CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris turns 60 on Sunday – and, her campaign wants voters to know, that makes her 18 years younger than Donald Trump. Harris’ campaign is increasingly questioning the former president’s mental and physical fitness in the final weeks of the 2024 presidential race. “He’s becoming increasingly unstable and unhinged, and it requires that response,” Harris told reporters Saturday in Detroit. Top Harris allies have also leaned into the strategy of casting Trump as old and mentally unfit in recent days. “He’s talking about Hannibal Lecter, he’s talking about this, he’s talking about that.”Trump, at times, seems to tie migrants who seek asylum in the United States to the character of Lecter being detained at an insane asylum.

In this 2004 photo, then-District Attorney Kamala Harris waits for a proceeding to convene in San Francisco. The long-standing problem of racial inequities in the criminal justice system is among the issues that prompted Harris to become a prosecutor in the first place. “I grew up knowing about the disparities, inequities, and unfairness in the criminal justice system,” Harris said during a 2019 town hall hosted by MSNBC. And I am proud of the work that I did.”As a prosecutor, Harris adopted what she called a “smart on crime” approach to law enforcement. Her cautious stance on the issue frustrated many advocates of criminal justice reform, including those who expressed support for Harris on other issues.

Biden has grown frustrated that Netanyahu appears to brush off his advice and recommendations, and to publicly reject his attempts at lowering regional temperatures. Biden last week made clear he expected to speak with Netanyahu ahead of any potential reprisal against Iran for its missile onslaught. Still, she acknowledged the significance of the conversation, the first between Biden and Netanyahu since August 21. Still, Biden was insistent that he speak to Netanyahu ahead of Israel’s next steps, believing it important to convey his views directly. The White House, which has declined to comment on those reports, has insisted the two men maintain a functional relationship.

In a fact-bending blast of disinformation, the former president is charging Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden’s White House of the very transgressions of which he stands accused. This is false, but Trump, while president, did repurpose FEMA funds to help finance his hardline immigration policies. But in retrospect, the charade featuring his first White House press secretary Sean Spicer was a harbinger of an administration that bucked fact as an instrument of political power. Trump voters respond to his populism and his evisceration of elites and many sincerely believe he’s a response to a march to the left by the Democratic Party. Both Trump and Harris, who are deadlocked in the polls, are chasing voters who may not habitually follow politics.

Jimmy Carter has accomplished something no other former U.S. president has — he notched a 100th birthday. Carter, who served one term in the White House, hit the milestone Tuesday at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he has been receiving hospice care for the last 19 months. “I’m only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris,” Carter said, his grandson, Jason Carter, told The Atlanta Constitution. Vice presidential nominees traditionally play the role of attack dog for the top of their tickets – in this case, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump. Walz earned the Democratic vice presidential nod in part because of his branding of the GOP ticket as “weird” in television interviews that served as semi-auditions for the role. Vance and Trump, meanwhile, have at times struggled to get on the same page on the issue of abortion. Walz could play the part Biden once did in a debate against another rising young conservative, when the then-vice president stymied Mitt Romney’s running mate, Paul Ryan in a crucial 2012 debate. When Trump brought up Springfield during the presidential debate last month, the moderators fact-checked him in real-time.

Instead of cutting anything out, consider focusing on these seven commandments of the Mediterranean lifestyle, Karadsheh recommends. The pharmaceutical executive who was once New York City’s Covid czar was fired Monday, days after he admitted participating in “private gatherings” that were prohibited during the height of the pandemic, a federal filing shows. Varma was the company’s executive vice president and chief medical officer, the filing says. Varma acknowledged the prohibited gatherings after a conservative podcaster posted video last week of what appeared to be hidden camera recordings that showed Varma describing them. Varma's spokesman previously said that he was a part-time City Hall consultant at the time and that all participants were vaccinated. “I served in City Hall between April 2020 — May 2021,” Varma said in the statement.

New York City’s former Covid czar has admitted to participating in what he called “private gatherings” attended by multiple people while the rest of the city was on lockdown and large get-togethers were prohibited during the pandemic. “I served in City Hall between April 2020 — May 2021,” Varma said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Chris Vlasto. He became a national figure when Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving was barred from playing basketball in New York City because he refused to get vaccinated. At the time, New York state had increased the limit on outdoor social gatherings from 200 to 500 people. In the apparently heavily edited video, Varma appeared to recognize the hypocrisy of telling New Yorkers to isolate while he was partying with large groups of people.

Although the false claims about Haitian immigrants abusing animals have been widely discredited, Trump and Vance have doubled down since the debate. Half a dozen interviews later, her media strategy is taking shape, even if viewers in New York and Washington might not be seeing it. In recent days, Harris has granted sit-downs to local media outlets and fielded questions in unconventional forums to target crucial swing state and minority voters. Earlier this week, Harris parried tough questions from the National Association of Black Journalists and taped an appearance with Stephanie “Chiquibaby” Himonidis, a popular Spanish-language radio host and podcaster. Trump’s media strategy is looser – he appears on his favorite Fox shows, gives statements and brief interviews to beat reporters, and holds occasional press conferences. In addition to viewers watching online, Winfrey will invite 400 local voters to join her for the conversation in-person, focusing particularly on voters in battleground states as the election approaches.

CNN —There’s no political playbook for how to deal with another apparent assassination attempt against a major-party presidential candidate within weeks of an election. The second apparent assassination attempt comes against the backdrop of a turbulent campaign that has defied convention and predictions. Another apparent attempt on his life is likely to have some level of personal impact on the former president. In normal circumstances, an apparent assassination attempt against a presidential candidate might be expected to unleash a surge of sympathy that could translate into a political boost. But it’s too early to say whether the second apparent assassination attempt will have greater political impact than the first.

The Trump campaign and its allies have spent more than $38 million replaying that soundbite almost 70,000 times in campaign advertisements since Harris became the Democratic nominee, looking to capitalize on persistent voter concerns about the economy and blunt Harris’ turn-the-page messaging by yoking her to President Joe Biden’s record. “Everyday prices are too high – food, rent, gas, back-to-school clothes,” Harris says in the clip featured in the ad. Last week, Harris’ campaign launched a series of ads on her economic pitch, specifically tailored to key swing states. In addition, her campaign has spent more than $10 million airing an ad in which Harris says, “You want lower prices and lower taxes. I believe you want to just not get by, but you want to get ahead,” before delivering her pitch for an “opportunity economy.”And another top Harris ad contrasts her approach with Trump’s.
