FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. — Christal Shola was one of dozens of people in a long stream of cars waiting to re-enter Fort Myers Beach on Thursday a few hours after Hurricane Milton slammed into the town. Week 2 of the NFL gave us some shocking upsets, an AFC thriller and some spectacular individual performances. That allowed the Chiefs to stay within a field goal — as did Cincinnati’s offensive struggles. After a Mahomes interception, Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was strip-sacked, and the fumble was recovered for a score on the next possession. Is the Saints’ offense really this good? The Saints scored touchdowns on five straight possessions to open the game, sandwiching long drives around explosive plays.

The Saints, one week after blowing out the lowly Carolina Panthers, did the same in Dallas to the high-flying Cowboys. The Ravens were in control for most of the game and then Davante Adams and Brock Bowers took over. The Ravens aren’t built to win when their defense softens — but that isn’t to say they won’t find ways to play the kind of defense the Ravens are known for. Meanwhile, the Saints’ defense denied the Cowboys on all three trips inside the red zone and recorded two takeaways. He made some strong in-structure throws, including a beauty to Noah Brown in the middle of the field late in the game to win the game.

Jim Sasser, who served 18 years in the U.S. Senate and six years as ambassador to China, has died. Gray Sasser, his son, said his father died Tuesday evening at his home in Chapel Hill, N.C., of an apparent heart attack. Sasser, a Democrat, represented Tennessee in the Senate from 1977 to 1995. President Bill Clinton then appointed him ambassador to China, a post he held until 2001. After he retired as ambassador, Sasser became a consultant.

CNN —The San Francisco 49ers put in a dominant showing to beat the New York Jets 32-19 on Monday, spoiling Aaron Rodgers’ return to NFL action. Rodgers returned to NFL action for the first time since Week 1 last season. Thearon W. However, the Jets offense then struggled to produce much until late in the third by which point San Francisco had built up a comfortable lead. NFL owners voted Tuesday to allow private equity firms to take a maximum 10% stake in teams. The league has never allowed private equity investment before. No other league takes a percentage of the so-called carry — the percentage of a fund's investment profits that managers typically receive as compensation — for all private equity firms. The NFL has informally told investment firms that if they make a return on an investment, it wants a portion of the profits to be returned to the league. It was unclear if the NFL's plans to take a piece of profits would deter future investment from private equity.

Then, in 2017, the hotel was damaged by Hurricane Maria, forcing it to close. Mr. Pierce planned to reopen it, using his crypto riches to revitalize both the glistening property and the local economy. A former child actor, Mr. Pierce knew how to put on a show.

Rachael Lillis, a voice actor who starred in many “Pokémon” films and series as the characters Misty, Jessie and more, died Aug. 10. Veronica Taylor, Lillis’ “Pokémon” co-star who voiced the lead character Ash Ketchum, posted a statement on X Monday morning that announced Lillis’ death. “It is with a very heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of Rachael Lillis on Saturday evening, 10 August 2024,” Taylor wrote. She voiced Misty, the gym leader who specializes in water-type creatures, in the original “Pokémon” anime in 1998. Lillis also voiced Jessie, one half of the villainous Team Rocket alongside her colleague James and their talking Meowth.

Only five sports — aquatics, athletics, cycling, fencing and gymnastics — have appeared in each of the 30 iterations of the Olympic Games. Host countries, as a result, now have more leverage than ever in adding to the Olympic program. The LA 2028 OCOG proposed five new sports for the Olympic program that were approved by the IOC in late 2023. The next edition of the summer Games will feature flag football and squash for the first time in Olympic history. It will also bring back baseball/softball, cricket and lacrosse — which was dropped from the Olympic program following a brief two-year stint in the early 1900s.
