CNN —A doping case involving 23 Chinese swimmers took a diplomatic twist on Wednesday after US lawmakers called on the US Department of Justice and the International Olympic Committee to launch inquiries into the controversy. The Chinese swimmers tested positive for trimetazidine, a banned performance-enhancing substance, several months before the Tokyo Olympics – a tournament at which they were allowed to compete in, and went on to win medals at, according to a report from the New York Times released in coordination with German public broadcaster ARD. In a statement released Wednesday, the lawmakers called for an assessment as to whether the alleged doping was “state-sponsored,” adding that could warrant further diplomatic measures by the United States and the international community. CNN —As the 2024 Himalayan mountaineering season gets underway, another high-altitude project is in the works: removing tons of trash from Mount Everest. According to the Nepali army, the Mountain Cleanup Campaign collected 110 tons of waste between 2019, when the program started, and 2023. These bodies are of climbers who perished while attempting to summit the world’s highest peak. As a result, overcrowding and trash have been two of the biggest problems plaguing Everest in recent years. In addition, 2024 will be the first time that all Everest climbers are issued tracking chips, which can aid in search and rescue missions.

CNN —A Roman statue dating back almost 2,000 years has been discovered by construction workers building a parking lot in the United Kingdom. Digger driver Greg Crawley uncovered the marble head of a Roman lady at 16th century country estate Burghley House in Peterborough, England, last year while undertaking renovation works. Greg Crawley found the ancient statue head while building a parking lot. “I couldn’t believe it when they told me it was a Roman marble statue,” he added. The statue will now be displayed alongside other statues collected by the ninth earl at Burghley House.

CNN —The FBI has returned a trove of looted Japanese art to its country of origin after a family found a stash of artifacts in their late father’s Massachusetts attic.
