When Donald J. Trump first ran for the White House in 2016, his closing campaign advertisement lamented the influence of Wall Street in Washington, flashing ominous images of big banks and the billionaire liberal philanthropist George Soros. Now, as president-elect, Mr. Trump has tapped two denizens of Wall Street to run his economic agenda. Mr. Trump’s choices to lead his economic team show the prominence of billionaire investors in setting an agenda that is supposed to fuel a “blue-collar boom” but that skeptics think will mostly benefit the rich. As Mr. Trump prepares to assume the presidency in January, business owners and investors are closely attuned to which of his economic promises he will ultimately follow through on. The selections of Mr. Bessent and Mr. Lutnick cement a hold by Wall Street executives over the two most important economic posts in any administration.

A man walks past the People's Bank of China (PBOC) building on July 20, 2023 in Beijing, China. The People's Bank of China kept the medium-term lending facility rate unchanged at 2.0% on 900 billion yuan ($124.26 billion) worth of one-year loans to some financial institutions, according to the bank's official statement. Keeping the MLF rate intact allows for "greater policy maneuverability" given the change in U.S. administration, at a time when commercial banks' net-interest-margins have remained tight, Pang added. "A delayed reduction in the [MLF] lending rates" would also bolster the yuan against the stronger greenback, JLL's Pang added. Unlike the Fed's focus on a main interest rate, the PBOC uses a variety of rates to manage monetary policy.

The words “private equity” are almost poetic in their power to obfuscate in such a way that most people simply tune out when they hear them. But there’s a reason workers tend to have a negative association with private equity. Per Bloomberg, Apollo “built its name as the scrappiest private equity and distressed-debt investor on Wall Street by buying businesses and loading them up with debt that offered creditors meager protections in the face of default.”Historically, private equity deals were largely handled by big banks. Private equity firms now hold controlling stakes across an array of industries, including supermarkets, housing, health care, fashion, restaurants and vet clinics. And other efforts to force more transparency and accountability in private equity have similarly faced opposition.

London CNN —The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla held in May last year cost British taxpayers £72 million ($91 million), an amount some have labeled excessive. The £72 million spent on the coronation could have paid for 24 million free meals for schoolchildren in London, based on the city government’s current budget of £3.00 ($3.75) per meal. Some additional spending came from the Privy Purse, the monarch’s private source of income, a royal source told CNN. “Plans (for the coronation) were scaled back,” the royal source told CNN. The culture department, in its accounts, said it had underspent its budget on the coronation by £2.8 million ($3.5 million).

High-Yield Savings Accounts Are Still a Good Deal
  + stars: | 2024-11-22 | by ( Ann Carrns | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
You’ve probably been discouraged to see the interest rate on your high-yield savings account fall during the past couple of months. But your money is still earning much more than it would in a traditional savings account — and more than inflation. Rates paid on cash in savings accounts have been dropping since the Federal Reserve began cutting its key interest rate in September as inflation cooled. Even so, the rates paid on federally insured high-yield savings accounts, many offered by banks that operate solely or mostly online, are still beating inflation, which was 2.6 percent on an annual basis in October. “High-yield savings accounts are still attractive relative to traditional savings accounts,” particularly for emergency or “rainy day” funds that savers want to be able to tap into quickly, said Alan Bazaar, chief executive and co-chief investment officer at Hollow Brook Wealth Management in Katonah, N.Y.

Four big reasons to own gold into 2025

On Friday, spot gold rose about 1% amid increasing tensions between Russia and Ukraine . Secondly, the global interest rate-cutting cycle will also stretch into 2025, which will serve as another driver of higher gold prices. Moreover, a push among central banks to diversify their reserves away from the dollar could also provide some additional support for gold, he said. "We expect the de-dollarization trend among central banks and private asset managers to continue," Khandelwal said. "We estimate central banks bought around 900 metric tons of gold in 2024, and these volumes can be sustained well above the prior decade's average of around 325 metric tons a year."

It is very unusual for Chinese businesspeople to take public aim at the government and those who have done so have often faced repercussions. In particular, Pinduoduo’s pricing system has done great harm to China’s brands and its industries,” he was quoted as saying by state-owned media outlet The Paper. In further remarks from the same press conference that were not widely reported by state media, Zhong singled out the Chinese government for not doing more to stop the trend. Morris, like thousands of other customers, was snared in the collapse of a behind-the-scenes fintech firm called Synapse and has been locked out of her account for six months as of November. Then she learned how much Evolve Bank & Trust, the lender where her funds were supposed to be held, was prepared to return to her. The crisis started in May when a dispute between Synapse and Evolve Bank over customer balances boiled over and the fintech middleman turned off access to a key system used to process transactions. Synapse helped fintech startups like Yotta and Juno, which are not banks, offer checking accounts and debit cards by hooking them up with small lenders like Evolve. But that would've required more coordination between Evolve and the other lenders that held customer funds than what ultimately happened.

That would include payments services from Apple, Google and Amazon, as well as fintech firms including PayPal and Block and peer-to-peer services Venmo and Zelle. While the CFPB already had some authority over digital payment companies because of its oversight of electronic fund transfers, the new rule allows it to treat tech companies more like banks. “Digital payments have gone from novelty to necessity and our oversight must reflect this reality,” said CFPB Director Rohit Chopra. Former billionaire investor Sung Kook “Bill” Hwang was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Wednesday over the collapse of Archegos Capital Management, which cost Wall Street banks more than $10 billion. Hwang was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan, where a jury convicted Hwang in July on 10 criminal charges including wire fraud, securities fraud and market manipulation. Before sentencing Hwang, Hellerstein asked the defendant’s lawyer, Dani James, how she thought Hwang compared to Sam Bankman-Fried, who was sentenced in March to 25 years in prison for stealing $8 billion from users of the now-bankrupt FTX exchange. While Archegos eventually managed $36 billion, Hwang’s borrowing helped him amass $160 billion of exposure to stocks.
