Bank stocks are at an all-time low compared with the S&P 500 based on relative prices, according to data from BofA Global Research. One key factor for bank stocks is whether the Federal Reserve is close to wrapping up a monetary tightening cycle that has brought the highest U.S. interest rates in decades. Yet signs the Fed may keep rates around current levels through most of next year have weighed on bank stocks. This month, analysts at BofA Global Research said investors should “selectively” add exposure to bank stocks in anticipation of an interest rate peak. Overall, about 61% of all outstanding mortgages have an interest rate below 4%, according to the Apollo Group, leaving consumers little incentive to refinance or move.

Coverage ratios hit their lowest since the first quarter of 2021, when companies in many sectors struggled with pandemic-related supply cost increases and weak demand. Median year-over-year earnings growth jumped 4.2% in the third quarter, from 0.6% in the second quarter, according to BofA Global. The median cost of debt increased to 3.77% in the third quarter from the second quarter - its highest since the fourth quarter of 2018. Companies' gross debt was little changed, but net debt growth turned negative for the first time since the third quarter of 2021. "(Investment-grade) issuers continued to manage their balance sheets conservatively in 3Q," wrote Yuri Seliger, credit strategist at BofA Global.

Nov 6 (Reuters) - Wall Street brokerages largely initiated Birkenstock (BIRK.N) with their top ratings, pointing to a likely boost from the German luxury sandal maker's recent investments to increase capacity, expansion into newer styles and brand loyalty. Birkenstock's shares dropped to as low as $35.83 in the days after listing on Oct. 11 and has traded below the IPO price of $46 apiece. Citigroup was among the most bullish, with a price target of $52, a more than 26% jump from the last close. Telsey Advisory Group analysts said Birkenstock has further avenue to expand into footwear categories such as orthopedics and professional, outdoor and active, kids, home, and sneakers. Morgan Stanley assigned a price target of $41 and an "equal-weight" rating, saying most catalysts were already priced in.

Nov 1 (Reuters) - Nutrien (NTR.TO) fell short of analysts' estimates for third-quarter profit on Wednesday, as lower potash prices weighed on the world's biggest fertilizer producer. Potash prices have been falling after shipments from Belarus and Russia resumed. Demand for fertilizers was also weak during much of the year, analysts have said, as farmers waited for prices to settle down. Potash prices averaged $250 per tonne during the reported quarter, the company said, compared with $633 per tonne a year earlier. Nutrien said potash sales volumes, however, climbed 23% on strong sales in North America.

Surging bond yields and mixed earnings reports have weighed on the so-called Magnificent Seven stocks, which are collectively down an average of about 15% from their 52-week highs, though they all still sit on hefty gains for the year. The stocks now trade at an average forward price-to-earnings ratio of about 30 times compared with 45 times in mid-June. I actually think the Magnificent Seven will hold up better,” said King Lip, chief strategist at Baker Avenue Wealth Management. Because the Magnificent Seven have a combined weighting of 28% in the S&P 500, their performance holds a large sway over the broader index. Lip said his firm owns shares of all seven companies and has recently added to its holdings in some of them.

Oct 27 (Reuters) - Bargain hunting drove investors to exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking technology companies after shares fell sharply on mixed earnings from heavyweights. The fund's price fell nearly 4% in the week, as mixed results from megacaps like Alphabet (GOOGL.O) weighed on the sector. Tech funds saw inflows of $2 billion in the week to Wednesday, their largest in eight weeks, according to BofA Global Research, which it attributed to investors "buying the dip". The $14 billion ProShares UltraPro QQQ (TQQQ.O) posted net weekly inflows of $68.15 million, even as the price of the fund fell 9.5%. REUTERS/Stefan Wermuth/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMILAN, Oct 26 (Reuters) - BofA Global Research downgraded Barclays (BARC.L) to underperform on Thursday, citing uncertainty over the UK bank's restructuring and near-term risks to capital distributions. "A potential material, but unspecified, restructuring charge to deliver unspecified benefits over an unspecified time period adds to uncertainty about Barclays strategy and financial target," wrote analysts at the U.S. bank. Barclays on Tuesday said it would embark on another restructuring round in the coming months to mitigate the effects of margin pressure from competition in the savings market and another lacklustre performance from its investment bank. Barclays shares have lost over 17% so far in 2023 and on Thursday, were down 1.3%, in their seventh straight daily fall.

This year’s climb in Treasury yields is changing that calculus, as government bonds offer income that is viewed as risk-free to investors who hold them to term. The 10-year Treasury yield has climbed about a full percentage point since then. The term premium is the added compensation investors expect for owning longer-term debt and is measured using financial models. Stocks have averaged a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 17.8 over the last 10 years, while the term premium has averaged -0.3%. That compares with a historical average forward P/E of 15.6 and a term premium of 1.4% since 1985.

Expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates elevated and mounting U.S. fiscal concerns are among the factors driving the move. Because the $25-trillion Treasury market is considered the bedrock of the global financial system, soaring yields on U.S. government bonds have had wide-ranging effects. "The longer we remain at higher interest rates, the more likely something is to break." Elon Musk warned that high interest rates could sap electric-vehicle demand, which knocked shares of the sector on Thursday. A United Auto Workers (UAW) union member wears a pin while picketing outside Ford's Kentucky truck plant after going on strike in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S. October 12, 2023. With the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike entering its 36th day and the total economic cost pegged at more than $7 billion, companies are counting the cost of lost revenue amid an uncertain economy and persistent inflation. "The damage from the strikes will last long after UAW members return to work," University of Michigan professor Erik Gordon said. Earlier this week, consultancy firm Anderson Economic Group estimated the economic losses related to supplier wages and earnings of about $2.67 billion through fourth week of the strike. An agreement remains elusive so far and shares of automakers and suppliers have fallen since the strike began on Sept. 15.

REUTERS/Cheney Orr/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 16 (Reuters) - Most Wall Street brokerages, including J.P.Morgan and Goldman Sachs, kicked off coverage on Instacart (CART.O) with a bullish view, betting on the grocery delivery app's growth amid a shift to online shopping. The stock — following a lukewarm debut in September — closed at $25.57 on Friday, below its $30 initial public offering (IPO) price. At least half of Instacart's 20 IPO underwriters have initiated coverage with their top ratings after the quiet period ended. Instacart's slow growth compared to rivals is a top concern, as a reduction in food stamp benefits and a shift back to in-store shopping could limit GTV growth, according to Piper Sandler analyst Alexander Potter. As of Friday, the six brokerages that were not involved in the IPO started coverage with an average rating of "hold", LSEG data showed.

NEW YORK, Sept 27 (Reuters) - As the Federal Reserve’s hawkish stance boosts Treasury yields and slams stocks, some investors are preparing for more pain ahead. AQR's analysis showed that trend-following hedge funds tend to outperform when rates are elevated, as they hold large cash positions that benefit from higher rates. Of course, plenty of investors believe the Fed will cut rates as soon as economic growth starts to wobble. Futures tied to the Fed’s key policy rate show investors pricing in the first rate cut in July 2024. Still, he has been holding off on adding to the firm’s holdings of small-cap consumer stocks, wary there may be more market volatility ahead as investors digest higher rates and other factors, including elevated energy prices.

The S&P 500 (.SPX) tumbled 2.9% this week, its biggest weekly decline since March. High Treasury yields dull the allure of stocks by offering investors an attractive payout on an investment seen as virtually risk free. The S&P 500 entered what has historically been its weakest 10-day stretch of the year on Sept. 18, according to BofA Global Research. Meanwhile, a drawn out government shutdown could aggravate concerns over U.S. government gridlock and send Treasury yields even higher. He noted that the S&P 500 remains above its 200-day moving average and there have been few signs of investors fleeing to safety.

As they did in June, Fed policymakers at the median still see the central bank's benchmark overnight interest rate peaking this year in the 5.50%-5.75% range, just a quarter of a percentage point above the current range. But from there, the Fed's updated quarterly projections show rates falling only half a percentage point in 2024 compared with the full percentage point of cuts anticipated at the meeting in June. Interest rate sensitive two-year Treasury yields hit 17-year highs on Wednesday after the Fed decision. "It looks as though the Fed is trying to send as hawkish a signal as it possibly can," said Gennadiny Goldberg, interest rate strategist at TD Securities. The yen was down 0.13% versus the greenback at 148.05 per dollar after the Fed decision.

The S&P 500 is up 15.7% so far this year, largely driven by a rally in a handful of mega-cap growth stocks such as Nvidia (NVDA.O) and Meta (META.O) that have ridden the artificial intelligence (AI) boom. While the rally has been moderating, BofA remains in "neutral" to "positive" territory on U.S. stocks, with a bias towards equal-weighted stocks, strategists led by Savita Subramanian said. An equal-weight index assigns uniform weights to each constituent, unlike a market capitalization-based index, like the S&P 500, where bigger companies tend to have an outsized influence. Equal-weighted stocks have less volatile earnings, smaller differences in analysts' estimates, and are cheaper and less crowded than growth stocks, Subramanian said. While a "fresh wave of bear narratives around equities have emerged", BofA says the "old economy", which includes value stocks - more prevalent in the equal-weighted S&P 500 - could benefit as much as tech and growth.
