That is followed by inflation readings in France and the wider euro zone later in the day, alongside the Federal Reserve's policy decision, which takes center stage. With plenty of risk events to mark the month-end, currency moves were largely subdued in early Asia trade as investors were hesitant to take on fresh positions. "We anticipate that the BOJ will increase interest rates to around 0.25% at the upper limit." "A rate hike could help stabilize the yen's current levels, whereas the absence of a rate hike may trigger renewed selling pressure driven by carry trades." The yen similarly made headway against other currencies, with the euro falling 0.07% to 165.07 yen and the Australian dollar slipping 0.12% to 99.80 yen.

“Once prey is within view, the Drop Bear will drop as much as eight meters to pounce on top of the unsuspecting victim. When CNN Travel asked Australian film star Chris Hemsworth for advice on avoiding drop bears in 2018, he said: “Bring an umbrella.”The origins of the drop bearDespite the drop bear’s popularity and growing international reputation, its actual origins are unknown. Not every Australian grew up with stories of drop bears, but those who do remember being told about drop bears by their parents, especially people who grew up in the country or in farming communities. SAINT-DENIS, France — With a 90-yard run as the final seconds ticked off the clock, Alex Sedrick and Team USA’s women’s Eagles rugby team snatched the bronze medal off the necks of a heavily-favored Australian team to deliver America its first Olympic medal in rugby sevens. Then the green and gold pinned the Americans deep in their own end, inching them backward as the final seconds ticked off the clock. AdvertisementBut then Sedrick got possession in the middle of the field and burst through a hole in the Aussie defense. In an instant, Sedrick was off on 90-yard sprint down the grass, that finished with her running through the uprights. But in a game with just 14 players on a massive field, anything can happen, and in the final seconds against the Aussies, Sedrick made sure it did.

Australia is facing an egg supply crunch thanks to bird flu outbreaks — and it's led McDonald's to trim breakfast hours by 90 minutes, also pushing supermarkets to restrict purchases to two cartons per consumer. Citing "industry challenges," McDonald's on Tuesday announced that it was temporarily serving breakfast until 10.30am instead of midday across Australia. The government added that it is currently responding to outbreaks of the H7 high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) at 11 poultry farms. The Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) noted that there is currently no evidence that people can contact the virus through "properly prepared" food. "Avian influenza (bird flu) is not a food safety concern and it is safe to eat properly handled and cooked chicken meat, eggs and egg products," the organization added.

McDonald’s has cut breakfast service timings by 90 minutes, the company said, after a shortage of eggs caused by bird flu outbreaks that have led to the slaughter of about 1.5 million chickens. Australia is battling outbreaks of several strains of highly pathogenic avian influenza that have struck 11 poultry facilities, most of them egg farms, in its southeast since May. None of the strains are the H5N1 variant of bird flu that has spread through bird and mammal populations worldwide, infecting billions of animals and a small number of humans. “Consumers can be assured there’s still over 20 million hens under the care of hundreds of egg farmers across Australia that will continue to work hard to ensure there’s eggs on shelves,” he added. Bird flu spreads to farmed animals from wild birds.

Euro rises after France's first-round vote, yen struggles
  + stars: | 2024-07-01 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
The euro rose on Monday after the first round of France's snap election put the far-right in pole position, though by a smaller margin than projected, while a downgrade to Japan's first-quarter growth figures knocked the yen lower. "They (RN) have actually performed a little bit worse than what was expected," said Carol Kong, a currency strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The yen struggled to gain ground against a broadly weaker dollar, and was last 0.05% lower at 160.93 per dollar. That could lead to a cut to the Bank of Japan's growth forecasts in fresh quarterly projections due later this month and affect the timing of its next interest rate hike, analysts said. Elsewhere in Asia, the Chinese yuan - also a victim of stark interest rate differentials with the U.S. - was last 0.02% higher at 7.2981 per dollar in the offshore market.
