I've gotta say, sadly: It's the Temu version of Temu. It's Amazon's attempt to compete with cheap e-commerce apps like Temu, Shein, and the TikTok Shop. The Haul section of Amazon's app is now in beta mode. The sweater section on Amazon's Haul section has a familiar aesthetic. But for now, to me, it just feels like a sort of crummy version of Temu.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service has responded to 537 blazes since early October, which have burned thousands of acres, Gov. Instead, they agreed upon a 32-hour workweek, in which employees retain their full-time positions with benefits but can enjoy reduced hours and schedule flexibility. The couple both work for the county, and say the shortened workweek has improved their quality of life. Ingman, a park manager in the county, said the 32-hour workweek made his job easier by attracting a better applicant pool. His wife’s employer recently adopted its own 32-hour workweek — using San Juan County as a template. Not all county employees are formally eligible for the 32-hour workweek; right now it only applies to the roughly 155 positions represented by the union.

Firefighters from coast to coast are battling wildfires even as the country begins to prepare for the holiday season, with fires in New Jersey covering thousands of acres in tinderbox conditions created by a historic drought. It's inevitable that this fire is going to continue to burn up until it reaches our control line," New Jersey Forest Fire Service Chief Bill Donnelly said at a news conference Sunday. In New York State the total is 60 wildfires covering 2,100 acres in the same timeframe. One blaze, the Hill Fire in Burlington County, has been burning since July 5, he said. There was some rain across the tri-state area Sunday night, but less than half an inch, the National Weather Service in Mount Holly said.

CNN —Republicans flipped the Senate, but Democratic candidates often outran the top of the ticket, winning at least four battleground states that Vice President Kamala Harris lost. Harris lost all seven swing states to President-elect Donald Trump, while her party’s Senate candidates narrowly held Wisconsin, Nevada and open seats in Michigan and Arizona. In some races, the differences between the Senate candidates’ and Harris’ performances were more pronounced among subsections of the Democratic coalition. While Trump won independents by 2 points, Rosen won the group by 6. Overall, Democratic Senate candidates received more votes than Harris in about half of this year’s races, including in less competitive states such as Minnesota, Virginia and Missouri.

CNN —Dangerous wildfires are burning on the East and West coasts Monday, with firefighters in New York and New Jersey working to contain a deadly blaze spurred by an ongoing, historic drought – while strong winds in Southern California could fan a destructive fire in Ventura County. Nearly 600 wildfires have burned nearly 7,000 acres in New Jersey and New York since October 1, according to officials. Most of the fires were in New Jersey, where the state’s Forest Fire Service has responded to 537 wildfires. “We were fortunate that the fire started at 9 o’clock in the morning, with daylight,” said Jim Fryhoff, the sheriff of Ventura County. Agricultural officials assessing the impact on farmland planted with avocados, citrus, and berries have estimated the damage at $2.4 million, the Ventura County Star reported.

Wind gusts and humidity are helping to fuel wildfires burning across the Northeast. A whopping 27 million people from New York to Massachusetts are under fire alerts Saturday afternoon. Cities under fire alerts include New York City and Boston, where wind gusts up to 35 mph and relative humidity of around 25% to 30% is expected. The active wildfires are increasing concerns around air quality, especially in the New York City area. Sunny and dry conditions are expected in the area Saturday, with wind gusts up to 20 mph.

Donald Trump’s return to the presidency has done something no political opponent could: put an end date on his time atop the Republican Party. Trump single-handedly remade the Republican Party in his own image, not only becoming its unquestioned leader but also rewiring what the Grand Old Party stands for. “We are getting four more years of Trump and then eight years of JD Vance!” Trump Jr. said last week as he campaigned for Ohio Senate candidate Bernie Moreno. He had a shaky start, but he has steadied himself,” a veteran Republican operative said. “A Trump win means [the 2028] field will be slower to develop,” a longtime Republican operative said.

