The Fed on Tuesday released its Economic Well-Being of US Households report for 2023, examining the financial lives of US adults and their families. Inflation made the financial lives “worse” for 65% of US households, according to the report. Three-plus years of high inflation have taken their toll on Americans’ wallets and their psyches. That was especially true in 2022, when US inflation hit 9.1%, its highest annual rate in more than 40 years. Incomes grew healthily in 2023, but so did spending, the Fed report showed.

☆ BHP Anglo American bid: The clean energy race could trigger the biggest mining deal in decades

London CNN —Mining giant BHP has made a near-$40 billion bid to take over its UK rival Anglo American in what would be the largest mining deal on record. BHP said in a statement Thursday that it valued Anglo American shares at £25.08 ($31.40) apiece, or £31.1 billion ($38.9 billion) in total. The potential deal would have a higher value than the $38.3 billion acquisition of Switzerland’s Xstrata by commodities company Glencore in 2012, according to Dealogic data. It would also be the biggest merger or acquisition in the mining industry by value since Dealogic began collecting the data in 2004. Shares in Anglo American soared as much as 13.8% on the news.

“The recent news from Boeing regarding further aircraft delivery delays presents significant challenges for both 2024 and 2025,” said Southwest CEO Bob Jordan in the company’s first-quarter financial results statement. That incident prompted a three-week grounding of the Max 9, and will delay the certification of two new models of the plane, the 737 Max 7 and 737 Max 10, until at least next year. The cutbacks are the latest sign of the widening impact of the ongoing problems at Boeing throughout the air travel system. It announced Thursday that it has trimmed its order book to 19 of those jets, shifting to 737 Max 8 jets instead. Unlike all-Boeing Southwest, American’s fleet of mainline aircraft is split fairly evenly between those from Boeing and those from its rival Airbus.

New York CNN —Columbia University student organizers were given a midnight deadline Tuesday to resolve talks with the university over dismantling the pro-Palestinian encampment that has cast its campus into days of turmoil and unease, the school’s president said. Though the outcome of the negotiations is still unclear, Columbia President Minouche Shafik said the university would consider “alternative options” if no agreement was reached by midnight. As of 12:10 a.m., the NYPD had not been asked by Columbia University to respond to the campus, a police spokesperson told CNN. Harvard University has closed Harvard Yard and officials at the university suspended a pro-Palestinian student organization for allegedly violating school policies. The encampment at Columbia University was lively early this week, with many students congregating in circles, eating and talking.

It also converted previous orders for 30 of the shorter Max 8 version of the plane, which is currently flying, into additional Max 10 orders. That report showed no other orders for any version of the 737 Max. Besides American’s large Max order, Boeing also received orders for 28 of its widebody 777 jets during the month. Boeing also reported it delivered only 24 of the 737 Max jets in the month, and five 787 Dreamliners.

That’s as much as a 33% increase from what it previously cost on American Airlines: $30 for both methods. Pilots at American Airlines approved a contract on Monday that will increase pilot compensation by more than 46 percent and includes other benefits and changes. Under the contract, the pay of pilots at the company immediately increased by an average of 21 percent upon ratification. By August 2027, total compensation will have increased by more than 46 percent, including pay raises and increased retirement contributions by the airline. Across the industry, pilots have negotiated big raises and other gains, including greater protection against last-minute schedule changes. At the top end of the profession, pilots who fly long international flights typically earn several hundred thousand dollars a year.

New York CNN —American Airlines (AAL) agreed to raise its pilot contract offer by more than a billion dollars to bring it on par with the tentative agreement competitor United Airlines reached with its pilots last week. The total offer reaches about $9 billion dollars in incremental compensation and benefits, CEO Robert Isom said in a call with pilots Friday. Isom said the United agreement “changed the landscape” and had wages that were higher than Delta’s original negotiations. Last week, United Airlines pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, reached a deal in principle with the airline, giving the pilots up to a 40% raise. Last week, APA President Ed Sicher said in a statement it is “dead obvious” their union’s existing tentative agreement is “woefully deficient by comparison” to the tentative agreement reached by its competitor airline’s pilots.
