Abuja, Nigeria CNN —A Nigerian senator, his wife and a doctor were on Friday jailed in the UK over an organ harvesting plot, Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said in a statement. Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice and Dr. Obinna Obeta were sentenced at the UK’s Old Bailey court to nine years and eight months, four years and six months, and 10 years in prison respectively. Some of the country’s political class wrote to the UK court appealing for leniency ahead of his sentencing, including Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Ekweremadu served as speaker of the ECOWAS parliament between 2011 and 2015. But the calls for clemency failed to hold sway over the UK court and some in Nigeria questioned why high profile politicians were using their influence to advocate for a convicted criminal.
Abuja, Nigeria CNN —Nigerian MP Ike Ekweremadu will be sentenced in the UK Friday after being found guilty of an organ harvesting plot, but fellow lawmakers in his country have joined growing calls for leniency in his case. Many of the country’s political class have written to the UK courts appealing for leniency during his sentencing, including Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo. … The conviction has already been done but we are seeking clemency because this is the first time our colleague is getting involved in this kind of thing,” Lawan said. Ekweremadu served as speaker of the ECOWAS parliament between 2011 and 2015. But the calls for clemency are unlikely to hold any sway over the UK court and some in Nigeria have raised eyebrows that high profile politicians are using their influence to advocate for a convicted criminal.
LONDON, March 23 (Reuters) - A wealthy Nigerian politician and his wife were convicted on Thursday of trafficking a street trader from Lagos to Britain to illegally harvest his kidney for a transplant for their seriously-ill daughter. "This was an horrific plot to exploit a vulnerable victim by trafficking him to the UK for the purpose of transplanting his kidney," said Joanne Jakymec, Chief Crown Prosecutor. Sonia Ekweremadu, the intended recipient of the organ who has a serious and deteriorating kidney condition and requires dialysis, was found not guilty of any part in the plan. Donating a kidney is not unlawful in Britain but it is a criminal offence to offer a reward, regardless of whether the donor is complicit. Police said the guilty verdicts marked the first time someone had been convicted in Britain of human trafficking for the purpose of organ harvesting.

The crash led to a diplomatic spat between London and Washington, with the British government backing the call for Sacoolas to be prosecuted. After agreeing to appear in a British court remotely, she pleaded guilty in October to causing death by dangerous driving. Sacoolas' lawyer Ben Cooper said she had not personally asked for diplomatic immunity and that her departure from Britain afterwards was "a decision taken by her government". They expressed fury that the U.S. government had told Sacoolas not to attend her sentencing in person. "We have learnt important lessons from this tragic incident, including improvements to the process around exemptions from diplomatic immunity," he said in a statement.
Sacoolas, whose husband worked as a U.S. intelligence officer at the base, left Britain shortly after the accident, claiming diplomatic immunity from criminal prosecution and the United States refused to extradite her. In October, appearing at London's Old Bailey court by videolink from the United States, Sacoolas denied causing death by dangerous driving but admitted the less serious charge. The judge had previously directed that she attend the sentencing, due to take place on Thursday, in person. The Old Bailey said in a statement on Tuesday that an application for Sacoolas to take part and be sentenced via videolink had been renewed. The crash led to a diplomatic spat between London and Washington, with the British government backing the call for Sacoolas to be prosecuted.
LONDON, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey criticised a plan being considered by Britain's government to give itself veto powers over post-Brexit financial rules written by independent watchdogs, including the British central bank. "Part of competitiveness is having an effective legal system, and part of it is having an effective regulatory system ... We must not threaten that," Bailey told the Treasury Committee in Britain's parliament on Wednesday. Bailey said the proposal might complicate Britain's attempts to restore its reputation internationally after the recent turmoil in financial markets caused by the short-lived economic programme of former prime minister Liz Truss. "We have damaged our reputation internationally ... it will take longer to rebuild that reputation that it will do to correct the gilt curve," he said. BoE's Bailey confirms decrease in bond purchase cap

REUTERS/Hannah McKayLONDON, Nov 4 (Reuters) - Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said on Friday that the maximum size of the BoE's Asset Purchase Facility holdings can now be lowered to 886 billion pounds from 966 billion pounds, after the conclusion of emergency purchases last month. The BoE bought 19 billion pounds of long-dated and index-linked government bonds last month to halt a fire sale of assets by pension funds following former prime minister Liz Truss's mini-budget. Britain's finance ministry - which indemnifies the BoE against losses on its bond portfolio - approved a 100 billion pounds increase in the maximum size of the APF to 966 billion pounds, in case greater purchases were needed. Bailey, in a letter to finance minister Jeremy Hunt on Friday, said this could now be lowered to 80 billion pounds and would fall further as the BoE unwound its quantitative easing purchases. The BoE also aimed to sell the 19 billion pounds of long-dated and index-linked gilts in a "timely but orderly" way, Bailey wrote.

