CNN —It was the years-long cruise that was supposed to set sail, but saw its departure postponed… postponed… and postponed again. However, there’s one crucial difference between Life at Sea and Villa Vie Residences, the company attempting the 3.5-year cruise: Villa Vie has a ship. This meant the certifications had expired – and instead of simply renewing them, Villa Vie was obliged to start from scratch. Olsen cruise ship. ‘Not what we were expecting’Angela and Steve Theriac have been traveling around Europe while waiting to set sail.

Buckley, 49, learned the social media slang for this sudden defiance, which is called “soiling the nest,” and said she felt that was happening with him. “It may look like picking fights with parents, talking back, leaving messes, and generally putting stress on their interpersonal relationships with their parents,” Galanti said. For teens graduating high school, the main psychological goal is to “develop and consolidate their own identities,” Galanti said. Creating this space between themselves and their parents makes the transition to this new independence phase easier for some teens, Galanti said. Florida-based writer Terry Ward lives in Tampa with her two young children, who are still squarely ensconced in the nest.

But memories weren’t enough for one British tourist, who was caught this week engraving the initials of himself and his family into one of the city’s 2,000-year-old houses. Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79CE and is now one of Italy's most popular -- and most fragile -- tourist sites. However in June, when a tourist from Kazakhstan was caught carving his initials on the House of the Ceii in the ancient city, Pompeii’s director Gabriel Zuchtriegel said that the tourist would have to pay for the restoration of the wall. A lesser charge for defacing heritage sites can impose fines between 10,000 to 40,000 euros. In 2022, an Australian tourist even rode a moped around the ancient site.

One of China’s most influential, and garrulous, nationalist voices on social media has suddenly gone quiet, and the country’s internet is wondering why. But in late July, Mr. Hu stopped updating his page, baffling readers and gratifying some of his critics. Mr. Hu has not explained his silence; nor have China’s internet authorities. But many in China think he has been censored, pointing to signs that party officials may have been irked — paradoxically — because Mr. Hu lauded them in the wrong way. In Mr. Hu’s view, the party used phrasing in its plan for the economy that suggested that China would reduce the status of state-owned companies, giving private companies a big boost.

The crowd condemned long-time Venezuelan socialist president Nicolas Maduro after he said he beat opponent Edmundo González Urrutia in Sunday’s election. “It’s really, really, really a congregation that we see all around the world that we showed to the world that it was a fraud and Venezuela deserved freedom,” said Gabriel Duque. Many are hopeful their voices will be heard and they can go back to their home country again soon. If you ask a regular Venezuelan, he’s going to tell you that he wants Maduro to leave because we want to go back to our country. And as soon as we remove Nicolás Maduro, you’re going to see, you’re going to witness all Venezuelans going back to our country because we never want to left,” Morin said.

The Olympics are a spectacle of athleticism, hard work, peak performance – and perhaps, for some, eating parmesan cheese. In one photo, she is hugging a cheese wheel close to her chest. Parmigiano-Reggiano, or parmesan cheese, is most famously made in the hills around Parma, about 65 miles northwest of Bologna. SailGP and US Olympic sailor Anna Weis is transforming the image of professional sailing. Weis is leading a new generation of women sailors challenging preconceived notions of female athleticism. With speeds of more than 60 miles per hour, the league is gaining a reputation as 'Formula 1 on the water.' No one was hurt, but the crash was a stark reminder of the high-adrenaline, high-stakes of the sport she has chosen. Vonn's experience competing at the highest level of a sport coupled with her perspective as a female athlete is an invaluable asset to the team, Weis says.

Now, another company aiming to be the first to produce a round-the-world residential cruise at a reasonable price has delayed departure by two months. Villa Vie Residences was due to depart from Belfast on May 30. But after a couple of unexpected hiccups, the ship – the Villa Vie Odyssey – is still in the Northern Irish city. Villa Vie had bought the ship from Fred. Meanwhile, two people who were part of the Life at Sea management when the cruise was canceled have announced their own rival outlet.

China engaged in a monthslong drumbeat of anticipation that a Communist Party leaders’ meeting would show the way to a new era of growth for the slowing economy. The outcome was a plan released on Sunday offering more than 300 steps on everything from taxes to religion. Many economists had called for a comprehensive effort to rebalance the Chinese economy away from investment and toward consumer spending. The party promised to “promote the development of strategic industries” in eight sectors, from renewable energy to aerospace. Those were essentially the same industries as in the country’s decade-old Made in China 2025 plan to replace imports of high-tech goods with locally produced products, as part of a national push for self-reliance.

Xi Jinping, China’s top leader, called officials together this week to hammer out ideas to pull the country’s economy out of its doldrums. But if the official summary of the meeting is a guide, Mr. Xi believes he already has many of the answers. His message to the 363 other officials who gathered in Beijing seemed to be: stick with his state-led, tech-focused strategy, only do it better. That is, make it cleaner, more fair and keep a careful eye on national security. China faces “a new wave of technological revolution and industrial transformation,” said the summary, released by official media on Thursday.

Chinese Coast Guard ships have sailed near Taiwan’s outer islands. When Lai Ching-te became Taiwan’s president in May, he vowed to stick with the China policies of his predecessor, Tsai Ing-wen. Ms. Tsai sought to avoid confrontation even as she defended Taiwan’s right to self-rule and rejected Beijing’s assertion of sovereignty. Yet Mr. Lai, while keeping Taiwan’s basic policy toward China unchanged, has been blunter in rebuffing its demands. Mr. Lai, who rose as a more plain-spoken politician, sees a need to more sharply lay out Taiwan’s separate status.

