New York CNN —Since last year’s Labor Day, US unions have flexed their muscle in a way not seen in decades. When including those smaller strikes, the total number of strikes in the past year increased to nearly 400. The United Mine Workers union never reached a deal on a new contract. The public also sees unions having more power than in the past, and they approve of that, according to the poll. More major strikes loomA number of major labor disputes are still looming.

Unlike prior union leaders, Fain is attempting to negotiate with all three automakers at once, refusing to select a "target" company to focus on while extending deals at the others. He's also been far more confrontational with the automakers compared to previous union leaders, at times launching personal attacks on executives. "I think there's a reasonable chance they strike Stellantis first and then give a couple more days for Ford and GM to give a better offer." The union could use that work stoppage as a warning to GM and Ford to finalize their deals, he said. DETROIT – As the United Auto Workers prepares for what are expected to be highly contentious negotiations with the Detroit automakers later this year, the union's leadership is undergoing its largest upheaval in decades. The shuffle follows a years-long federal investigation that uncovered systemic corruption involving bribery, embezzlement and other crimes among the top ranks of the organized labor group. A reform group called UAW Members United has successfully campaigned to elect five new representatives to the 14-member board, but not all seats are settled. For investors, UAW negotiations are typically a short-term headwind every four years that result in higher costs. Canadian union Unifor will also be simultaneously negotiating this year with the Detroit automakers, adding even more complexity and competition for investments and jobs.
DETROIT – The United Auto Workers union will for the first time this week attempt to organize a major electric vehicle battery plant for a Detroit automaker, potentially setting a precedent for similar multibillion facilities to come. The UAW's push into the battery plants comes amid a large labor movement that has included U.S. corporations like Amazon and Apple to Starbucks to Chipotle . Joint venture battery facilities are viewed as crucial for the UAW to grow and add members, as automakers such as GM transition to electric vehicles, which require less traditional labor and parts than cars with internal combustion engines. The Ultium plant in Ohio, which started production in August, is the first of at least four U.S. battery facilities for the GM-LG joint venture. Ford Motor , Stellantis and other automakers have announced similar plants, which would each have to be organized separately in addition to other Ultium plants.
