A woman who had accused the mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor of raping her in a hotel penthouse in 2018 was awarded nearly 250,000 euros, or about $260,000, in damages on Friday after a jury found him liable for sexual assault in a civil trial in Dublin. Mr. McGregor was previously the subject of a criminal investigation in Ireland, his home country, in connection with the allegations, but was not charged. Texas education officials on Friday approved a new elementary school curriculum that draws from the Bible, the final step of a contentious effort to expand religious instruction in the state. The reading and language arts curriculum, which will be optional for schools, could serve as a model for conservative Christian leaders in other states. Starting in August, the new Texas curriculum, for kindergarten through fifth grade, will be available to districts. The state serves more than two million elementary students in its public schools. BEIJING — A former student went on a stabbing rampage at a vocational college in eastern China on Saturday, killing eight people and wounding 17 others, police said, adding it appeared the suspect was angry over not getting his graduation certificate and failing an exam. The knife attack took place at the Wuxi Vocational College of Arts and Technology in Yixing, part of Wuxi city in the eastern province of Jiangsu. The suspect was apprehended at the scene and confessed to his actions, police added. “According to preliminary investigations, the suspect, surname Xu — male, 21 years old, a 2024 graduate of the college — attacked others after failing an exam and not receiving his graduation certificate, as well as being dissatisfied with his internship compensation,” a statement by the Yixing Public Security Bureau said. It added that efforts were underway to treat the injured and investigate the case.

CNN —Eight people were killed and 17 others injured in a stabbing attack on a college campus in the eastern Chinese city of Yixing on Saturday, police say. The attack is the latest mass casualty incident to hit China. Last Monday, 35 people were killed after a car plowed into pedestrians who were exercising in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai, injuring over 40 people. As news of the attack spread, censors swooped in to take down online videos of the attack and moderate social media discussionsIn October, police arrested a 50-year-old man after a stabbing attack near an elementary school in Beijing injured five people, including three children. In September, three people were killed and 15 others injured in a knife attack at a suburban supermarket in Shanghai.
