Gold slides on brewing concerns of U.S. rate cuts still far off
  + stars: | 2024-01-11 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold bars and gold coins of different sizes lie in a safe on a table at the precious metal dealer Pro Aurum. Spot gold was down 0.1% at $2,024.99 per ounce, after rising as much as 0.8% before the data. The dollar index extended gains after data showed U.S. consumer prices rose more than expected in December, which could delay a much anticipated U.S. rate cut in March. Traders see a 67% probability of a rate cut in March, according to the CME FedWatch tool, compared with about a 71% chance seen before the report. Higher rates dim the appeal of gold, which pays no interest.

Indeed, studies show that drinking alcohol is less in vogue with younger millennials and Gen Z. Mounting concern around weight loss drugs GLP-1 drugs, which mimic the action of the glucagon-like peptide-1 hormone and stimulate insulin secretion after a meal, lower blood sugar and send feeling of fullness to the brain. What's more, GLP-1 drugs are an overwhelmingly American topic, with most Europeans unaware of them or unwilling to pay high prices. In total, GLP-1 users are only a very small slice of total alcohol consumers, said Spiros Malandrakis, lead alcohol industry researcher at Euromonitor International. The most vulnerable purveyors are those that are trailing the shift in consumption, notably domestic, non-premium beer brands.

Jeffrey Gundlach says long-duration Treasurys will make a good short-term trade in a recession. Gundlach also sees agency mortgage securities and commercial mortgage bonds as attractive. "We like long-term treasury bonds for the short-term trade going into a recession. "There has been about a 50% drawdown in the long bond, which means there is now potential for the long bond to go up in price." In calling a recession on the horizon, he also touted agency mortgage-backed securities and commercial mortgage bonds as attractive investments.

The cannabis company Tilray expanded its position in the craft brew industry, completing the acquisition of eight beer brands from Anheuser-Busch that it had announced over the summer. Included in the deal are well known labels like Shock Top, Breckenridge Brewery, Blue Point Brewing Company, 10 Barrel Brewing Company, Redhook Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewing, Square Mile Cider Company, and HiBall Energy. The New York City company also owns SweetWater Brewing Company, Montauk Brewing Company, Alpine Beer Company, and Green Flash Brewing Company. REUTERS/Rick Wilking/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 20 (Reuters) - Brewer Anheuser-Busch said on Wednesday it has stopped cutting off the tails of Clydesdale horses used in publicity for its Budweiser brand of beer after People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) launched a campaign against the practice. "The safety and well-being of our beloved Clydesdales is our top priority. The practice of equine tail docking was discontinued earlier this year," Anheuser-Busch, part of the Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI.BR) global brewing giant, said in a statement. Facing pressure from animal rights activists, Anheuser-Busch announced on Wednesday that it had ended the practice of amputating the tails of its Budweiser Clydesdales, the familiar equine figures in the brewing company’s advertising campaigns for nearly a century. The move came as Anheuser-Busch, Budweiser’s parent company, has faced criticism for the practice, which is banned in several countries and has been denounced as inhumane by animal welfare organizations. “The safety and well-being of our beloved Clydesdales is our top priority,” an Anheuser-Busch spokeswoman said in a statement on Wednesday. “The practice of equine tail docking was discontinued earlier this year.”Earlier this year, Anheuser-Busch drew criticism after the release of an investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, that documented the amputations at breeding and training facilities for the Budweiser Clydesdales in Missouri.

In the same period, benchmark Brent crude has risen 18% and European natural gas prices have gained 50%. He said higher oil prices could prompt upgrades to earnings estimates, and potentially dividends too. Aspen for Cheapskates

Over an $8.50 pint of craft beer from Aspen Brewing Company, which is comparable to what I pay at home in Chicago, I realized that Aspen, Colo., is not expensive by big-city standards. The Economic Research Institute, which compiles financial data for public and private organizations, pegs the cost of living in Aspen at 51 percent higher than the average in the United States, a little less than a city like Seattle. As a professionally penny-pinching traveler, I try to avoid paying urban prices in the mountains. In the summer in Aspen, apart from my weakness for microbrews, I didn’t have to. Cycling, if you can avoid expensive rentals, is a bargain.