Four years after losing the presidency, Donald Trump won it back in Tuesday’s election. The Republican nominee, who served from 2017-2021, defeated Vice President Kamala Harris to complete a historic political comeback. “I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of being elected your 47th president and your 45th president,” Trump said at an election-night event in West Palm Beach, Florida. Harris, the nation’s first female vice president, was hoping to shatter a nearly 250-year-old glass ceiling to become the nation’s first female president. “But hear me when I say: The light of America’s promise will always burn bright.”Here are some of the stories that made headlines over the past week, as well as some photos that caught our eye.

In today’s edition, we explore how Republicans are eyeing maintaining their current House majority and expanding their newfound Senate majority after Donald Trump's victory. But given Trump’s decisive victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, House Republicans are feeling bullish about their chances of preserving their slim majority. The party that will hold the majority in the House of Representatives in January 2025 has yet to be determined. Republican Tim Sheehy defeated Democratic Sen. Jon Tester in Montana, NBC News projected Wednesday morning, giving the GOP 52 Senate seats. And the races in Nevada between Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen and Republican Sam Brown and in Pennsylvania between Democratic Sen. Bob Casey and GOP challenger Dave McCormick are too close to call.

Harris offered to console Democrats over the loss to former President Donald Trump, acknowledging they were "feeling and experiencing a range of emotions right now." Trump never did when he lost to President Joe Biden and Harris in 2020. After Biden dropped out and endorsed Harris, Democrats reveled in the change, flooding donation channels and crushing fundraising records. The Biden campaign was skidding off course, setting off an eruption of party panic. Memorably, Harris offered a stinging rebuttal to Trump’s insistence on the debate stage that he had won the 2020 election.

CNN —Sen. Tammy Baldwin will win reelection in Wisconsin, CNN projects, in a victory for Senate Democrats trying to defend the so-called blue wall states despite losing them at the presidential level and having already lost their majority in the chamber. Baldwin will be returning for a third term to a dramatically shifted Senate. CNN has not yet projected the other “blue wall” Senate races – in Pennsylvania and Michigan – as of Wednesday afternoon. She also scored the endorsement of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation, a notable get for a Democrat running statewide. Republicans also attacked her over transgender issues, trying to paint the senator as too liberal for the state.

KYOTO, Japan — The world’s first wooden satellite, built by Japanese researchers, was launched into space Tuesday in an early test of using timber in lunar and Mars exploration. CNN —A series of Israeli raids and airstrikes in towns and villages in the occupied West Bank that stretched overnight from Monday into late Tuesday have killed at least eight people, according to Palestinian authorities and local residents. Two Palestinians were killed in the town of Tamoun, said the governor of nearby Tubas, Ahmad Assad, alleging that one of the bodies was removed from the scene by the Israeli military with a bulldozer. Two were killed by Israeli gunfire, and two others killed when an Israeli military vehicle rammed a car and opened fire, according to residents and video seen by CNN. Israel has previously described its stepped-up military offensives in the West Bank as targeting militants and “terrorist infrastructure.”The bloodshed comes as violence surges in the West Bank, where the Israeli military has intensified incursions following the Hamas-led October 7 attacks. Since October 7, 2023, Israeli troops and settlers have killed at least 775 Palestinians, including 167 children, in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, the Palestinian health ministry reported on Tuesday.

Israel carried out a series of precision strikes on military targets in Iran late last month. AdvertisementIran is signaling that it will deliver a harsh response to Israel's late-October strikes, which were revenge for Tehran's retaliatory ballistic missile attack at the start of the month. However, another direct Iranian attack on Israel — which would be its third ever — invites additional Israeli strikes at a time when Tehran is dangerously unprepared. Israel struck several S-300s, a Russian-made surface-to-air missile system considered to be the most advanced air-defense battery that Iran operates. He said last week that the strikes on Iran's air-defense network create "a huge disadvantage for the enemy when we will want to strike later."
