Pennsylvania State Police posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that the department was pursuing Danelo Souza Cavalcante in South Coventry Township. Cavalcante slipped out of the 8-square-mile (13-square-kilometer) search area over the weekend, stole a dairy delivery van that had been left unlocked with the keys in it. He abandoned it more than 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of the search area, after unsuccessfully seeking help at the homes of two former colleagues late Saturday, police said. Even though Cavalcante slipped through the perimeter, it won't make things easier, Caine suggested. Bivens declined to discuss whether Cavalcante has received assistance from others, but he said no such arrests have been made.

The fugitive who has eluded the authorities in Pennsylvania for nearly two weeks after breaking out of jail is now armed, having stolen a rifle from a house, officials said on Tuesday. Seeing the tracks of his prison-issued shoes at the scene of the sighting, officers followed the trail into the woods. A little after 10 p.m., Colonel Bivens said, Mr. Cavalcante saw a garage door that was open. He went inside the garage, where he found a .22 caliber rifle leaning in a corner. The owner of the house was in the garage at the time, and fired several shots at Mr. Cavalcante with a pistol, but Mr. Cavalcante escaped with the rifle.

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — Police on Saturday reported two more confirmed sightings of an escaped murderer on the run for more than a week in southeast Pennsylvania amid a search by hundreds of law enforcement officers. Danelo Souza Cavalcante, 34, escaped from the Chester County Prison while awaiting transfer to state prison on Aug. 31 after being sentenced to life for fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend in 2021. Prosecutors say he wanted to stop her from telling police that he’s wanted in a killing in his home country of Brazil. Authorities believe Cavalcante, spotted almost a dozen times since his escape, has managed to obtain clothing and other supplies. There’s now a $20,000 reward for information leading to the capture of Cavalcante, whose escape has attracted international attention and became big news in Brazil.

In a news conference on Wednesday, Howard Holland, the acting warden of the prison, described for the first time how Mr. Cavalcante escaped. The earlier escape was thwarted within minutes when a corrections officer in a watchtower saw the person fleeing and sounded the alarm. But this time, the officer in the tower, for some reason, did not see Mr. Cavalcante, whose absence was discovered by officers in his cell block nearly an hour later. Mr. Holland said the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office was investigating the escape. For many residents, Mr. Cavalcante has been an unseen presence dominating their daily lives, creating as much of an inconvenience as any sense of panic.

CNN —The manhunt for Danelo Cavalcante has expanded and two school districts have closed after the escaped murderer was spotted outside the original search area, Pennsylvania police said Tuesday. Police have now expanded the perimeter of the search area after a security camera recorded Cavalcante at Longwood Gardens on Monday evening. Police are eliminating the northern end of the previous perimeter and shifting the search area south of Route 1. Kennett Consolidated School District, which is about 9 miles from the prison, and Unionville-Chadds Ford School District, about 5 miles from the prison, both announced they will be closed Tuesday. Schools and offices are closed today and the district will operate on a Flexible Instructional Day,” Unionville-Chadds Ford School District announced.

Two school districts in Pennsylvania canceled classes on Tuesday as troopers searched by land and air for a convicted murderer who was spotted near residential areas after escaping from a prison near Philadelphia last week, the authorities said. The fugitive, Danelo Cavalcante, 34, a Brazilian national, fled from the Chester County Prison on Thursday, days after he was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder in the April 2021 killing of his former girlfriend, whom the authorities said he stabbed 38 times in front of her two children. On Tuesday, investigators said they had expanded the search for Mr. Cavalcante because of several sightings just miles from the prison in Pocopson Township, adding that a reverse 911 call had been made to residents within a three-mile radius early on Tuesday. Police cars and helicopters were also playing a message with the voice of Mr. Cavalcante’s mother urging him in his native Portuguese to surrender peacefully, the authorities said on Monday. Lt. Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police said at a news conference on Tuesday that one of the sightings of Mr. Cavalcante was probably on Monday evening, when a trail camera picked up a man walking on a property at Longwood Gardens, less than three miles south of the prison.

The US could default on its debt as soon as June 5 if the debt ceiling isn't raised by then. That would translate to "7.8 million jobs lost from peak to trough," Yaros said. Other industries would see over half a million jobs lost in this scenario, including construction. "It's something closer to the 2001 recession that we had after the dot-com bubble, and you get about 1.5 million jobs lost from peak to trough," Yaros said. And 1.5 million jobs lost — that's still a huge human toll that was unnecessarily incurred."
While many of the problems that helped trigger the upward spiral have abated, prices are still high and getting higher. The idea that companies are taking advantage of disruptions to push price increases on consumers has many names — greedflation, excuseflation, price gouging, corporate profiteering — but the gist is the same. Supply-chain issues and other disruptions made sense as drivers of higher prices, Chris Becker, a senior economist and the associate director of policy and research at the Groundwork Collaborative, told me. "Working people are suffering thanks to corporate greed, so we need to enact tougher rules to ensure corporations pay a price when they price gouge." However, the jobless rate isn’t expected to be that low for long. While that’s a small improvement from the central bank’s previous 4.6% jobless rate estimate, economists say it’s possible the unemployment rate could rise above the Fed’s expectations. It can be difficult to slow an unemployment spiralEconomists say it’s hard to guess the trajectory of the unemployment rate this year, noting it could very well exceed the Fed’s estimate. As such, the Fed’s tightening efforts could easily drive the Black unemployment rate much higher than the overall jobless rate, said William Spriggs, an economics professor at Howard University and chief economist to the AFL-CIO. The Black unemployment rate will easily get to 9% in that scenario.”One other likely consequence of growing unemployment is slowing wage growth, Bivens said.
Overall, the budget would increase federal spending in the twelve months starting in October to $6.8 trillion from the $6.2 trillion expected to be spent in the current fiscal year. Biden's budget proposal faces stiff opposition from Republican lawmakers emboldened by winning control of the House of Representatives in November's midterm elections. Biden, asked for areas of possible compromise with Republicans, told reporters at the White House: "We'll see what their budget is." Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget advocacy group, said the budget did not go nearly far enough to rein in dangerous debt levels. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a non-partisan Washington think tank, said Biden deserved credit for for putting forward $3 trillion in deficit reduction.
But the economy may be fine with higher inflation. The 2% inflation target has been repeated so often by Fed officials and central bankers worldwide that it seems absolutely crucial to a healthy economy. But "the 2% inflation target, it's relatively arbitrary," said Josh Bivens, director of research at the Economic Policy Institute. In 1991, Canada announced its inflation target; the United Kingdom followed a year later. But if the 2% target is arbitrary, it implies that the economy could function normally at a higher level of inflation.

On paper, the average hourly wage Americans have earned has steadily climbed over the past year, from $30.76 to $32.36. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans have effectively experienced a 12-month pay cut of $0.31 per hour. Combined with a decrease in hours worked, Americans' inflation adjusted average weekly pay has decreased by only $13.20 from one year ago. The BLS released data Tuesday showing that monthly inflation had picked up 0.1%, while annualized inflation had climbed 8.3%. "Clearly the high inflation is undermining Americans’ purchasing power," Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's, told NBC News.
