Timothy Mellon, a wealthy banking heir and railroad magnate, has reached the stratosphere of American political influence as the top supporter of Donald J. Trump, doling out millions to try to elect the former president and his allies. But to his neighbors in a Rhode Island beachfront enclave, he is better known as the prime suspect in the Narragansett Runestone Affair. It was the stuff of local lore and attracted visitors at low tide — to the consternation of Mr. Mellon, the pedigreed businessman whose home looked out on the rock. Mr. Mellon refused to talk and hired a former state attorney general as his lawyer. Nearly a year later, the matter was resolved quietly: Mr. Mellon agreed to return the stone, and prosecutors agreed not to bring charges.

Opinion | Reflecting on Biden’s Exit and His Legacy

To the Editor:As Joe Biden exits American political life, I’m filled with sadness and some regret. For my entire life, he’s been such a permanent fixture that it will be strange not to see images of him on the Senate floor or on the White House lawn. That megawatt smile and the constant messages of optimism, reassurance and decency that he conveyed — what will we do without them? Joe Biden has always been an extension of my father in a way — someone who loves people, feeds off their energy, and loves a good story and a well-played baseball game. I will miss Joe Biden as our president, and I’m thankful that he had the wisdom and courage to step aside for another presidential nominee.

The federal court that granted his release did so on certain conditions. In 2022, not long after his mother died, the last of those restrictions were lifted. Hinckley had by then opened a Twitter account and amassed thousands of followers. !” His following grew, and he quickly began to use his platform to release music and promote upcoming gigs. But every single one of them was canceled before he could play, as a result of backlash, including anonymous threatening emails, received by the venues.

Netanyahu Defended Israel’s War Effort to Congress
  + stars: | 2024-07-24 | by ( Matthew Cullen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
At a joint session of Congress this afternoon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel issued a full-throated defense of his country’s nine-month military campaign in Gaza. He angrily pushed back on the criticism of Israel’s tactics that has rippled through the American political left, and praised the U.S.-Israel alliance. “Our enemies are your enemies,” Netanyahu said. Vice President Kamala Harris also declined to preside, as is traditional for the vice president. Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with Harris tomorrow, after a separate meeting with the president.

I’m still waiting to wake up and realize that it was all a dream: the debate, the attempted assassination, President Biden’s Rehoboth reckoning, the quicksilver ascent of Vice President Kamala Harris. I have teachers texting and calling me from out of state who have never donated to a political candidate asking how to do it the right way to ensure it gets to the Harris campaign. It feels very “hopey changey.” I tuned in (along with hundreds of thousands of others) to watch Harris speak to the staff at campaign headquarters and walked away inspired. The transition from Biden to Harris has been remarkably seamless and successful. Her initial remarks on Monday were strong, powerful and clearly her own words, not things cribbed from the previous campaign.

CNN —President Joe Biden ran for reelection to save democracy. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden said in a letter he posted to X on Sunday afternoon. His struggles validated concerns of majorities of voters that he would be too old for a second term that would have ended when he is 86. But in the end, Biden could not find a way to make voters unsee the poignant picture of an 81-year-old commander in chief who appeared to have seriously declined and was stumbling in the debate. Years earlier, in March 1952, Harry S. Truman, another Democratic president, had decided not to seek his own second term.

The Republican convention, which provided a portfolio of memorable (or at least memeable) images, was borne on a typhoon of words. But politics doesn’t speak only the language of policy and platitude. AgainWhen the MAGA movement was born during the 2016 campaign, it was possible to wonder about the specific meaning of the last word. When had America been great, or not been great or stopped being great? On the last night, the original formula was tweaked to “Make America Great Once Again,” which doesn’t yield an easily pronounceable acronym (MAGOA?)

The Civil War was over, and Black men were legally allowed to vote and helped Republicans win in 1870. Two years later, Louisiana Democrats were determined to take back the state by preventing Black men from voting through intimidation and voter suppression. On Easter Sunday morning, White supremacists stormed the building and went on a killing spree, brutally murdering some 150 Black men. Another disputed election, more political violenceAs for the gubernatorial election dispute in 1872, it happened again in 1876. Americans received a sobering reminder on Saturday of the threat that political violence poses to our democracy. There is much we don’t know yet about the gunman and the shooting, which is being investigated as an attempted assassination. Violence is antithetical to democracy. Ballots, not bullets, should always be the means by which Americans work through their differences. Saturday’s attack should not be taken as a provocation or a justification.

