The unemployment rate fell for Asian Americans from June to July, bucking a broader trend, according to data released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate among Asian Americans dipped to 3.7% in July from 4.1% a month earlier. The result went against the overall unemployment rate, which rose to 4.3% last month from 4.1% in June. Meanwhile, the jobless rate for white Americans rose to 3.8% in July, up from 3.5% a month earlier. For Hispanic Americans, this number climbed to 5.3% last month, compared to the rate of 4.9% in June.

Why have many Democrats embraced Kamala Harris as their presidential nominee, despite not knowing much about what she believes? We spoke to 14 Democrats as part of our latest Times Opinion focus group, and the answer was clear: Most had been deeply anxious about President Biden, and once he bowed out of the race, they needed a nominee fast. Some of the more liberal or younger participants in the group wondered if Harris is too harsh on criminal justice or on migrants crossing the border. Others don’t know what she would do about the economy — a top concern of theirs — or much else about her. For all that, most of our 14 participants felt more hopeful about Harris than Biden, whose age and inarticulateness left some thinking they would not vote this year.

The new study suggests that self-managing an abortion with abortion pills has become more common, rising from about 18% of attempts pre-Dobbs to 24% post-Dobbs. Other research has found that abortions within the formal health care system have increased in the US post-Dobbs, driven by a spike in medication abortions, especially those provided through telehealth. “As barriers to facility-based abortion grow, (self-managed abortion) may increasingly become an individual’s only or preferred option to end a pregnancy,” the researchers wrote. “These findings suggest the need to expand access to alternative models of safe and effective abortion care and ensure those seeking health care post-(self-managed abortion) do not face legal risks.”

Thousands of Black women organizers across the country are mapping out voter registration efforts and planning conference calls, campaign events and fundraisers. Harris herself has been working to reach Black women voters with stops at Black sorority conventions in recent weeks. “These are Black women values.”Harris is an alumna of Howard University, a historically Black institution. Eaddy said Black women are expecting this form of “dog whistle politics” and are prepared to defend Harris. She said she expects Black women will have a significant impact on voter turnout in November.

Mr. Vance’s stumbles have come after a remarkable two weeks when Mr. Trump survived an assassination attempt and then rallied the party — and even some skeptics — behind him. Then, in a sense, Mr. Trump and Mr. Vance became the victims of that success. Some of Mr. Vance’s comments on some conservative podcasts veered into serious policy critiques that trucked in antisemitic tropes and racial stereotypes. The Harris campaign has been able to keep the spotlight on the momentum behind her fledgling presidential run — and away from Mr. Trump. Still, the Harris campaign was happy with the bruises they had inflicted.

He also failed to obey a command while working for another sheriff’s office in Illinois and was told he needed “high stress decision making classes,” the agency’s documents reveal. Bodycam footage from another deputy showed Massey saying she rebuked Grayson, and Grayson responded by threatening the 36-year-old. In May 2022, Grayson started working at the Logan County Sheriff’s Office in Illinois, records show. Then he started working full-time with Auburn police, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, and finally the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office in May 2023. He resigned from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office in April 2023.

CNN —The five days since Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign launched at warp speed have remade the 2024 race – and given Democrats new hope of preventing a second Donald Trump presidency. Fundraising exploded, with Harris’ campaign saying she raised $126 million between Sunday afternoon and Tuesday evening. And Democrats were more eager to devote their own time to working to elect Harris: More than 100,000 people signed up to volunteer for her bid, and more than 2,000 applied for campaign jobs, Harris campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said in a Wednesday memo. The strength of Harris’ launch has at times surprised even the former Biden campaign staffers who on Sunday suddenly found themselves working for what was converted into the Harris campaign. Biden’s campaign believed his path to 270 Electoral College votes ran through the “blue wall” states – Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
