LONDON, Oct 20 (Reuters) - British retail sales fell more than expected in September as shoppers delayed buying autumn clothing due to unseasonably warm weather, against the backdrop of broader cost of living pressures, official figures showed on Friday. "It was a poor month for clothing stores as the warm autumnal conditions reduced sales of colder weather gear. Clothing sales volumes fell 1.6%, and household goods stores saw a 2.3% drop in sales, which the ONS attributed to ongoing cost of living pressures. While retail sales volumes surged in mid 2021 when shops fully reopened in Britain after COVID-19 restrictions, purchases have steadily fallen since and for the past year sales volumes have been below pre-pandemic levels. Retail sales in the third quarter were likely to subtract 0.04 percentage points from the growth rate of gross domestic product over the period, the ONS said.

Britain's high inflation rate has slowed but at 6.7% in August it remains more than three times the Bank of England's 2% target. The BRC's like-for-like sales measure - which adjusts for changes in store space - slowed to show growth of 2.8% from 4.3% in August. Seventy percent of consumers surveyed by Barclays said they were finding ways to reduce costs, up slightly from August. Jack Meaning, chief UK economist at Barclays, said the warning signs of wariness among consumers was filtering through into their spending decisions.

Why Wall Street investors are freaking out
  + stars: | 2023-10-04 | by ( Nicole Goodkind | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
Here’s why investors are freaking out:Rates and the Fed: A surge in corporate debt sales and rising bond yields have sent stocks lower. Moody’s, the only major credit rating firm to keep a perfect score for the United States, has warned that a government shutdown would be “credit negative” for the United States. Geopolitical risks are still elevated as Russia’s war on Ukraine continues and relations between the United States and China remain tense. October also marks the end of the fiscal year for many mutual funds in the United States. Statistical evidence doesn’t quite support the phenomenon, but the level of superstitious caution on Wall Street is real.

In the past year, clothing retailers have sought to clear excess stock that had piled up due to a shift in consumer demand to essentials from discretionary items like clothing. But with fourth-quarter temperatures expected to start off warm, according to weather tracking firm Weather Trends International, stores carrying winter styles and gear could find themselves loaded with inventory at the end of the season. European company Pepco Group (PCOP.WA) also noted that the landing of its autumn and winter clothing inventory had coincided with persistent record-warm weather in its core Central and Eastern European markets. In the United States, temperatures could rise by 2 to 12 degrees Fahrenheit on average in the October-December period compared with last year, according to Weather Trends International. Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF.N) also said there was strong demand for "seasonless products" in the second quarter, particularly in the men's category, as customers picked out year-round clothing items and styles.

CNN —The full harvest moon will shine in the early morning hours of September 29, also marking the fourth and final supermoon of 2023. September’s full moon will appear about 5% bigger and 13% brighter than the average full moon, according to NASA. Other monikers for September’s full moon across different indigenous tribes include the corn maker moon from the Abenaki tribe, the moon of the brown leaves from the Lakota people and autumn moon from the Passamaquoddy tribe. Many people associate the harvest moon with being orange in color as it begins to rise, but the same could be said of all full moons. Only part of the moon will pass into shadow as the sun, Earth and moon will not completely align.

Outbound travel from China is surging ahead of the first "Golden Week" holiday period since the country has allowed international travel to resume and even as China's economic growth has slowed. Golden Week, which begins Oct. 1 this year, marks the annual weeklong period that includes the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day in China. Trip.com said bookings for travel within China are up by four times compared with last year's Golden Week, with residents opting to travel between different provinces for longer periods of time. Northwest China's autumnal tours and South China's comfortable climate have made those destinations particularly popular, Trip.com said. Golden Week typically spurs hundreds of millions in China to travel.

But for many restaurants and retailers, fall is already here. But in the past few years, restaurants and retailers have been releasing their autumnal food and beverages even earlier. November is still the most popular month to launch limited-time pumpkin items timed for Thanksgiving, but August is gaining ground. Restaurants' and retailers' extended fall also comes as pumpkin food and beverages become more popular throughout the autumn. As schools have pushed for an earlier start to the school year, Labor Day has lost some of its status as a seasonal indicator.

As Starbucks celebrates the 20th anniversary of its pumpkin spice latte, the coffee chain is adding a third pumpkin drink to its fall menu. Starting Thursday, the iced pumpkin cream chai latte joins the company's existing pumpkin lineup, which also includes the pumpkin cream cold brew, returning for its fifth year. The seasonal menu addition comes as Starbucks customers increasingly choose cold drinks over hot options, no matter the temperature outside. Starbucks' more upscale Reserve locations, which also serve alcohol, will serve special pumpkin spice drinks for the first time, too. The Reserve fall menu includes a pumpkin spice espresso martini, playing off the espresso martini craze, and a pumpkin spice whiskey barrel-aged iced latte.

In the words of a television spot from 1979: “It’s not city beer. Rather than acknowledge Bud Light’s place in a faceless globalized chain of ownership, advertisements for the beer attempt to underscore its supposedly distinctive American and working-class character. Some years ago a series of advertisements featured the Bud Knight, a character who figured in faux-medieval settings alongside a royal personage known as the Dilly Dilly King. In one spot, the king enters a tavern and orders “Bud Lights for everyone,” eliciting cries of approval from the assembled crowd. The implication is that Bud Light is for ordinary decent people who just want to have a good time with their friends, not smug effete connoisseurs.

LONDON, Feb 20 (Reuters) - Faux fur, oversized coats and hot water bottles dominated Burberry’s (BRBY.L) runway as Daniel Lee presented his vision for the British heritage label at London Fashion Week on Monday. Burberry's mackintosh-style trench coat was re-imagined in a muted khaki with green faux fur lapels. English rose patterned tailoring sat alongside chunky rubber boots with an equestrian twist and cosy square toed shearling and faux fur shoes in the Autumn Winter 2023 collection. Monday's show follows the unveiling of Burberry's new logo: a sleeker elongated typeface and a campaign steeped in "Britishness". Lee previously created a buzz at Italy's Bottega Veneta with pillowy leather clutch handbags and slip-on heels.
