Bolivian General Juan Jose Zuniga is presented following his arrest by the authorities for a coup attempt in La Paz, Bolivia June 26, 2024. Detained Bolivian general Juan Jose Zuniga was ordered to six months "preventive detention" for his role leading a failed coup against the government earlier in the week, a top prosecutor said on Friday. "This preventive detention that the judge is ordering will undoubtedly set a precedent and a good signal so that this investigation can continue to advance," Siles added. Before being arrested on Wednesday, Zuniga led military units to gather in the main square of capital La Paz, home to the presidential palace and Congress. Zuniga has said he was following an order from President Luis Arce, who has denied having any involvement in or prior knowledge of Zuniga's operation.

CNN —U.S. Soccer said it was “deeply disturbed” by the racist abuse directed at two of the men’s national team’s players following it’s surprise 2-1 defeat by Panama at the 2024 Copa América in Atlanta on Thursday. Defender Chris Richards and striker Folarin Balogun posted on their Instagram stories the racist messages they had received over the social media platform. Earlier in June, soccer’s global governing body FIFA reinforced its commitment to fighting online abuse, in particular through its Social Media Protection Service (SMPS). CNN —Bolivia has arrested more than a dozen high-ranking military and intelligence officials following a failed attempt to unseat the country’s president in a coup allegedly led by its former army chief. All three men are among 17 people arrested so far in connection with Wednesday’s events – most of them members of the military, the report says. Other top officials arrested include military intelligence chief Julio Buitrago. As he was being arrested Zúñiga alleged – without providing evidence – that he was acting on Arce’s instructions. The investigation into Wednesday’s events will continue until all “participants” in the coup are identified, according to the Bolivian government report.

Then, peering out over the country’s main political plaza on Wednesday, Bolivia’s top ministers saw the armored vehicles and troops spilling out their doors. Within moments, the president, Luis Arce, addressed his inner circle — “We are facing a coup!” — before heading to the presidential palace to confront, face to face, the general trying to remove him from power. The coup attempt failed, lasting a mere three hours, and ended in the arrest of the general, whose motivation for the attack appeared to be, at least in part, anger over his firing by Mr. Arce the day before. But it was hardly the end of Mr. Arce’s problem, or the challenges facing Bolivia. Mr. Arce, 60, a former finance minister, took office in 2020 during a democratic election that seemed to symbolize a new, more hopeful chapter in a country coming off a period of intense political tumult.

Gecko Capital's Maunakea Emerging Markets Debt Recovery Fund has delivered an impressive 74% return over the past year, and its fund manager is particularly bullish on two South American economies looking ahead. Maunakea's two largest positions are in Venezuela and Argentina, which Durand considers among "the most attractive and compelling" trades he has ever placed. Elections are expected to be held on 28 July which will be a key moment for investments in the country, according to the fund manager. However, the fund manager is optimistic that Argentina will reverse its economic woes. The next trade Durand said he is eyeing Bolivia, once a market darling that has recently experienced significant problems, for opportunities as its bonds start to trade at discounted levels.

Here’s how air turbulence can create problems for air travelers. In cases of light and moderate turbulence, passengers might feel a strain against their seatbelt, and unsecure items in the cabin may move around. In 2022, Williams, who co-authored the study, told CNN that he believed that severe turbulence “could double or triple in the coming decades.”He went on to attribute this to “clear air turbulence,” a type of turbulence that strikes suddenly is very difficult to avoid. Since it’s sometimes impossible to anticipate when an aircraft will encounter clear air turbulence, the only way to be 100% safe is to keep strapped in for the whole ride. The Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore, appears to encountered severe turbulence over Myanmar after crossing Southeast Asia’s Andaman Sea.

If approved by a panel of judges, the arrest warrants would be issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The decision to seek arrest warrants doesn’t immediately mean the individual is guilty, but is the first stage in a process that could lead to a lengthy trial. The ICC has so far issued arrest warrants against 42 people, 21 of whom have been detained with the help of member states.
