Sydney CNN —A 47-year-old woman has died after being tasered by police in New South Wales in the second deadly incident so far this year involving the weapon in Australia. Speaking on Friday, NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna said tactical police units shot the woman with a bean-bag round, injuring her shoulder. The woman was then shot with a taser before being arrested and walked to an ambulance, McKenna said. She later died in hospital. When she refused to drop the knife, it’s alleged White deployed his taser, causing Nowland to fall to the ground and hit her head.

CNN —A Chinese-Australian writer who has been detained in China for more than four years said he fears he could die in jail, after a large cyst was found on his kidney. Yang Hengjun, an Australian citizen and democracy activist, was detained in 2019 during a visit to see family in China and charged with espionage – accusations Yang has denied. “Yang Hengjun has been subjected to arbitrary detention in China by Chinese secret police for more than four years and his life is in danger,” he said. Yang is one of two Australians currently detained in China. Cheng Lei, an Australian TV anchor who worked for China’s state broadcaster CGTN, is accused of illegally supplying state secret overseas and has been detained for three years.

The 44-year-old man was surfing near Lighthouse Beach, Port Macquarie when a shark launched a “sustained and prolonged attack,” New South Wales (NSW) police said in a statement. Police said a bystander applied a tourniquet before paramedics transferred the surfer to Port Macquarie Hospital in critical condition. “[He is in] a serious condition with life threatening injuries, sustained from the lower leg injuries, and also significant blood loss,” NSW Police Chief Inspector Martin Burke said. Sydney, Australia CNN —A Sydney court on Thursday acquitted the founder of global megachurch Hillsong of covering up child sexual abuse committed by his father in the 1970s. Brian Houston learned of the abuse decades later and informed Church leaders but did not tell police. His father admitted the abuse and was defrocked, but was never charged and died in 2004. He founded the Hills Christian Life Centre with his wife Bobbie in Sydney in 1983, which grew into the Hillsong megachurch. Houston stepped down as Hillsong’s global senior pastor in January last year after police charged him with concealing his father’s crimes.

CNN —Four Australian surfers who went missing after their boat was struck by a storm in a remote part of Indonesia have been rescued after more than 38 hours at sea, according to parents of the missing tourists. A further search picked up Australian Elliot Foote, however one Indonesian crew member remains missing. A second boat with the rest of the party successfully reached Pinang Island Sunday evening, the families said, helping to raise the alarm. According to their families, the four Australians were on a surf trip in Indonesia to celebrate Foote’s 30th birthday. Indonesia has long been a popular destination for Australian tourists thanks to its proximity and a wealth of budget flights to places like Bali.

Sydney CNN —Four Australian defense personnel are missing in the water off the east coast of Australia after they were forced to ditch their Taipan helicopter in the sea during joint wargame drills with the United States late Friday. Speaking at a press conference in Brisbane on Saturday, Defense Minister Richard Marles said the search was ongoing for the four crew of the Australian Army helicopter. Last night, just after 10.30, an Australian Army helicopter, an MRH-90, ditched in waters close to Hamilton Island. Sydney CNN —An Australian physical education teacher who murdered his wife so he could start a new life with a teenage student has been found guilty of sexual abuse. Dawson was found guilty last year of murdering his first wife Lynette in a conviction that ended one of Australia’s longest-running cold cases. Judge Huggett sided with AB, finding that Dawson had groomed the teenager while she was still his pupil. Judge Huggett said she accepted the evidence that Dawson had proposed to AB at least once in 1980, when AB was 16. AB had testified against Dawson in the murder trial, which saw Dawson jailed for 24 years.

CNN —Myanmar’s ruling junta has suspended humanitarian access to western Rakhine state, where more than a million vulnerable people are in urgent need of aid a month after a powerful cyclone devastated the region, the United Nations said. The UN’s humanitarian office (OCHA) said the decision to stop aid access in the already-impoverished state has paralyzed the humanitarian response to Cyclone Mocha and crippled life-saving aid distributions to storm-hit communities. CNN —At least 10 people are feared dead after a late-night bus crash in the Australian state of New South Wales on Sunday, local police say. Emergency crews responded just before midnight to reports about a bus rolling over at a roundabout near the town of Greta, which is located in the wine growing Hunter region, New South Wales Police Force said in a statement. “The driver of the bus – a 58-year-old man – was taken to hospital under police guard for mandatory testing and assessment,” they said. “All Australians waking up to tragic news from the Hunter send our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of those killed in this horrific bus tragedy. Australia’s local station Channel 9 reported the bus was transporting wedding guests back home when the crash happened.

