"As we strive for peace, Gaza and the West Bank should be reunited under a single governance structure, ultimately under a revitalized Palestinian Authority, as we all work toward a two-state solution," Biden said in an opinion article in the Washington Post. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took issue with Biden's plan for the Palestinian Authority to govern Gaza. The Palestinian Authority used to run both the West Bank and Gaza but was ousted from the latter in 2007 after a brief civil war with Hamas. Biden also said the United States is prepared to issue visa bans against "extremists" attacking civilians in the West Bank.

(Reuters) - Steve Scalise, who had secured the Republican Party's nomination to be the next speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives but was short of the 217 votes needed to be elected on the House floor, has dropped out of the race, he said on Thursday. "I just shared with my colleagues that I was withdrawing my name as a candidate that our speaker designee," he told reporters. Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives spent hours in closed-door talks on Thursday but failed to resolve divisions that have prevented them from installing Scalise as speaker of the chamber, which has been leaderless for nine days. Scalise, the No.2 House Republican, had secured his party's nomination to replace ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Republicans can afford no more than four defections as they control the House by a narrow 221-212 margin.

The false reports made it appear as if Santos' campaign had raised at least $250,000 from outside donors in a single quarter, the threshold to qualify for financial and logistical support from the Republican Party, prosecutors said. Marks pleaded guilty last week to a conspiracy charge. Tom Suozzi, a Democrat who previously held Santos' seat, said on Tuesday he would run in next year's election.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke on Monday with Niger's President Mohamed Bazoum, who was ousted in a military coup in July, to reiterate Washington's support for the African country's democratically elected government, the State Department said in a statement. Blinken told Bazoum that a civilian-led government "presents the best opportunity to ensure that Niger remains a strong partner in security and development in the region," the statement said. Soldiers from the presidential guard detained Bazoum on July 26 and have set up a transitional government, one of a series of recent coups in West Africa's Sahel region.
