The gunman who shot a longtime Santa Monica College employee is dead following a pursuit that ended in a standoff in El Segundo, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. Police say 39-year-old Davon Durell Dean, a Santa Monica College employee, shot his coworker Monday night on campus. At about 3 p.m. Tuesday, the suspect’s car was located in El Segundo. As a result of the standoff, access to Aviation Boulevard between 124th Street and El Segundo Boulevard was closed. In wake of the on-campus shooting, Santa Monica College said counseling and mental/emotional support services would be provided to students and faculty who have been impacted.

A 34-year-old woman was fatally shot Monday on a popular walking trail in Nashville, Tennessee, and police are urging the public to come forward with tips as they search for a suspect. Alyssa Lokits was found with a gunshot wound at about 5:30 p.m. on the Mill Creek Greenway off Old Hickory Boulevard, Nashville police said in a Tuesday statement. “The suspect fled the parking area in a dark colored 4-door sedan towards Old Hickory Boulevard. Three former Memphis police officers were convicted Thursday of federal witness tampering charges related to the deadly beating of Tyre Nichols in 2023, according to NBC News affiliate WMC. Demetrius Haley, Justin Smith and Taddarius Bean were accused of depriving Nichols of his rights through excessive force, obstructing justice through witness tampering and other crimes. Haley was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to witness tamper and one count of obstruction of justice for witness tampering. Bean and Smith were found guilty on only one count, obstruction of justice for witness tampering, WMC reported. The witness tampering charges carry possible sentences of up to 20 years in prison.

CNN —The US Secret Service is scrambling to increase security ahead of former President Donald Trump’s first campaign rally since the failed assassination attempt on his life last week, sources familiar with the planning told CNN. “We assist the Secret Service,” a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office told CNN, adding that the Secret Service was leading all security planning for the rally. Four people were killed and nine were injured after a minivan crashed into a nail salon on Long Island Friday afternoon, the authorities said. Shortly after 4:30 p.m., a minivan crashed into Hawaii Nail and Spa on Grand Boulevard in Deer Park, a hamlet in the town of Babylon, N.Y., according to according to Mark Stone, the public information officer for the Deer Park Fire Department. One injured person was in serious condition Friday evening and was transported by helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, he said. The others sustained “significant injuries,” Mr. Stone said, and were taken to local hospitals. Nine agencies responded to the crash, including fire departments from surrounding towns, and there were 150 firefighters and emergency medical responders on the scene, Mr. Stone said.
