Sports Team: UK band robbed at gunpoint in California
  + stars: | 2024-12-04 | by ( Lianne Kolirin | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —British indie band Sports Team have been robbed at gunpoint at the very start of a tour of the United States. The post includes a short clip that shows their white van being broken into and somebody shouting to “get down” and “get inside” the Starbucks where the band members had stopped. The band have had two top 10 UK albums and their debut album, “Deep Down Happy,” was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2020. The band’s lead guitarist, Henry Young, is a former CNN sports writer who was based at the network’s London bureau. But when they were offered the chance to support Spanish band Hinds on a five-week European tour, Young said it had been a “now or never moment” that forced him to act.

5 Minutes That Will Make You Love Brazilian Jazz
  + stars: | 2024-12-04 | by ( Marcus J. Moore | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
When the term “Brazilian jazz” arises, one might think of bossa nova, or Sergio Mendes (its most popular purveyor), and stop there. But there’s a world beyond those sunny instrumentals and bright vocals, where artists like Hermeto Pascoal, João Donato and Leny Andrade show that Brazilian jazz can be funky, soulful and esoteric. The origins of Brazilian jazz are often traced to the late 1950s, to the advent of bossa nova by the composers Donato and Antônio Carlos Jobim. Thanks to the contributors below, a mix of musicians, writers and scholars, we get to hear Brazilian jazz beyond the gravitational pull of bossa nova and samba, from its height in the ’60s to the present day. Traces of bossa nova and samba emerge, but these selections also take fusion, ambient and psychedelia into account.

Also in an interview this fall, Robert Smith, the lead vocalist and guitarist for the Cure, said dynamic pricing is "driven by greed," calling the practice a "scam." However, with so many recent high-profile tours, "for sure, dynamic pricing has surged to the forefront of concert goers' attention," he said. Throughout the 21st century, revenue from recorded music has gone down while revenue from live music events has gone up. In 2011, Ticketmaster first introduced an early version of dynamic ticket pricing, which is now the standard for live music ticketing sales. "The live music industry is constantly leaving money on the table that fans would pay.

An Oklahoma-based cleaning company has been fined nearly $172,000 after federal investigators found that it had hired nearly a dozen children to work dangerous overnight shifts at an Iowa slaughterhouse. The 11 children were hired by Qvest Sanitation of Guymon, Okla., to work at a pork processing plant in Sioux City, Iowa, operated by Seaboard Triumph Foods, the Labor Department said. The children used corrosive cleaners to wash equipment, including head splitters, jaw pullers, band saws and neck clippers, the department said last week. The department did not say how old the children were when they were working in the plant. Adam Greer, Qvest’s vice president of operations, said in a statement that the company had not been able to confirm the allegations because the Labor Department “has declined to provide us with any names or specific information related to the alleged violations.”“In spite of this, Qvest has not only fully cooperated with the Department of Labor but is and has been committed to strengthening our onboarding process,” he said.

“Y.M.C.A.” singer and co-writer Victor Willis of the band Village People defended President-elect Donald Trump’s use of the song Monday on Facebook. Willis denied that the disco tune was intended as a “gay anthem,” saying he “knew nothing about the Y being a hang out for gays” when he wrote the lyrics. Willis said he wrote “Y.M.C.A.” based on what he knew about the worldwide youth organization at the time, particularly the YMCA branches in the urban areas of San Francisco. Willis said he has received more than 1,000 complaints about the use of “Y.M.C.A” at Trump’s campaign rallies. Data suggests the staple campaign moment drove the song up the charts, with search interest and listenership soaring on Election Day.

As June’s Pride Month festivities were nearing a conclusion, Tractor Supply released a statement that put LGBTQ+ rights proponents on alert. With that move, Tractor Supply became the first domino to fall as companies began pulling out of the Corporate Equality Index. For Tractor Supply and some others, it marked a staunch turn in policy. For former Tractor Supply customer Ashe Taylor-Austin, the retailer’s announcement pushed them to look elsewhere when purchasing supplies for their horse. “When we got the news about Tractor Supply, I immediately started shopping around,” said Taylor-Austin, who switched to buying from a small business.

Recession fears have largely dissipated since this summer, bolstering investor confidence in a roaring stock market. Edwards said rising yields will eventually put a damper on the stock market, especially with valuations continuing to climb. Lai Ching-te, the Taiwanese president, is scheduled to visit the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu and Palau, which amount to one-quarter of the dozen states that maintain diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Beijing claims the self-governed island of Taiwan as its territory, and insists that governments end diplomatic relations with Taipei if they want full relations with China. But Mr. Trump’s proposed cabinet includes Republicans who have been deeply distrustful of China and sympathetic to Taiwan. Their total population is about 67,000, according to United Nations estimates, compared with Taiwan’s more than 23 million people. But they are members of the United Nations and its bodies, while Taiwan is generally excluded.

That would mark the currency's weakest level on record, according to LSEG data going back to 2004. Trump had already pledged 60% or higher tariffs on Chinese goods during his election campaign. The PBOC has been supporting the value of onshore yuan by capping the daily reference rate at 7.20 on the dollar this year.

He built a successful investment firm by supporting successful young businesses like Staples. But as Noah Millman writes on Substack, people in the MAGA movement take a different view of Romney. Millman’s underlying point is it’s not sufficient to say that Trump is leading a band of morally challenged people to power. The people I regard as upright and admirable MAGA regards as morally disgraceful, and the people I regard as corrupt and selfish MAGA regards as heroic. The crucial distinction is that some of us have an institutional mind-set while the MAGA mind-set is anti-institutional.
