AUCKLAND, July 29 (Reuters) - The United States must find their rhythm after falling out of sync in their 1-1 draw against the Netherlands, midfielder Andi Sullivan said, with everything on the line for their final match of the Women's World Cup group stage on Tuesday. The four-times champions face a do-or-die meeting with debutantes Portugal in their last Group E game, where they must win or draw to avoid the humiliation of missing the knockout stage for the first time. "(Portugal are) a strong team, going to be a tough game, we know what's on the line," Sullivan told reporters on Saturday. If the U.S. team and the 2017 European Champions both win next week, the winner of Group E could come down to goal differential. "We're going to need to play fast and score a lot of goals," said Sullivan, who is competing in her first World Cup.

To the Editor:Re “Barbie Has Never Been a Great Symbol, but She’s an Excellent Mirror” (Opinion guest essay, July 22):Andi Zeisler’s essay was a walk down memory lane. As a feminist and a professor in a medical school with a young daughter in the 1980s, I was confronted with the dilemma of whether to buy a Barbie doll. Further, her pink high heels would have left this poor doll exhausted after a full day of conducting medical rounds and seeing patients. Perhaps this 1980s Dr. Barbie encapsulates the wish “to have it all”: a stereotyped image of ideal female beauty coupled with a traditionally male high-status job. She was more distant in my adulthood, as Barbie had become a subject of feminist concern. I followed many authors, artists, musicians and assorted culture jammers who were publicly working out their own Barbie issues in fascinating ways. However we feel about Barbie at a given moment says a lot more about us than it does about Barbie. Mattel’s litigious responses to things like the 1998 intersectional feminist body-image essay collection “Adios, Barbie” and Aqua’s gratingly ubiquitous earworm “Barbie Girl” didn’t help its P.R. It’s a fitting approach, since the most interesting thing about Barbie has always been our reactions to her.

The Americans are pursuing an unprecedented third consecutive title with Sullivan among 14 World Cup first-timers, nearly twice as many as in the U.S. team that competed in 2015. But veteran defender O'Hara believes experience on the World Cup stage does not necessarily translate to impact on the field and pointed to Sullivan, who was sharing the stage with her at a news conference on Tuesday, as a prime example. "Andy is bringing something very different than I was bringing as a player in my first World Cup," said O'Hara, who is competing in her fourth. Rapinoe, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2019, announced recently that this would be her last World Cup. The United States open against Vietnam on Saturday.

CNN —Kouri Richins’ husband was found dead at the foot of their bed last March. Around 9 p.m., she brought her husband, Eric Richins, a celebratory Moscow Mule cocktail in the bedroom of their home in Kamas, Utah. Newly released court documents detailed a series of illicit fentanyl purchases in the months leading up to his death. "We're in a crisis of trust in leadership," Sandra Sucher, a Harvard Business School professor who studies layoffs and trust, tells CNBC Make It. Currently, both South Carolina and Nebraska allow abortion up to around 22 weeks. Georgia and Florida also ban abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, but Florida’s ban is on hold pending a court challenge. South Carolina has become a destination for women seeking abortions as its Southern neighbors have shut down access to abortion. What’s NextWith a few weeks left in its session, South Carolina could still pass an abortion ban. And the state’s Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that its Constitution includes the right to abortion, but said the state still had an interest in regulating the procedure.
MillerKnoll Chief Executive Andi Owen in her Grand Rapids, Mich., home office. Photo: Sylvia Jarrus for The Wall Street JournalIt wasn’t the plan, but MillerKnoll Chief Executive Andi Owen passed on a crucial lesson to bosses everywhere this week: Zoom calls are a tricky venue for giving tough love to staff. Ms. Owen may have learned the hard way. In a video that sparked viral furor on social media, she gives a staff pep talk that shifts in tone as she addresses some employees’ “not-so-nice” questions about staying motivated if bonuses aren’t paid this year.
Just this week, there have been two high-profile face-plants by company leaders who ostensibly wanted to inspire their staffs and wound up doing…the opposite of that. In a statement to CNN, Clearlink declined to address Clarke’s remarks in the video, though the company did not challenge its authenticity. And who could forget Better.com’s CEO laying off 900 people over Zoom? But I’d propose a simple mantra for executives when weighing in on unpopular topics like returning to the office or laying people off. (OK, most nights — we believe in a four-day work week around here.)

New York CNN —The CEO whose “pity city” speech backfired spectacularly is now apologizing to her employees. “I feel terrible that my rallying cry seemed insensitive,” wrote Andi Owen, chief executive of office furniture giant MillerKnoll, in an email to staff Tuesday. “Don’t ask about ‘what are we going to do if we don’t get a bonus?’ Get the damn $26 million,” she said, citing an internal metric. Can I get some commitment for that?”She continued: “I had an old boss who said to me one time, ‘you can visit pity city but you can’t live there.’ So people: Leave pity city. The median employee income at MillerKnoll, the company behind sleek office furniture brands such as Herman Miller and Design Within Reach, was $44,810.

New York CNN —One boss is learning the hard way how a pep talk can quickly go off the rails. Andi Owen, CEO of office furniture company MillerKnoll, was asked in a recent video town hall about how workers should stay motivated if they don’t get a bonus. Owen went on to admonish her staff to “leave Pity City,” when it comes to fretting about bonuses. London CNN —London’s mayor has announced an emergency program to provide free meals for all children attending state primary schools in the capital, adding to a string of fresh evidence that Brits are struggling to afford necessities. “The cost-of-living crisis means families and children across our city are in desperate need of additional support,” Sadiq Khan, who himself received free school meals as a child, said in a statement Monday. A quarter of all London pupils, including those in high school, already qualify for free school meals according to national criteria largely based on household income, according to official data. This number tallies with an estimate by the Child Poverty Action Group that about 210,000 children living in poverty in London don’t qualify for free school meals because the eligibility criteria are “so restrictive.”Children eat lunch at St Mary's RC Primary School in Battersea, south London, on November 29, 2022. The 90 kilotonne Hoegh Esperanza, a shipborne regasification terminal, will in future be able to supply enough gas for 50,000 households for a year. Further floating liquid natural gas terminals will follow. Germany hopes to have 30 billion cubic metres of import capacity by the end of next year. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February left Germany, which for decades prospered from plentiful piped Russian gas, looking for alternative sources of energy once it had decided it did not wish to help finance Moscow's war. "The speed with which we built this should be a model for future infrastructure build-outs," Scholz said.

Shoichet and Will Lanzoni, CNNAs a growing number of migrants arrive in the border city of El Paso, Texas, officials there say the situation is "unsustainable" and could intensify into a full-blown crisis. Many of the arriving migrants have told reporters they're from Nicaragua. El Paso Times reporter Lauren Villagran told CNN on Wednesday that she spoke with Nicaraguan migrants waiting outside in frigid temperatures. Deputy City Manager Mario D'Agostino told reporters in recent days about 2,500 migrants have crossed the border daily, noting that the situation is different than past surges of migrants across the border.

“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” is a bit of a clunky title. But the film itself, which only ever calls itself “Glass Onion” on screen, is a delightful trifle of a mystery movie, a laugh-out-loud comedy that deserves to be a mass market theatrical hit. Perhaps “Glass Onion” is better experienced on streaming — at least philosophically. But perhaps “Glass Onion” is better experienced on streaming — at least philosophically. That being said, “Glass Onion” is as wonderfully enjoyable as its predecessor, even though there’s little need to connect the two.
