CHICAGO, March 7 (Reuters) - A U.S. federal lawsuit to block JetBlue Airways Corp's (JBLU.O) purchase of Spirit Airlines (SAVE.N) has raised hurdles for future airline deals, making it harder for companies to pursue growth and manage costs. Mergers and acquisitions are a time-honored way for companies to both boost revenue and profit through cost cutting. But the DOJ lawsuit could send a chill through airline boardrooms, said Addison Schonland, partner at consulting firm AirInsight. American Airlines (AAL.O), United Airlines (UAL.O), Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) and Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) control 80% of the domestic market. The lawsuit against the JetBlue-Spirit deal was widely expected because of the Biden administration's crackdown on large deals between publicly listed companies, analysts said.
The complaint, which was filed in Boston federal court, said that JetBlue planned to remove 10% to 15% of seats from every Spirit plane. "Fewer seats means fewer passengers - and higher prices for those who can still afford to make their way onto the plane. Spirit shares were up about 1.8% on Tuesday after dipping the previous day on expectations of a lawsuit. JetBlue had previously said it expected the deal to close in early 2024, leaving time for litigation if necessary. JetBlue prevailed in a months-long bidding war for Spirit Airlines after the ultra-low-cost carrier accepted its offer in late July.
WASHINGTON, March 7 (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit on Tuesday to stop JetBlue Airways (JBLU.O) from buying Spirit Airlines <SAVE.N>, saying that the planned merger "would put travel out of reach for many cost-conscious travelers." The complaint, which was filed in Boston federal court, said that JetBlue planned to remove 10% to 15% of seats from every Spirit plane. This is unlikely to stop business travelers flying on corporate expense accounts, but would put travel out of reach for many cost-conscious travelers," the complaint said. JetBlue had previously said it expected the deal to close in early 2024, leaving time for litigation if necessary. JetBlue prevailed in a months-long bidding war for Spirit Airlines after the ultra-low-cost carrier accepted its offer in late July.
Rolls-Royce strategy bind is a problem best shared

That’s way better than the 1.5 billion pound cash outflow in 2021, but also four times what analysts had expected. Even so Rolls, which makes 45% of its revenue from making, selling and servicing commercial aircraft engines, is on the wrong side of the energy transition. But reaching net zero emissions by 2050 may involve ditching gas turbines entirely. One solution could come from hydrogen-powered fuel cell engines - Rolls clinched a partnership with easyJet (EZJ.L) in July to carry out a joint project to test a hydrogen engine. Rolls-Royce’s plans to reach net zero emissions by 2050 date back to 2021.
PREVIEWDave Edwards, the chief executive at Greenville-Spartanburg, said just over a decade ago his airport had no international air cargo operations. BMW today accounts for about a quarter of Greenville-Spartanburg’s roughly 15 international cargo flights a week. Air cargo volumes fell through most of last year as manufacturers and retailers pulled back on orders because of slowing consumer spending. Rockford, about 70 miles from Chicago O’Hare International Airport, has become one of the most successful regional airports for cargo. It is a hub for United Parcel Service Inc. and has attracted air operations for companies including Amazon.com Inc., DSV and A.P.
Delta Air Lines is a solid pick in the air travel industry, according to Goldman Sachs. The firm resumed coverage of the air carrier with a buy rating and 12-month price target of $40. Recovering end-market exposure One of the reasons for Goldman's positive rating is that Delta is still seeing recovery in certain end markets post-pandemic. In 2023, she expects corporate and international travel to continue to improve as restrictions drop in major markets such as the U.S. and UK midyear. Lastly, Delta has a stronger balance sheet than the industry overall, especially compared to its big airline peers.
The "agreement-in-principle," seen by Reuters, still requires final approval by the Air Line Pilots Association and its members before being implemented. In October, Delta pilots represented by the Air Line Pilots Association voted overwhelmingly to strike. According to CNBC, the new draft agreement could help drive up pilots' pay across the industry. The Air Line Pilots Association said in a memo seen by Reuters that the proposed deal represents more than $7.2 billion of cumulative value increases over the next four years. The Air Line Pilots Association did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.
"The engines that we make go on private jets," he said. "We have a big airplane so we can take that engine up in the air and expose it to all the elements and the environment that is up there." Where Honeywell engineers sit to monitor and collect data during test flights. Thomas Pallini/Insider
In this article JBLUSAVEPassengers wait in line at the Spirit Airlines check-in counter at Orlando International Airport. This is the first time anyone wanted Spirit Airlines," quipped "The Late Show" host Stephen Colbert about the deal on Thursday. As the two distinct airlines push ahead with their plans to combine, here's what passengers can expect:What are JetBlue's plans for Spirit? Afterward, passengers might be confused if they're flying in Spirit planes that haven't been retrofitted yet. Frontier Airlines, meanwhile, is already saying it's happy to take on a bigger share of the ultra-low-cost market after its Spirit deal fell apart.
