"They've got a population that is more people in retirement than working," Biden said of China. Those were some of the harshest comments Biden has ever made about China, though it's unclear how the president calculated his retirement figures. Instead of posturing himself a Mr. Fix-It, or a lone warrior fighting the good fight against a strong Beijing, Biden on Wednesday told blue-collar workers that the competition, as it stands, already favors America by a landslide. To upgrade boxed brownies, I'd switch my baking vessel or add some extracts to the batter. You can also throw in salty snacks, extra chocolate, peanut butter, or coffee. Even if your mix already has chocolate chips, add in the chopped chocolate anyways. Chocolate chips contain stabilizers that help them maintain their shape, but chopped chocolate will create beautiful melted pockets in the brownies. If you want a subtle boost to the chocolate flavor of your brownies, add a teaspoon or two of espresso powder to the batter.

A better way to handle layoffs

Out of everything that happens in the workplace, nothing underscores the harshly transactional nature of employment more than the way companies terminate their employees. To be sure, there are times when layoffs are necessary for the health — and even survival — of a company. In other words, the pitiless and coldhearted way businesses handle dismissals isn't just destructive to those who get dismissed. Is there a better way to handle layoffs? For starters, Herd says, managers should look the employees they're dismissing in the eye, rather than reading from a script.
