The new findings add to strong, but circumstantial evidence that the SARS-CoV2 virus jumped from infected animals to humans and that the market was a central site of early spread. Of the animals present at the market, rabbits, dogs and raccoon dogs are known to be susceptible to Covid-19 infections. Their analysis shows that SARS-CoV2 virus present at the market emerged at the same time as the virus from the larger pandemic, suggesting they are one and the same. The pandemic virus would have an earlier birthdate. “A lab origin is a possibility.

CNN —In some corners of society, there appears to be a shift in the way people talk about kids. Every so often, a provocative social media post sets off predictably polarizing discourse about the presence of children in daily life. The implication (joking or otherwise) is that children are a nuisance and adults shouldn’t have to endure them if they don’t want to. The people behind them aren’t part of some organized movement nor are they actually lobbying for the exclusion of children from public spaces. Rather, Berg understands online disdain for kids partly as a performative response to rhetoric from political and religious conservatives.

Monthlong heat waves. AdvertisementLocal climate hazardsTo make predictions at a city level, Mackres said WRI built on global climate modeling done by hundreds of other researchers. World Resources InstituteIn Bengaluru, India's fifth-most-populous city, extreme heat has caused severe water shortages and surging energy demand. Now it ranks second behind San Francisco after a series of deadly heat waves prompted residents to install AC. If that demand is met with fossil fuels like oil, gas, and coal, it could exacerbate the climate crisis, WRI said.

The HOMES Act would establish a new federal housing development authority charged with building and rehabilitating more than a million permanently affordable homes. This so-called "social housing" is notably different from traditional public housing, which is entirely reserved for the poorest households. Rent for all tenants in social housing would be capped at 25% of their income. "There is another way: social housing," Ocasio-Cortez and Smith said in their op-ed. And in California, lawmakers introduced a bill to construct mixed-income social housing on government-owned land.

Despite these differences, Morgan Stanley expects tax rates to increase no matter who takes office. And a divided Congress, which Morgan Stanley predicts is very likely in November, will only further reduce the likelihood of dramatic change. Typically, the stock market is more influenced by the business cycle than tax policy or political party, according to Morgan Stanley.

But in his own way (very demure, very mindful) that is what happened Wednesday when he announced the Fed’s first rate cut in four years, a giant half-point reduction that will lower the cost of borrowing and offer financial relief for consumers and businesses. Whenever a reporter asks him about politics, Powell refuses to bite. Like on Wednesday, when he was asked whether the half-point rate cut had political motivations, he responded with something approaching exasperation. It’s just maximum employment and price stability on behalf of all Americans.”Of course, that’s unlikely to stop either party from using the rate cut news to their advantage, given that the economy is the No. Trump can continue to claim that a rate cut is a sign the economy is weak.

CNN —The dappled starlight and swirling clouds of Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” are thought to reflect the artist’s tumultuous state of mind when he painted the work in 1889. Now, a new analysis by physicists based in China and France suggests the artist had a deep, intuitive understanding of the mathematical structure of turbulent flow. Batchelor’s scaling mathematically represents how small particles, such as drifting algae in the ocean or pieces of dust in the wind, are passively mixed around by turbulent flow. “I think this physical relationship must be embedded in his mind so that’s why when he made this famous ‘Starry Night’ painting, it mimics the real flow,” Huang said. “What I take away from studies like this is that (van Gogh) captured some of this universality in the beautiful (‘Starry Night’),” Beattie added.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has unveiled his latest buzzword to describe monetary policy, with a "recalibration" of policy at a pivotal moment for the central bank. "This recalibration of our policy stance will help maintain the strength of the economy and the labor market, and will continue to enable further progress on inflation as we begin the process of moving forward a more neutral stance," Powell said. Financial markets weren't quite sure what to make of the chair's messaging in the meeting's immediate aftermath. However, asset prices soared Thursday as investors took Powell at his word that the unusually outsized move wasn't in response to a substantial slowing of the economy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 jumped to new highs in trading Thursday after swinging violently Wednesday.

LONDON — European markets were poised to open higher as investors digested the U.S. Federal Reserve's first interest rate cut in four years and looked ahead to the Bank of England's rate decision later in the session. Back in Europe, investor attention is now turning to the Bank of England, with the central bank largely expected to hold rates steady at 5%. The Fed's jumbo rate cut is unlikely to impact the Bank of England, according to economists, as the central bank ratified its decision around lunchtime Wednesday, hours before the U.S. announcement. Also on Thursday, Norway's central bank will deliver its latest interest rate decision.

I ended up having to wear clothes from the gift shop and wash my undergarments in a sink. The largest and heaviest bags are sometimes left behind and brought in on a later flight. Since the lodge's laundry service had a too-long turnaround time, I had to wash my underwear and socks in the sink with a hotel soap bar. Talen's surge comes on the back of its deal to sell a data center campus to Amazon Web Services and supply the facility with nuclear power from the Susquehanna station northwest of Allentown, Pennsylvania. The deal is viewed as a trailblazing agreement for the power industry, and Wall Street has taken notice. A year ago, Talen was not covered by any Wall Street analysts, according to FactSet data. And Talen's assets are located almost entirely in the PJM grid, a predominantly mid-Atlantic region where power prices are expected to explode as demand outstrips supply due in part to growing data center load. Data center developers are expected to spend $250 billion annually on data centers, Barclays analyst Nicholas Campanella said in a note this week.
