Southwest Airlines , Alaska Airlines and American Airlines are among the carriers that have forecast slower revenue growth or weakness for the third quarter, despite strong demand. The NYSE Arca Airline index is down more than 6% this week, slimming its gains to 37% so far this year. Southwest on Thursday said it expects unit revenue to drop as much as 7% in the current quarter from a year ago on a 12% increase in capacity. Meanwhile, Alaska Airlines this week forecast third-quarter revenue ranging from flat to up 3% and unit revenues down about 9% "at the midpoint," with capacity up as much as 13% compared with last year.

June 29 (Reuters) - Asset manager Fidelity is once again seeking to list and trade shares of its Wise Origin Bitcoin Trust spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund, according to a filing by listing exchange Cboe Global Markets (CBOE.Z) with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Fidelity is one of several big asset managers that have applied to list bitcoin ETFs recent weeks. The SEC has rejected dozens of spot bitcoin ETF applications in the past few years, including one from Fidelity in January 2022. The first bitcoin futures ETF was approved in October 2021, helping send the volatile bitcoin to an all-time high of $69,000 in November 2021, and raising hopes that a spot bitcoin ETF would soon be approved. Spot ETFs directly track the price of the cryptocurrency, while futures-based ETFs follow the price of bitcoin futures contracts.

If approved, a bitcoin ETF from the world's biggest asset manager could attract investors reluctant to buy the high-risk cryptocurrency directly. Digital asset manager Grayscale had its proposal for a spot bitcoin ETF rejected last year. LESS CAPITAL OVERALLAfter surprise rate hikes in Australia and Canada, and as the Federal Reserve forecasts two more hikes, investors are now betting that interest rates will remain higher for longer. Bitcoin had benefited from ultra-low interest rates, which incentivised investors to take riskier bets in search of returns. Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla has said an obesity pill could eventually be a $10-billion-a-year product for Pfizer. Truist Securities analyst Robyn Karnauskas said Lilly is now ahead in the race for a once-a-day obesity pill. Pfizer said last month that danuglipron helped patients lose weight on par with Novo Nordisk's (NOVOb.CO) Ozempic in a mid-stage study that tested it in patients with Type 2 diabetes. None of the patients in the lotiglipron trials reported liver-related symptoms or side effects, there was no evidence of liver failure and none required treatment, Pfizer said. Liver enzyme elevations observed in lotiglipron trials have not been seen in patients enrolled in danuglipron trials, the company added.

The recent crypto platform bankruptcies trapped customer assets now worth around $34 billion, according to Xclaim, which allows creditors to trade such claims. To protect themselves, institutional crypto investors are switching to exchanges that offer stronger asset protection, boosting due diligence on trading partners, and executing trades in smaller chunks, among other new risk management measures, according to executives and industry data. European crypto asset manager CoinShares ramped up its counterparty due diligence after losing 26 million pounds ($32.65 million) in the collapse of FTX. Financial regulators like the SEC say many crypto companies flout applicable rules, meaning risk management still lags the traditional financial sector. "This is inevitably risk we're all carrying in crypto - we have uncomfortable concentration risk on one large exchange called Binance," said Nickel's Crachilov.

Airline stocks slide despite CEOs' upbeat demand outlook

Airline stocks slid Wednesday as the market fell broadly amid concerns over stability of some banks and new data that showed a slowdown in consumer spending. Airline executives during a JPMorgan industry conference on Tuesday said they expect strong demand — and profits — in 2023, despite higher costs, with leisure travel continuing to lead the way. Consumer appetite for air travel has surged over the past year and higher fares have boosted airlines' bottom lines. "As I tell many of my CEO friends across the industry and outside of the industry, I know where your employees are. "And that's because of the new way of work, the new hybrid, new mobility.
CHICAGO, March 13 (Reuters) - United Airlines Holdings Inc (UAL.O) on Monday forecast an unexpected loss in the current quarter, citing lower demand as well as higher costs from a potential contract deal with pilots. Booming travel demand has allowed U.S. carriers including United to offset cost pressures with higher ticket prices. United said a combination of lower-demand in January and February and higher capacity has weakened its pricing power. The Chicago-based carrier now expects an adjusted loss between 60 cents and $1.00 per share for the quarter through March. United and American Airlines (AAL.O) are now under pressure not just to conclude their pilot contract negotiations, but also better Delta's deal.
The years-long push for an exchange traded fund that tracks bitcoin will finally get its day in court this week. Several different firms tried to bring a spot bitcoin ETF to market in the U.S. without success, but Grayscale Investments is taking it a step further for the future of its Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) . The largest of those funds, the ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) , now has nearly $800 million in assets under management. Over the past year, the market price of a GBTC share has fallen by roughly 60%, according to Grayscale's website. Crypto winter The excitement around a bitcoin ETF has cooled considerably along with the prices for crypto markets in general.
Bitcoin and ether are on pace for a modest February win, even after suffering a big drop earlier in the month. Bitcoin had eked out a 0.2% gain for the month by 4:15 p.m. That led to a brief sell-off in crypto assets that took bitcoin and ether down about 6% and 8.5%, respectively, in the three-day period ended Feb. 10. In the U.S., however, investors are on Fed watch, said James Lavish, managing partner at the Bitcoin Opportunity Fund. "Bitcoin has been the tip of the spear for risk assets for a long time," he said.

