The Aussie dollar surged after Australian employment beat forecasts, while the euro held steady ahead of the European Central Bank's (ECB) monetary policy decision later in the day. Markets have further trimmed back expectations for a December rate hike from the Bank of Japan after Bloomberg news reported Japan's central bank sees "little cost" to waiting. The Politburo on Monday vowed to switch to an "appropriately loose" monetary policy to spur economic growth. The Swiss franc traded at 0.88315 per dollar, with markets weighing the prospect of a half-point rate cut on Thursday from the Swiss National Bank. The dollar last fetched C$1.41435 after the Bank of Canada slashed its key policy rate by 50 basis points to 3.25% on Wednesday to help address slower growth.

In a Wednesday interview with CNCB's Jim Cramer, Sempra CEO Jeffrey Martin described why he thinks the U.S.'s energy production capabilities are essential for the country to sustain an edge in technological advances. "The critical success factor is, are we prepared to invest the capital to ramp up electricity production and expand and modernize the grid?" According to Martin, Sempra is well-positioned because of its market share in states like California and Texas. He said the company has a large LNG export facility and two more currently under construction. President Joe Biden in January paused approval for new LNG export projects, but the oil and gas industry largely expects President-elect Donald Trump to greenlight such efforts.

Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck is perfectly content watching the rockets his company builds reach the heavens while his feet remain firmly planted on Earth. I just have a burning desire to create things to enable others to go to space," says Beck, 47. The native New Zealander launched Rocket Lab in 2006 with no college degree or space industry connections. But Beck insists he's not interested, citing one of the very traits that helped him successfully build his company: "a healthy degree of paranoia." He has "so much respect" for astronauts, particularly those with engineering backgrounds, who understand the danger of space travel and do it anyway, he says.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday will weigh the fate of an 88-mile railroad project that would transport crude oil in Utah as the justices consider a dispute over whether federal officials conducted a stringent enough environmental review before approving it. It is opposed by Eagle County, Colorado, which claims that it will suffer from downstream effects of the railroad, as well as environmental groups. The federal entity overseeing approval of the project, the Surface Transportation Board (STB), conducted an environmental review and subsequently gave it the green light to commence. The Biden administration has backed the coalition at the Supreme Court in arguing that the STB's review was sufficient. Lawyers for Eagle County said in court papers that the appeals court correctly concluded that the STB had not done a full analysis.

The Canadian dollar and Australian dollar were in focus on Monday ahead of their central bank meetings this week, while the euro and other major currencies held steady as traders reviewed the U.S. dollar's prospects. On the former, a quarter point cut by the ECB is baked in. The Canadian dollar is trading near a 4-1/2-year low as markets anticipate another outsized interest rate cut. Markets give a higher probability for a larger 50 basis point cut, and are even priming for negative interest rates by next year. While the case for the rate cut seems sealed, investors have one eye on U.S. consumer price inflation (CPI) data due this week.

Meta said its goal is to add between 1 to 4 gigawatts of nuclear power in the U.S. beginning in the early 2030s.