The Bank's Financial Stability Committee on Sep. 28 announced a two-week emergency purchase program for long-dated U.K. government bonds. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesLONDON — The Bank of England's emergency bond-buying program draws to a close on Friday, with traders remaining on edge as volatility in the U.K. bond market looks set to continue. The central bank initially announced the two-week intervention in the long-dated bond market on Sep. 28, having been informed that a number of liability driven investment (LDI) funds — held by pension plans — were hours from collapse as U.K. government bond prices plunged. The BOE's Pill also highlighted that recent actions taken to ensure orderly market function and financial stability sought to preserve the effectiveness of monetary policy, but should not be considered monetary policy actions in themselves. Chris Lupoli, U.K. rates and inflation strategist at BNP Paribas , told CNBC Thursday that the Bank of England remained focused on the temporary purchases serving as a "backstop."

Bailey outburst blunts BoE crisis-fighting tools

LONDON, Oct 12 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Andrew Bailey is in danger of blunting the Bank of England’s crisis tools. The UK central bank governor on Tuesday vowed to end emergency bond-buying that has been propping up pension funds, even as investors increasingly assumed the scheme might get extended. Indeed, 30-year bond yields have risen further on Wednesday. Lastly, if Bailey is indeed forced to U-turn by extending the programme, he will have damaged the bank’s credibility. The BoE announced a 65 billion pound government bond purchase scheme on Sept. 28 to help indebted pension funds facing margin calls avoid being forced to sell gilts.

Pension fund blowup faces brutal second act

The Bank of England announced a 65 billion pound gilt-buying scheme to stabilise markets and rescue pension funds. Bailey’s move may have been too late to stop some pension funds from having to close out their hedges, like interest rate swaps or futures. The rate at which retirement payments are discounted will also fall, pushing up the pension fund’s future liabilities, but without a corresponding asset gain. Meanwhile, investors like Goldman Sachs are hoovering up cut-price stakes in private equity vehicles, which LDI funds are selling. They also held 78 billion pounds and 317 billion pounds in property and equities respectively.
The Banker and Bailey Circus
  + stars: | 2022-09-29 | by ( The Editorial Board | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The Bank of England’s decision Wednesday to buy British bonds is being portrayed as a rebuke to new Prime Minister Liz Truss ’s economic program, and BOE Governor Andrew Bailey may have meant it to be. The intervention calmed bond and equity markets, at least for now, though at the cost of showing again that central bankers are easily spooked into rescue mode. Investors are cheering their success in coaxing the Bank of England back into the market to underwrite bond prices. On Monday the BOE issued a statement saying it would evaluate market movements “at its next scheduled meeting,” which is in November. Two days later it had forgotten all that and said it would “carry out temporary purchases” of longer-term gilts “to restore orderly market conditions.”
The fallout makes it even harder for Governor Andrew Bailey to convince markets he can tighten monetary policy. His decision on Wednesday to buy UK government debt and delay plans to sell down its 857 billion pound ($915 billion) bond portfolio carries big risks. Bailey’s goal is to cut holdings by 80 billion pounds over the next year. UBS analysts reckon issuance of gilts, after factoring in sales and redemptions from QT, will reach 355 billion pounds in the year ending March 2024. If Bailey can now tighten monetary policy without freaking out investors, his U-turn will have been worth the risk.

REUTERS/Leonhard Foeger/File PhotoLONDON, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Britain's pound plunged to record lows on Monday and bonds were slammed for a second day, as investors punished UK assets after the government's mini-budget announcement last week. The presentation of the mini-budget was received quite badly by the markets – sterling literally collapsed. The significant tax cuts announced by the Treasury Secretary cause concerns for the currency markets because of rising government debt." One is the loss of confidence in UK fiscal policy and that won't help sterling.