CHICAGO, Jan 18 (Reuters) - U.S. airlines on the back of strong financial results remain upbeat about travel demand, even as economists and analysts say the risk of an economic recession has gone up. United Airlines (UAL.O) and Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) reported higher-than-expected quarterly earnings on resilient consumer demand, while American Airlines (AAL.O) lifted its profit outlook. Carriers are enjoying the strongest travel demand since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, boosted by reopening of closed borders, a strong U.S. dollar and rising corporate travel. While recession fears have sparked concerns about consumer spending, airline executives say travel demand is not likely to wane any time soon. United estimates domestic passenger revenue previously accounted for about 0.5% of the country's gross domestic product.
Crypto prices suffered badly in 2022, but developer activity for the year paints a more optimistic picture for investors. That puts developer growth at 9% for the year, the report showed, even as the price of ether dropped 67%, according to Coin Metrics. Its price collapsed 50% last year, but the strength of its developer community gave investors hope it would pull through. Meanwhile, bitcoin's developer population shrunk 4%, though it's still the fifth largest in the market at 300 full-time builders. Why it matters for investors Developer activity is an indicator of a network's utility and potential for end users.

The SPDR S&P Biotech ETF is up 5.9% and the NYSE Arca Pharmaceutical Index is down marginally at the start of the year. The drug industry is now divided between the haves and the have-nots. That wide gap in mood was in stark relief as thousands of industry professionals descended upon San Francisco last week for JPMorgan ‘s big healthcare conference. On one side were giddy pharma executives with plenty of access to cash and their stocks trading near record highs. On the other side, there were cash-strapped small biotech bosses, speaking of layoffs and suspended clinical trials.
Frankie Muniz is putting his racing career into high gear. The "Malcolm in the Middle" star shared on Instagram Wednesday that he will compete full time in the NASCAR-owned ARCA Series. He first drove a race car in 2004 while participating in the annual Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race in California. "I have a lot to learn and I know that," Muniz told PEOPLE. "But I'm going in, I'm putting in a hundred percent because I don't wanna look back at this opportunity and go, man, I wish I tried harder."
BofA has added a number of biotechnology stocks — a sector that is hot on Wall Street right now – to its list of top picks for the first quarter. The bank identified the biotech stocks, as well as some medical technology companies, as part of its thematic investing picks, on themes it says are related to a "transforming world." BofA listed the stocks under themes such as ageing, obesity and pandemic. The bank added biotech firm BioNTech , as well as medical equipment company ResMed , to its list under this theme. The bank added medical technology firm Silk Road Medical , along with biotech firms Cerevel and Denali , to its list of stocks to play this theme.
Investors looking for cover this year would have done well if they sought a safe haven in large-cap pharmaceutical stocks, a trend that is likely to continue into 2023. The Inflation Reduction Act provided some clarity around drug pricing that should help health-care stocks. The average price target, according to FactSet, is $62, or nearly 40% above the stock's closing price on Tuesday. Gene therapies in focus Investors will be closely watching the progress of several gene therapies, according to Phipps. "Yes, these are expensive therapies," Phipps said.
Ben McMillan, chief investment officer at IDX Digital Assets, said the rising popularity of blockchain-based tools including decentralized exchanges and decentralized finance had also been an important development this year. "We could see bigger allocations to digital assets once risk appetite resumes in 2023." Bitcoin and other tokens took a hammering, slumping by over half in just 49 days from the end of May. On a single day in June, bitcoin fell over 15%, its worst day since March 2020 when COVID chaos roiled financial markets. Bitcoin fell by a quarter in less than four days as Bankman-Fried scrambled for funds to bail his exchange out.
HONG KONG, Dec 15 (Reuters) - Two exchange traded funds (ETF) that track U.S.-listed cryptocurrency futures have raised a combined $73.6 million ahead of their debut on the Hong Kong stock exchange on Friday in defiance of the sector's meltdown. Cryptocurrencies have endured months of turmoil, with the collapse of crypto exchange FTX the latest blow to the sector. The larger of the two, CSOP Bitcoin Futures ETF (3066.HK), pulled in $53.9 million, according to the manager. On Friday, each lot trading on the Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing (HKEX) (0388.HK) will debut at HK$780 each.

Investors say it feels like a make-or-break moment for the Solana network, but they're optimistic it'll pull through. "Every community has to have a crucible moment," said Avichal Garg, a managing partner at venture capital firm Electric Capital. "FTX really helped construct this ecosystem, they put a lot of money and resources behind it and helped the flywheel get going," Garg said. On the bright side, whatever amount of Solana tokens was locked on the FTX exchange can't be sold now. However, those close to the Solana community have been strongly encouraged by growth trends in its developer base.
New York CNN Business —Stocks surged on Thursday in their best day since 2020 after a key inflation indicator came in softer than expected. Investors broke out their party hats as they interpreted the report to mean that peak inflation may finally be behind us. Crypto-advocates were hoping that rising interest and inflation rates would drive investors away from the dollar and into alternative assets like gold and Bitcoin. Then, central banks started raising rates to fight inflation, and the dollar strengthened significantly, seducing investors as the ultimate safe haven. Mortgage rates have risen throughout most of 2022, spurred by the Federal Reserve’s regime of interest rate hikes.
