France's Farmer Lobby Turns up Heat on Government Before Talks
  + stars: | 2024-01-22 | by ( Jan. | At A.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +3 min
Farmers cite a government tax on tractor fuel, cheap imports, water storage issues, price pressures from retailers and red tape among their grievances. France's largest farm union FNSEA has said it is considering nationwide protests in the coming weeks. Farming policy has always been a sensitive issue in France, the European Union's biggest agricultural producer, with thousands of independent producers of wine, meat and dairy. President Emmanuel Macron is wary of farmers' growing support for the far-right ahead of the European Parliament elections in June. Fearing a spillover from farmer protests in Germany, Poland and Romania, the government has withdrawn a draft farming law planned for debate this week and invited farming representatives for talks, starting on Monday afternoon.

October 11 - PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies were in control for the first 14 innings of their National League Division Series against the Atlanta Braves. The final four innings of Game 2 were so calamitous for the Phillies that the series' momentum swung entirely to Atlanta. "As I've said many times, this is a tough team, resilient team," Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Tuesday. "I mean, he's as good as there is in the game," Braves manager Brian Snitker said of Riley. That includes a 2-0 mark against the Braves in last year's NLDS en route to a World Series berth.

But if you are a believer in momentum heading into Game 3 Wednesday, then the Braves just might be the team to beat. The Phillies said all the right things in the clubhouse after Game 2. Thomson and Game 3 starter Aaron Nola said vibes were good in Philly, especially with a needed day off to regroup. Nola gave up five hits, walked two and struck out six in six-plus innings against the Braves in a Game 3 NLDS win last season. So we just got to take it game by game.

But Riley alertly backed up the play and zipped a throw to first that completed the double play. Unbelievable.”So did Riley, backing up on a play that he never could've expected to be involved in. "Amazon had the power to do it, but they bottled it," said a former senior Amazon adtech staffer who worked on the ad server. Amazon's own marketing team had also shifted a lot of its ad serving requirements to Amazon Ad Server. Amazon said only a small proportion of its marketing is run through the Amazon Ad Server. Amazon's $20 billion-plus annual advertising budget also includes TV, outdoor, and other media channels that don't require ad serving technology. REUTERS/Yara Nardi/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMILAN, Sept 20 (Reuters) - U.S. fund KKR and Italy's Treasury are set to ask Telecom Italia (TIM) for more time to arrange a joint bid for its landline grid, three sources close to the matter said. KKR (KKR.N) last month won the backing of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government, which authorised the Treasury to join its bid for an asset deemed of strategic national interest. The U.S. fund's preliminary bid valued the business -- dubbed NetCo -- at around 23 billion euros ($25 billion) including debt and taking into account a number of variables. The French group, which owns 24% of TIM, has so far shown little appetite for a deal under KKR's terms. The Treasury is evaluating the request, one of these people said, without adding further details.

Sand dredging is 'sterilising' ocean floor, UN warns

REUTERS/Ann Wang/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsGENEVA, Sept 5 (Reuters) - Around 6 billion tons of marine sand is being dug up each year in a growing practice that a U.N. agency said is unsustainable and can wipe out local marine life irreversibly. The findings from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) coincide with the launch of a new platform 'Marine Sand Watch' backed by funding from the Swiss government that monitors dredging activities using marine tracking and artificial intelligence. "The amount of sand we are withdrawing from the environment is considerable and has a large impact," UNEP's Pascal Peduzzi told a Geneva press briefing. In some cases, companies remove all the sand to the bedrock, meaning that "life may never recover", Peduzzi added. China, the Netherlands, the United States and Belgium are among the countries most active in the sector, he said.
