO Chris Kempczinski said Monday. Restaurants have been hiking menu prices for more than two years in response to rising ingredient and labor costs. Unlike Chipotle, which owns the overwhelming majority of its locations, most of McDonald's California locations are run by franchisees. "We believe we're in a better position than our competitors to weather this, so let's use this as an opportunity to actually accelerate our growth in California," Kempczinski said.

Chipotle Mexican Grill on Thursday reported quarterly earnings that beat expectations, helped by higher menu prices for its burritos and bowls. Shares of the company rose more than 5% in extended trading. Earlier this month, Chipotle raised menu prices for the first time in more than a year, citing inflation. Same-store sales rose 5%, beating StreetAccount estimates of 4.6%. The company credited higher transactions and menu prices for the quarter's same-store sales growth.

Chipotle is raising prices again

Chipotle has been raising its prices over the past few years, citing higher costs. In June of 2021, Chipotle said it was raising prices about 3.5% to 4%. So far at Chipotle, the increased prices haven’t scared people off — clearing the way for more expensive burritos. Even companies that have seen customers pull back due to the higher prices reported higher sales, because those higher prices offset volume declines. The snack and beverage company said it increased prices globally by 11% on average, helping nudge revenue higher than analysts’ expectations.

It's the second time the burrito chain has publicly announced testing automation at its innovation center. Roughly two-thirds of all Chipotle digital orders are either burrito bowls or salads, according to Chipotle. The Hyphen robot will make burrito bowls and salads for digital orders only. Simultaneously, an employee can assemble digital orders for other items, such as tacos, quesadillas and burritos, on the digital make line.
