Hopping from one mid-six-figure salary job in Big Tech to the next? More tech workers get laid offOver the last 18 months, tech workers say it's felt difficult to stay employed as round after round of layoffs have swept Big Tech and the broader industry. The tech job market got tougherTo add insult to injury, keeping a job in tech isn’t the only thing that’s more difficult. Aline Lerner, a former tech engineer and founder of interviewing.io, a site for tech recruiting and mock interviewing for tech job seekers, said it's now much more difficult to land a tech job, particularly at a high-profile or Big Tech company. “Anecdotally, I’d say it’s the hardest it’s been to get a tech job since probably the dot-com bust," Lerner said.

New York CNN —Consumers bought fewer toys in all of 2023, including during the key Christmas toy-buying period, showing that households continue to pare back on discretionary products. But toy sales in all of 2023 dropped 8%, both in dollar terms (how much consumers paid for toys) and in unit sales (meaning how many toys consumers bought). This shows that shoppers bought fewer toys but also traded down in prices to cheaper toys. “While 2023 was a challenging year for the U.S. toy industry, the four-year compound annual growth rate remains positive,” she said. Among the toys that consumers did buy in 2023, Pokémon, Barbie and Squishmallows were the top three best-selling brands last year, according to Circana.

Nielsen released data on the most-streamed shows in 2023, and "Suits" came out on top. The analytics firm released its fourth annual end-of-year streaming report, detailing the top television series and movies on streaming platforms in 2023. As a caveat, Nielsen's rankings are by minutes watched — meaning that longer series have an advantage. "Bluey" on Disney+ (43.9 billion), "NCIS" on Netflix and Paramount+ (39.4 billion), "Grey's Anatomy" on Netflix (38.6 billion), and "Cocomelon" on Netflix (36.3 billion) round out the top five. Morgan Stanley expects a conservative year-ahead outlook from Tesla when it reports earnings this week. Jonas points to German Tesla price cuts as a warning sign for the year ahead. Electric cars already have some of the worst resale values in the automotive industry, though Tesla leads this pack with the Model 3's residual value. "Any potential rollback of EV incentives would be an impediment for the pace of EV adoption," Jonas wrote. Slowing EV exports out of ChinaRelated to China's looming overcapacity issue, the country's government said this month it would rein in EV exports and crack down on "blind" production of electric cars.

While another third (32%) said they have not made the spending decision, only 13% said they would not be acquiring similar gen AI capabilities. Microsoft has pointed to customers including Visa, BP, Honda and Pfizer using Copilot, and professional services firm partners on Copilot AI including Accenture, EY, KPMG, and PwC. And even amid the hype, it's important to keep in mind that as gen AI spending grows, it is still dwarfed by companies' cybersecurity budget needs. That means roughly $5 will be spent on security for every dollar spent on gen AI. But it's growing, and for now at least, when it comes to the billions in gen AI spending, Microsoft is in the pole position.

What is 'stack ranking?' "Stack ranking" is an employee rating system popularized by executive Jack Welch in the 1980s during his time as CEO of GE. Does stack ranking work? And in many cases, having a stack ranking system is actually helpful, because there's an objective, collaborative process to evaluating employees," he said. Why is stack ranking controversial?

Childfree workers told Business Insider they often feel pressured to cover for parents at work. Benson's not alone in experiencing the tension of splitting work between childfree workers and those with kids. For childfree workers, it may lead to resentment, or feeling like their time isn't as valuable. And that might, in turn, lead to childfree workers being asked to take on more. But the childfree workers, parents, and experts that Business Insider spoke with say that making it a worker-to-worker dispute takes the onus off of companies and policy.

Seemingly overnight, the user-friendly generative AI technology enraptured the globe. It also promised to revolutionize the future of white-collar work — so long as it didn’t cause an AI apocalypse in the process. ‘The world woke up to the AI revolution’And one year since ChatGPT’s public release, the fervor around AI is still at a fever pitch. Some counties in Wisconsin have been using cheese brine or a beet juice blend instead. A few counties across the state have used cheese brine to melt icy roads in the winter. Green County is lucky enough to have a functioning cheese factory where it gets its cheese brine for de-icing. Other counties, like Polk County and Burnett County, have used cheese brine in the past but stopped when the local cheese factory halted operations. Bastian Parschau/Contributor/Getty ImagesIf you don't have access to cheese brine, then beet juice is a popular alternative, though it's not as cost-effective as cheese brine, Josh Kelch, the highway commissioner for Burnett County, told BI.

Every year, researchers in economics are awarded the Nobel Prize, alongside a hefty sum in winnings. All you have to do is bag a Nobel Prize. Franco Modigliani, an MIT professor who nabbed the Nobel in economics in 1985 , got about $225,000 in winnings. But, ultimately, he wanted to spend his winnings according to his own research on people's saving and spending habits. So when he was asked how he'd spend what was, in 2017 dollars, around $1.1 million in winnings, Thaler told reporters : "I will try to spend it as irrationally as possible."

Part of the reason that some non-hormonal birth control methods seem to have gained such traction on social media is that there is a tendency among some medical professionals to downplay the side effects of hormonal birth control methods that many women experience. Most women who use birth control are completely or somewhat satisfied with their methods of choice, but a minority of them experience reactions unpleasant enough to seriously impede their daily lives. Over the years, I have heard anecdotally about — and experienced — various side effects to different types of contraception: heavy breakthrough bleeding and abdominal pain with IUDs, mood disturbances with different types of pills, and sexual side effects with everything. Discussion of these issues, often confined to intimate chats among women, was aired out in a great extended bit from the comedian Beth Stelling’s new Netflix special, in which she recounts the various kinds of birth control she’s “experimented recreationally” with over the years. But some physicians say without data that point to the prevalence of some side effects, they find it difficult to respond.

While bad loans in India's banking sector are at a decade-low, estimated at 3.6% of assets by March 2024 by the central bank, Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das said this month the central bank was monitoring some categories of personal loans, without elaborating. What's worrying the regulator is a surge in tiny personal loans, particularly loans of up to 10,000 rupees ($120) taken for three to four months, often for "lifestyle" spending, according to a person familiar with the central bank's thinking. Four people discussed the central bank's concerns with Reuters but declined to be identified as they are not authorised to speak to the media. Ismail Sayyed, a 30-year old cab driver from Mumbai, took his first personal loan of 5,000 rupees this year.