Opinion | Trump’s Lust for Expulsion Has Deep Roots
  + stars: | 2024-07-09 | by ( Jamelle Bouie | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Last week, millions of Americans celebrated our nation’s founding and with it our history of political and social inclusion. It is this history, of newcomers adding to the tapestry of the American experience, that is the foundation of our creedal nationalism, of the contested belief that “Americans are united by principles despite their ethnic, cultural and religious plurality.”I was at an Independence Day celebration of this belief at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s mountaintop home and plantation in Virginia, where dozens of new American citizens were welcomed into the national community with a festive naturalization ceremony, opened — as you might imagine — with a solemn reading of the preamble to the Declaration of Independence. Less central to our collective cultural memory than our history of inclusion — but no less central to American history as it actually unfolded — is a politics of expulsion, of the removal of people, groups and even ideas deemed incompatible with the national spirit, narrowly defined. “The suspicion of outsiders and quick resort to expulsion,” the historian Steven Hahn observes in “Illiberal America: A History,” is one of the defining features of the illiberal current in the American political tradition. If illiberalism — in stark contrast to the universalist claims of liberalism — ties rights and belonging to membership in specific communities of race, ethnicity, religion and gender; if it is “marked by social and cultural exclusions” and sees “violence as a legitimate and potentially necessary means” of wielding power, then it is only natural that illiberal movements or societies would wield expulsion as one method to discipline dissidents and outsiders.

President Biden has repeatedly and rightfully described the stakes in this November’s presidential election as nothing less than the future of American democracy. Mr. Biden has said that he is the candidate with the best chance of taking on this threat of tyranny and defeating it. His argument rests largely on the fact that he beat Mr. Trump in 2020. That is no longer a sufficient rationale for why Mr. Biden should be the Democratic nominee this year. Voters, however, cannot be expected to ignore what was instead plain to see: Mr. Biden is not the man he was four years ago.

CNN —CNN Opinion asked political contributors to weigh in on the first presidential debate of the 2024 race. On the other hand, President Joe Biden did not meet expectations and may have increased concerns about his age and ability to lead for another four years. I talked to Samuel Freedman, a Columbia Journalism School professor, about his recent book about Humphrey and the 1948 Democratic convention in Philadelphia. The book’s title, “Into the Bright Sunshine,” is taken from a line in Humphrey’s rousing speech on civil rights. In 1968, the Democratic Party was operating under old rules in which primary voters actually had relatively little direct effect on delegates. When Strom Thurmond and the Dixiecrats bolted from the Democratic Party in 1948, that’s the beginning of the vast majority of the White South becoming Republicans, stepping away from the Democratic Party. Show me a major Republican politician in the MAGA movement who is a fervent supporter of civil rights legislation.

The article also cited an organization that is preemptively hiring a new auditor in case Trump were to direct the Internal Revenue Service to target the group during a second term. Trump is telling anyone who will listen what his dark goals are for a second term — from mass deportations to the construction of expansive detention camps for migrants to expanding his presidential power. Even the strategy detailed in Sunday’s New York Times article, which included using the courts to slow down a second-term Trump agenda, is far less likely to be successful this time. One reason for this is that in his first term, Trump was able to confirm more than 200 federal judges including three US Supreme Court justices that he personally appointed. That is why second-term resistance strategies only divert resources from the more pressing imperative at hand: keeping Trump from winning a second term.

The Hunter Biden and Trump cases are vastly different, as is the way the former and current first families have responded to the trials. This is especially significant since Hunter Biden could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted, although a sentence for a first-time offender is unlikely to be that severe. The Hunter Biden trial is the latest cruel twist in the story of a family that has endured more tragedies than most could bear. The infringements on the Biden family’s dignity and privacy cut deep during the trial, which saw discomforting testimony about Hunter Biden’s former cocaine addiction. Media organizations, meanwhile, played an excerpt from Hunter Biden’s audio book that chronicles his spiral into addiction that was used in the prosecution case.

The 34-count guilty verdict reached Thursday by a Manhattan jury – the first criminal conviction of a former president – landed like a bomb on the American political landscape.