New York CNN —Anchor Brewing, which has been America’s oldest craft brewer with 127 years in business, closed its taprooms for good on Sunday. There’s hope that could happen: Roughly two dozen different investors as well as a group of Anchor’s employees have “expressed interest in buying all or parts of Anchor Brewing,” company spokesman Sam Singer told CNN. Anchor got its start in 1896 in San Francisco, becoming the nation’s first-ever craft brewery. Under Sapporo’s ownership, production of Anchor’s beer declined every year except in 2021, according to the Brewers Association. Brewbound, a beer industry website, previously reported that Sapporo’s recent purchase of craft brewer Stone Brewing sparked concerns among Anchor’s employees of how their brewery fit into plans.

“The recent heat waves and scorching summer temperatures demonstrate the economic cost of heat stress,” Chris Lafakis, Moody’s Analytics’ director of economic research, wrote in an emailed response to a CNN query. Moody’s Analytics estimates that chronic physical risk from heat stress could reduce worldwide GDP by up to 17.6% by 2100. The losses are steepest in sectors such as agriculture and construction, but no industry or business is immune, she said. “Every summer we have a stretch [of excessively hot weather], where it might last from four days up to a week,” he said. “We have to look at the potential of our business model shifting to a nine-month facility going forward,” she said.

A brewery in California is using recycled wastewater to make beer, the New York Times reports. The company is using technology designed by NASA for astronauts to recycle water in space. Recycled wastewater tends to actually be cleaner than the water breweries can get on-site, multiple brewery owners told the Times. Last year, Stanford professor William Mitch published a study showing that wastewater recycled using reverse osmosis resulted in a product as clean as groundwater, sometimes even more so. Just last month, NASA reported that scientists on the International Space Station had successfully recycled 98% of their wastewater for the first time.

Unionized workers at Anchor Brewing Company, the oldest craft brewer in the United States, want to buy the 127-year-old company and run it as a co-op to save it from shutting down, a union official said. The workers have “decided to launch an effort to purchase the brewery and run it as a worker co-op,” according to a proposal letter from the Anchor employees. Pedro de Sá, the business agent at International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 6, whose members include workers at Anchor, sent the proposal on Wednesday to Mike Minami, the president of Sapporo USA, which owns the company. “All we want is a fair shot at being able to continue to do our jobs, make the beer we love, and keep this historic institution open,” the letter said. “We do not want the brewery and brand we love to be sold off before we even had a chance.”

Workers are reportedly offering to buy San Francisco's Anchor Brewing Co. and manage it themselves. Anchor, owned by Japanese beer giant Sapporo, announced this month that it would shutter. Anchor and Sapporo did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the letter or the closing from Insider. The Anchor workers aren't the only ones interested in buying and preserving the brand. Sapporo touted Anchor's "strong brand power" and potential for growth in a statement explaining its acquisition of the brewery in 2017.

Post-adventure, go for the summer version of après-ski at a trio of spots around Mountain Village. Telluride Brewing Company pours its refreshing I.P.A.s and other ales at a brewpub in the Hotel Madeline building (the brewery’s original tap room just west of Telluride remains a hub for locals who stream in after biking and kayaking.) Where to StayThe Telluride area has no shortage of luxe hotels, with the biggest concentration in Mountain Village. On the west side of town, the Hotel Telluride (rooms from $369) is a reliable option, with friendly service and a relaxed vibe. If you have a car and a limited budget, consider the Bivvi Hostel Telluride, open since 2020 in Placerville, about 16 miles down the valley.

But recent economic pressures proved too much for the oldest craft brewer in the country: After 127 years, Anchor Brewing Company is shutting down. Anchor added that although it had stopped brewing, it would continue packing and distributing beer while available. In 2021, Anchor Brewing tried to adapt, rebranding and bottling and canning more of its beers to sell in grocery stores. But those changes “couldn’t make up for the significant loss of sales,” he added. In a last-ditch attempt to stay afloat, Anchor limited sales of its beer to California, and stopped producing one of its products, a Christmas ale.
