The 1980 Mercedes was previously owned by famed actress Lauren Bacall, for instance, and one of the watches belonged to Giuliani's grandfather. Another watch was gifted to Giuliani by the president of France after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when Giuliani was mayor of New York City. Giuliani repeatedly targeted the two women with false election fraud claims as part of his efforts to overturn Trump's loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Giuliani filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition to shield himself from sudden financial ruin, but a New York federal bankruptcy judge dismissed his case. Attorneys for Freeman and Moss had noted in a previous court filing that, "Before filing for bankruptcy, Mr. Giuliani had listed the New York Apartment for $5.7 million."

The latter appeared to hint at the Germany's waning influence over regional policy — a likely unthinkable notion only a few years ago. Solid-state batteries have long been billed as the "holy grail" of sustainable driving. As the name suggests, solid-state batteries contain a solid electrolyte, made from materials such as ceramics. Automakers have invested billions of dollars in solid-state battery research and teamed up with developers to produce their own versions for mass production. Tomohiro Ohsumi | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesJapan's Toyota, for instance, has said it is aiming to bring solid-state batteries into mass production between 2027 and 2028. Yet, despite growing hype over the potential rollout of solid-state batteries, analysts remain skeptical about when they will actually make it to market.

BMW CEO Oliver Zipse says a 2035 gasoline ban will hit the European auto industry. Zipse's warnings come amid fears in the auto industry of a Darwinistic price war with China. AdvertisementA "correction" of the planned 2035 gasoline vehicle ban, Zipse said, would help reduce European OEMs' reliance on China for batteries. This, Tavares said, is because automakers will have to continue to invest in both electric and gasoline vehicles, thus incurring higher costs. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius told attendees at the Berlin Global Dialogue conference on October 2 that the Western auto industry is fighting a "Darwinistic-like price war" with their Chinese rivals.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius says automakers need to hunker down if they want to beat the Chinese. Ford's CEO, meanwhile, called the Chinese auto industry an "existential threat" after a visit to the country in May. When it comes to competing in the EV market, Western automakers have been left playing a game of catch-up with the Chinese. Chinese automakers like BYD have been expanding into Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, as well as developing markets like Brazil and Mexico. Sam's Club and Costco have roughly the same number of U.S. clubs, but Costco pulls in about twice as much annual revenue. Europe is clamping down on Chinese electric cars. European automakers are facing plunging EV sales and pressure over looming emissions targets. AdvertisementEurope is clamping down on Chinese electric cars — but the move to protect the continent's automakers could create a new problem for the likes of Volkswagen and BMW. The European tariffs come after the US introduced its own trade restrictions against Chinese EVs earlier this year.

A VW Golf GTI stands in a parking lot within sight of the brand tower on the grounds of the VW plant in Wolfsburg, Germany. Volkswagen cut its annual outlook for the second time in less than three months on Friday, citing a weaker-than-expected performance at its passenger car division as pressure on Europe's top automaker continues to rise. The lowered outlook is the latest from Germany's car giants, with Mercedes-Benz and BMW both downgrading their annual forecasts earlier this month as a result of weakening demand in China, the world's biggest car market. Volkswagen said it was cutting its outlook "in light of a challenging market environment and developments that have fallen short of original expectations, particularly at the brands Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Tech. Porsche, the holding company of the Porsche and Piech families that holds most of the voting rights in Volkswagen and is the carmaker's single biggest shareholder, also cut its own outlook in the wake of Volkswagen's downgrade.

"These statements are patently false because customers cannot shop for Aerie products on Amazon." The Swedish automaker said it now aims for between 90% and 100% of its car sales to be fully electric or plug-in hybrid models by 2030. The U.K., for instance, introduced a mandate that requires 22% of new car sales this year to be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). BMW trimmed its profitability guidance for 2024 on Tuesday, pointing to technical problems that led to delivery stops for cars as well as persistently sluggish demand in the key Chinese market. The German carmaker said it expects its margin of earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) to be between 6% and 7% for 2024, having previously guided for a figure between 8% and 10%. In a statement, Continental said that only a "small proportion" of the braking systems it produces and supplies to BMW will be partially replaced because of an electronic component that may be impaired. The company also forecasts a slight decrease in deliveries, it said, without providing a specific figure, after having previously expected an increase. The technical actions related to the integrated braking systems impact over 1.5 million vehicles and will result in additional warranty costs in a high three-digit million amount in the third quarter, the company added.

The firm said its long-term aim remains to become a fully electric carmaker. The target replaces a 2021 pledge for Volvo Cars' lineup to be fully electric by the end of the decade.
