It’s the first day on the job for new Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol, and expectations are high. Niccol explained that he carries a “beat-up notebook” with him to outline and track his progress toward his career goals. Trusting his gut and believing in his ability to succeed, Niccol said, has made the biggest difference in his career up to this point. “There will be times in your career when your gut will be tingling,” he said, noting that he had that feeling when he left Taco Bell to become Chipotle’s CEO in 2018. Niccol used a 5-word phrase in a phone screening with former Starbucks chair Mellody Hobson to illustrate his confidence and preparedness for the job.

Quang attributes the unexpected virality to a digital trend that first appeared at the end of 2023: the office siren. AdvertisementGoogle Trends shows searches for the term "office siren" increased tenfold between the first week of May and the first week of August. The office siren is a polarizing character — a sexed-up appropriation of office wear, restyled and applied to contexts outside the office. "Obviously, I'm not wearing this to the office," Quang said. "The office siren is just a character I'm playing."

New York CNN —New Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol won’t be a constant presence at its Seattle headquarters where he takes the helm next month. Starbucks is giving him a corporate jet to use to commute back and forth. Niccol is also expected to be traveling often, visiting stores and workers since he’s running a global operation of 39,000 stores and 450,000 employees. Earlier this month, Starbucks announced that Niccol would replace Laxman Narasimhan, whose stint as CEO lasted less than two years. Niccol is tasked with turning Starbucks’ fortunes around and mirroring the success he’s had at Mexican-inspired food chain Chipotle for the past six years.

Some countries, like Taiwan, will gain as many as 50% more millionaires during that time. But the United Kingdom and the Netherlands make "notable exceptions" on this list, per UBS, because both are forecasted to lose millionaires. The UK's three million millionaires put it third among countries with the highest number of millionaires last year, as measured in US dollars, per UBS. The loss continues a trend: The UK lost 16,500 millionaires between 2017 and 2023, per immigration consultancy Henley & Partners.

New York CNN —LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman is providing significant financial firepower to Smartmatic as the voting technology company fights Fox News and Newsmax over the right-wing networks’ repeated airing of 2020 election lies. A person with knowledge of the matter wouldn’t say exactly how much money Hoffman poured into Smartmatic but told CNN the eight-figure investment surpassed $10 million. Smartmatic is seeking billions of dollars in damages from Fox News, Newsmax and other right-wing figures that falsely accused the company of rigging the 2020 election. The voting technology company’s defamation lawsuit against Fox News is still in the fact-finding “discovery” phase and isn’t expected to go to trial until 2025. Smartmatic is also suing Trump 2020 campaign lawyer Sidney Powell and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell – two of the most egregious peddlers of election disinformation.

Michael R. Bloomberg, who is the former mayor of New York City and a Democratic megadonor, has donated nearly $20 million to support President Biden’s re-election campaign, a Bloomberg representative said. Mr. Bloomberg gave $19 million to Future Forward, the main Democratic super PAC supporting Mr. Biden, and $929,600 to the Biden Victory Fund, a joint fund-raising committee between Mr. Biden and the Democratic National Committee, said Howard Wolfson, the Education program lead at Bloomberg Philanthropies. “I stood with Joe Biden in 2020, and I am proud to do so again,” Mr. Bloomberg said in a statement. Mr. Bloomberg, who spent $1 billion of his own money on his failed presidential campaign in 2020, ultimately backed Mr. Biden in the Democratic primary that year and was a significant financial supporter of his campaign. He spent tens of millions of dollars through his political action committee on television ads supporting Mr. Biden and vowed to spend heavily in Florida, which then-President Donald J. Inflation in Turkey topped 75% in May in what economists expect to be the peak before prices start to ease. Consumer prices rose 75.45% in May on an annual basis and 3.37% on a monthly basis, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute, a government agency. Economists had previously forecast that inflation in the country of 85 million would peak around 75%. Turkey's central bank has kept its interest rate at 50% since March, citing the continuing need to counter climbing inflation in the country. The bank said at the time that "tight monetary stance will be maintained until a significant and sustained decline in the underlying trend of monthly inflation is observed."