CNN —A planned summit of Quad leaders from the United States, India, Australia, and Japan in Sydney next week has been canceled after US President Joe Biden pulled out of his visit, Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Wednesday, adding that talks could still proceed as leaders visit Japan. The meeting would have brought Biden together with Albanese, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio on May 24 for the third in-person leaders’ summit of the informal security grouping. Biden was planning to travel to Sydney as part of a weeklong Asia tour that was set to begin in Hiroshima, Japan for a gathering of the Group of Seven (G7) leaders and include a stopover in Papua New Guinea before joining the March 24 summit of Quad leaders. “The Quad leaders’ meeting will not be going ahead in Sydney next week. We, though, will be having that discussion between Quad leaders in Japan,” Albanese said, adding that all four leaders would be in Japan this weekend but no time has been confirmed.

Sydney, Australia CNN —Eleven Indonesian fishermen were rescued by Australian maritime authorities from a tiny island after being stranded for six days without food or water, but there are fears nine others may have drowned. The second vessel, believed to have been carrying at least 10 others, sunk in the powerful storm, AMSA said. One survivor spent 30 hours in the water before reaching Bedwell Island. Pictures released by AMSA showed a group of stranded fishermen waving to the rescue helicopter above, silhouetted by a barren white beach. CNN affiliate Nine News Australia reported that the survivors were taken to Broome Hospital for treatment.

Sydney/Hong Kong CNN —Australia’s defense ministry will remove Chinese-made cameras from its offices over spying concerns, the country’s Minister for Defence Richard Marles has said. The concerns were raised by Senator James Paterson of the opposition Liberal Party, who said Wednesday that he had conducted an “audit” of Chinese-made security devices in use on Australian government premises. The audit found 913 devices, including cameras, access control systems and intercoms, made by Chinese-state owned enterprises Hikvision and Dahua, Paterson noted. “These companies have a very close relationship with the Chinese Communist Party, and they are subject to China’s National Intelligence laws, which require all Chinese companies and individuals to secretly cooperate with Chinese intelligence agencies if requested,” Paterson said in a radio interview Wednesday. And where those particular cameras are found they’re going to be removed.”Asked about the Australian government’s concerns over Chinese-made cameras, a spokesperson for Beijing’s foreign affairs ministry said China opposes “generalizing national security, abuse of state power and acts that discriminate and suppress Chinese companies.”

The bank will consult with First Australians in designing the $5 banknote, which could take several years to be issued, it added. Indonesian lawmakers passed a sweeping new criminal code on Tuesday that criminalizes sex outside marriage, as part of a tranche of changes that critics say threaten human rights and freedoms in the Southeast Asian country. The new code, which also applies to foreign residents and tourists, bans cohabitation before marriage, apostasy, and provides punishments for insulting the president or expressing views counter to the national ideology. “All have agreed to ratify the (draft changes) into law,” said lawmaker Bambang Wuryanto, who led the parliamentary commission in charge of revising the colonial-era code. “The old code belongs to Dutch heritage … and is no longer relevant.”The world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, Indonesia has seen a rise in religious conservatism in recent years. Under the laws, sex outside marriage carries a potential one-year prison term, and the crime of blasphemy, already on Indonesia’s books, could now lead to a five-year prison sentence.

Sydney CNN —A former high school teacher found guilty of killing his wife in one of Australia’s longest cold cases has been sentenced to 24 years in prison. New South Wales Supreme Court Justice Ian Harrison handed down the sentence on Friday, having found Chris Dawson guilty in August of murdering his wife Lynette in 1982. The crime saga inspired a 2018 podcast by Australian investigative journalist Hedley Thomas called “Teacher’s Pet,” which gained a cult following. The “Teacher’s Pet” podcast examined the police investigation and gathered new evidence including testimony that Dawson, a professional rugby player turned teacher, had been having sex with one of his students when his wife disappeared 40 years ago. Dawson had pleaded not guilty, instead claiming his wife had walked out on him and their two young children when they were just 2 and 4 years old.

Gunathilaka maintains his innocence of all charges and intends to vigorously defend the matter in court, his lawyer told CNN Thursday. Police reports released by a court in Sydney on Wednesday and reported by CNN affiliate, 7 News, detail the police allegations against Gunathilaka.