Xi Jinping, China’s leader, and 370 or so other Communist Party officials are meeting in Beijing this week, away from the public eye, to review a plan intended to shake the world’s second-biggest economy out of its malaise. Mr. Xi will sit in the front of a conference hall, most likely in the Jingxi Hotel, a 60-year-old institution with Soviet-style architecture. The party loyalists arrayed before him are near certain to acclaim his plans during the four-day meeting that started Monday and will consider a draft proposal on “further comprehensively deepening reform.”Chinese media have sought to create a buzz around Mr. Xi’s plans, but the real test may come later, as any changes in policy filter through the layers of government. Success or failure will largely turn on whether Mr. Xi is able to win renewed confidence from the Chinese population, as well as foreign investors who have grown disenchanted with his policies. China’s businesses and consumers have suffered in recent years through stumbling growth, a property sector meltdown and a blight of debt among local governments. On Monday morning, China released data that showed a sharp slowdown in economic growth.

The two tracts of land at the edge of the ancient forest in Borneo were relatively small: One was just 74 acres, the other 195. But starting in 2009, people from neighboring communities were hired by a local environmental group to help restore the land. They planted native seedlings, yanked out weeds, dug firebreaks and watered the area during droughts. The land bordered Gunung Palung National Park, home to endangered orangutans, pangolins, white-bearded gibbons and macaques, and researchers wanted to see if wildlife was coming back. The cameras documented 47 species of mammals, birds and reptiles, 18 of them at risk for extinction, including an endangered Sunda pangolin and two endangered Bornean orangutans.

What NATO’s Warning to China About Russia Means
  + stars: | 2024-07-11 | by ( Chris Buckley | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
China’s tight bond with Russia is facing renewed condemnation from Washington and its allies after NATO issued its strongest accusation yet that Chinese technology is sustaining Moscow’s war in Ukraine. Leaders from the NATO alliance, meeting in Washington, declared that Beijing “cannot enable the largest war in Europe in recent history” without facing repercussions. Despite a widening web of Western bans and restrictions, Chinese semiconductors, machine tools and other parts have become vital to Russia’s arms industries, helping Moscow to keep up its grinding war, say American and European officials, intelligence agencies and security experts.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary met with China’s leader, Xi Jinping in Beijing on Monday, courting another authoritarian partner after talks with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia in Moscow last week. In announcing Mr. Orban’s visit to Beijing, China’s official Xinhua news agency said only that Mr. Xi would hold an “in-depth discussion with him on issues of mutual interest.” The leaders last met two months ago, when Mr. Xi visited Budapest as part of a drive to restore Chinese influence in Europe. Chinese state television said that Mr. Xi and Mr. Orban were holding talks in the Diaooyutai State Guesthouse, but gave no other details. This meeting will give Mr. Xi and Mr. Orban, an outlier in the European Union on support for Ukraine and other issues, a chance to urge the bloc to distance itself from Washington. Hungary began its six-month rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union this month, giving Mr. Orban a higher profile, though not much more influence, in wider European affairs.

Tax-free shopping for tourists has been axed, and EU visitors now need a passport to visit, which most don’t have. Matt Cardy/Getty ImagesAs a result of Brexit, in 2021 the UK government abolished tax-free shopping for non-EU citizens. It means the UK is now the only European country not offering tax-free shopping to visitors from outside the continent. “The impact of losing tax-free shopping is clear to see,” says Dee Corsi, chief executive of the NWEC. “Whilst the likes of Italy and France are actively leveraging tax-free shopping as a driver of growth, British businesses continue to trade at a disadvantage.

CNN —The former leader of Northern Ireland’s most prominent pro-union party, Jeffrey Donaldson, will stand trial over allegations of historical sex offenses including one charge of rape. Eleanor Donaldson, center, is also set to stand trial in September. Niall Carson/PADonaldson led the DUP from 2019, throughout much of the turbulent Brexit process, regularly voicing his opposition to the Northern Ireland Protocol, a key part of the Brexit withdrawal agreement that ensured there was no hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Donaldson’s trial was announced as people in Northern Ireland were preparing to vote in the UK general election. Every year, in the waters off the California coast, hundreds of tankers, car carriers and container vessels from dozens of shipping companies take part in an unusual race. Awards are given to companies whose fleets voluntarily reduce speeds in marine areas where endangered whales migrate through and feed in. The prize, known as Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies, comes with a sculptural whale-tail trophy and bragging rights. “That’s the motivation right there.”The real winner may be ocean life. Slower ships also generate less ocean noise and fewer greenhouse gases and other air pollution.

But the latest workplace trends — "silent layoffs" and "quiet firing" — could be the most harmful to date. Silent layoffs occur when a company provides staff with severance packages but asks them to keep quiet about the details of their exit. In 2021, Chris Gloninger, a television weatherman in Boston with a passion for climate science, was approached with an intriguing prospect. Would he consider a job as chief meteorologist at a television station in Des Moines? The station, KCCI, wanted to amp up climate coverage, Mr. Gloninger said he was told, not least because agriculture was so important in the state. In announcing Mr. Gloninger’s hiring to the newsroom, Ms. Smith highlighted his extensive climate coverage. “My big takeaway was that there’s going to be a lot of climate involved,” said Mr. Serwe, now a meteorologist at KSTP in St. Paul, Minn.
